I'd be really into a medieval or otherwise old timey Stardew-like
There's already something very antiquated and archaic about these games, especially with the way that the fantasy elements tend to creep in, why not just go all in on that?
Edit: Also please give me a cooking system more robust than x+y=cake, make a game where meals are the most valuable things in the game but you have to actually work to make them correctly
Kynseed is still in early access but is looking interesting

Regarding Yakuza, I feel like I would strongly recommend against planning to play all of them or going in an order that doesn't start with the game you think looks best/the best starting point.
They are very, very large games and while there's a lot of stuff that you can ignore to mainline the story, that stuff has a lot of the core heart of the games. Trying to play all the games at once feels like a recipe to either burn out or mainline story content and miss the joy of Sidequest Kiryu.

I burn through 3, 4, and 5 in rapid succession right when quarantine hit, when still adjusting to lockdown life. That was... A little much.

Loop Hero sits at an intersection between traditional roguelike, autobattler, deckbuilder, and match-3 puzzle game. It takes direct control of its hero away, but still expertly strums the pleasure center of my brain with every looted corpse. It's also friendlier than other roguelikes, such as Spelunky 2 with its ruthless platforming, and doesn't frustrate. The year is still young, but it’s my favorite game to release so far in 2021.
no set release date, but apparently coming 'very soon'

Honestly kinda surprised it's getting a sequel, most reviews are pretty middling, but then I guess it was a Souls-like before there were eleventyfuck of those so it probably had decent sales.

They've since made The Surge and The Surge 2, and those were reasonably well received, so I guess they wanna go back and take another crack at Lords of the Fallen.

The Surge 2 is my favorite non-From soulslike so if they have that level of quality increase from Lords of the Fallen 1 to 2 then i'll be happy.
Similarly if they do the same thing as Surge 1->2 and get rid of the boring set protagonist.
I just finished Surge 2, and recommend it as a relatively easy Soulslike.
It took me 27h total, only had real trouble on one boss (The Delver). I liked how it gave me stats at the end of the game, which showed me as extremely average. (It gives you time spent and deaths on each level and boss)
I like the directional parry with the large windows, and the Hits->Battery->Heal which allows for hittrading, especially at endgame where I had heavy armor + fast weapons (The best claws I found).
I also.... may have... accidently killed the protagonist from Surge 1
There is a long quest chain where he helps and you need to keep bringing him stuff, and I did it all. Then right at the end he fixes the train, and wants you to get on it. I thought this was continuing the mission to the final boss, so I got the train.
Roll credits, no reward from quest, after credits it reloads me and he's despawned. Presumably he went to fight the final boss and lost....
It's on Gamepass, so all you're risking is downloading gigabytes
I wish I enjoyed The Surge 2 as much as everyone else (even my friends loved it), I just really do not like how the game feels. The way you move, the way you dodge, the way attacks move you, everything feels loosey goosey in a bad way. I did like their direction parry system though, it felt like a much better way of teaching the player to use parries than Souls' "just die until you get it".
Oddly enough, at the time, I enjoyed Lords of the Fallen enough to play through it twice, once normally and once by taking no hits on bosses (to get their special weapons). Not sure I'd want to go back to the game now that I've played a dozen other such titles since, including other From games, I've little doubt my "I just want more Souls!" mindset at the time was willing to forgive plenty.
So I did a bit of a DS1 run a few years back and got as far as blight town before bouncing off it.
If I wanted to play a souls-ish action RPG, with a focus on making cool builds, but a minimum of obtuseness and depression, what should I pick?
Code Vein if you don't mind the anime vampires. Builds are literally which Code you equip, and you can change that at will, plus you can learn abilities from each Code that can be carried over to others. Makes it fun to get a new Code and seeing what new toys it has for you to learn.

My most distinct memory of Code Vein while watching my best friend play it
There was a companion that seemed super OP, like she was destroying shit left and right
And he’s in the middle of a boss fight
I say “hey, I wonder if she could solo the boss”
He said “let’s see”
And turned out that yes, she could solo the boss. If anything, he was holding her back.

Omori status update: It's very good so far! Interesting enough battle system (Stat buffs/debunks are emotions that rock paper scissors each other), fun characterization, a good mix of creepy and cute, and the colored pencil art style is gorgeous. Can't say much more without feeling like it's either a spoiler or basically a spoiler for giving away the vibe.

Lords of the Fallen 2 isn't being made by the same dev as The Surge. It's being developed by CI Games who co-developed LotF1. So who the heck knows how this is going to turn out.

Honestly, each room has a mandatory period where I just fling Celeste into the abyss to see what's fatal. Then a "how do I get to there?" period
Fucking hard on the hands though. You've really got to plan out your button presses in sequence. The amount of times I've airdashed myself into death is......well it's a lot.

wish there was lucasarts stuff in here, but I guess they don't really want to remember any of the non star wars stuff

damn what a reveal!
That's two obligations that I'm not prepared to take on.
Especially the latter.

This is sad cause there's certainly been an improvement in everything else but the story is just barely there. It aint cool at all.

In all seriousness, this game somehow manages to be really hard yet incredibly supportive at the same time and that's very nice to see.
Because I've died almost 600 times by now and I've collected like....9 strawberries?

It is probably one of the most supportive and heartwarming game designed to crush your hand into paste ever made.
