having work to do and not doing it makes me physically uncomfortable

like i am slacking a bit today because i've been going at it pretty hard the last few days and i'm actually not enjoying it haha

we have a big end of year push going on and i've already saved the company as much money as shutting down entire other branches would and i'm still like

i can do more i haven't finished my task yet

    me too

it's just that the alternative is even worse

Tentative Top Ten in maybe a vague order that could probably move around a bit and also isn't 10 games:
    FF7 Remake
    Half Life Alyx
    Hades
    Destiny 2: Beyond Light
    Bugsnax (so far)
    Astro's Playroom
    Last of Us pt. 2
    Fall Guys

Stuff that maybe makes the list because shit, I dunno, what else came out this year?
    Animal Crossing
    Star Wars: Squadrons (?)

Haven't played yet but might make the list:
    Demon's Souls
    Miles Morales
    Cyberpunk
    AC: Valhalla
    Ghosts of Tsushima

I also played a lot of FFXIV this year. But that's not really eligible.

Its a pity Facebook is ruining the Oculus with their garbage.

It significantly informed my decision to return my Quest 2.

can you feel the struggle within?

The more I played Squadrons, the more of a disappointment it became. Which is sad to me.

the only game I played this year that immediately comes to mind as a good time I'd recommend to others is a short hike

(it came as part of that amazing itch.io bundle)

you're a bird and you hike up a mountain, fly around, maybe you pick up some shells or fish a bit or run a race with other people you meet as you hike

    really nice couple of hours

I played like one good night of multiplayer and had fun and then realized I had no desire to go back to it. But it was fun! I just have other stuff I'd rather be playing instead. And the story missions were fine, but not really all that interesting.

I think them saying they had no plans to add more content kind of killed a lot of the drive for me. Being in an X-Wing in VR is real fuckin' cool though.

Have you been promoted twice or just once chanus

depending how you look at it

i was hired from being a temp after two months (which is the fastest that's ever happened apparently)

promoted basically at the same time as my role changed from order tracking to handling a small branch

given the largest branch in the company to handle a few months later

promoted to a senior position within my level a couple months after that

    that was year one

    Allegedly a voice of reason.

Indeed. Being in an X-Wing in VR has been my #1 hoped for experience in gaming for 30 years.

Maybe this will be a stepping stone to something better.

my greatest skill is probably my ability to just knuckle down and get my work done first so it's out of the way and i never have to rush to finish things

but it also reveals just how much of my work day is unnecessary

i don't really mind having to be available 40 hours a week, just it's entirely unnecessary to be confined to a desk all of those hours most weeks

have you considered doing nothing until there's definitely just about not enough time to get your shit done then rushing through and just about getting things done while your heart beats out of your chest and swearing never to do this again until tomorrow

the problem is I'm divorced from any products of my labor and I sit alone in a cube, now an 80ft2 home office

I find that I am very fast about doing work if other people depend on it. Like if someone says I need this dataset as an input into my visualization, I will do the data engineering to make that happen as fast as possible and run my code in the evening for same day turnaround, etc.
If there isn’t a clear purpose or if there’s just a vague deadline, I just don’t do much of anything.

I have two programming tasks that aren't due until the end of December. They will take a combined 1 day of programming. I keep waiting to start them because "I have plenty of time"

I literally cannot understand this. Every company I've ever worked for, including my current one, either downsizes personnel and/or loads on more work until every individual has far more work to do than can be reasonably done in a 40 hour work week.

There have been short periods of time, a few weeks or months here and there, when I've felt like there's been slack in my workload, but that's rare and transitory.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

I currently have a supervisor who doesn't really supervise my work, no one assigning me work directly, and no job description. I wrote my own objectives for my performance assessment, and will provide numbers for that assessment, which will not be verified. I have to look for and establish my own work at all times, unless someone asks me to do something directly, to which I usually accede because it's easier than looking for tasks

This is an acting position that was established around the time covid disrupted all operations, but still. It's the kind of staffing black hole every org wants to avoid, desperately.

I hate it. I hate it a lot. It's extremely demotivating and the opposite of what I want. Thankfully it will end in February.

yea the highlighted all would be likely to make a game of the year list for me once I get to them.

    Along with Yakuza 7.

The back part of this year is DENSE with absolute bangers.

I stand by this being one of the best overall years in gaming(quite likely number one) due to that dense chunk along with good releases spread throughout the rest of the year.
