I met her once when I was 6, before the war, when she was still working on a Yugoslavian TV show with a family friend. Once the war started, she was basically forced to move to the US because she was in a relationship with a Serb so our Croatian nationalists decided that she was also one of "the enemy" and started harassing her and threatening her life.
If you manage to find some interviews with her in English, she often spoke of her life and how much of it directly influenced Delenn's story on B5.
my new tv thing is getting super into tv movies/mini-series based on horror novels you'd buy in an airport book store. lotta king and koontz in my immediate future.
i am watching rose red and i think they wholesale recycled the cgi bee effects from the shining miniseries. i can't be sure though.
also man this is the character actor dream team: nancy travis, jimmi simpson, matt keeslar, kevin tighe, and the warlock, himself, julian sands? hunting ghosts?? in seattle?!?
what a treat!!

I like Rose Red a lot. It's not, uh, classically good, but it's fun.
Alone is great, for some reason I found it very soothing during the Covid Darkest Times.
Also it's fun being all sneery at the super macho guys who turn up being "I'm gonna WIN this thing I'm such a WINNER!" and then go home after five days because they can't take not having anyone around to tell them they're awesome all the time.
I dig what they're doing, like, on paper. "Every episode is a different era of sitcom history" SHOULD be my shit. But if you're gonna do a Dick van Dyke Show episode, it should... Be as good as those were? And/or have a game that sets it apart, that dismantles the format?
The second episode is a little better, but the first episode didn't do a thing for me and the changes between episodes weren't enough to get my buy-in.
It feels like the show's putting a LOT of emphasis on, "Isn't it CRAZY that these two characters you know and love are in this scenario?!" But even in a franchise with a lot of thin characters, Wanda and Vision are especially bland.
"Isn't it WILD how we put oatmeal AND raisins... In a cookie?!??!?!" Yeah, man, real revolutionary, my mind's blown over here

The third episode is much better than the first two, but yes, its core problem is that it wants to be a love letter to these old sitcoms, in a way, but it's not funny.

I will say that episode 3 is a bit better than the first two which I likewise found to be kind of a chore
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.

Personally I have found the elements of WandaVision that are just sitcom episodes funny and fun, but obviously that's subjective
I'm also a mark for the show because Wanda Maximoff is one of my favorite Marvel Comics characters, even if she's been a bit nothing in the movies so far

I may actually have fucked myself by watching so much of the Decades channel
I watch enough of the shows WandaVision is aping that all I can see are the spots where it falls short in comparison. My radar for what's effective homage may be miscalibrated, I dunno.

Trying to compare another show to the Dick Van Dyke show may be just a little unfair, that show was so sharp, and DVD and MTM were so good in it.
Agreed!
Which has me asking, like... Why did they try? Why did they invite a comparison they were doomed to fail to live up to?
(Even more so than usual, I'm not trying to talk anybody else out of liking the show - it just does not work for me AT ALL when I am in a lot of ways the perfect mark for its angle, and I think that's interesting)

Yeah I've watched like, a smattering of such things over the years, but none of it terribly recently (and I have swiss cheese brain anyways)
I wouldn't say that WandaVision is better than a Dick Van Dyke Show or a Bewitched or whatever but it has hit the mark closely enough for me so far
I do think if the show weren't trying to do Other Things and was just going to be a straight through sitcom, it would potentially fall short, which may also be related to my knowledge of the comics story lines it seems to be drawing from, as I have at least some idea of what those Other Things are

I know fuck all about comics and way too much about old sitcoms, which is maybe part of the problem. Especially in the pilot, there were so few indicators of what the Other Things might be that all I had to reckon with was this pale imitation of shows I like
I kept waiting for a Big Turn that never came

to me, they were telling me to laugh because it's mcu characters in a sitcom homage, instead of making me laugh by writing funny jokes

If you want to know, some spoilers for the comics that Wandavision is based on
Wanda Maximoff is an extremely powerful reality warping mutant* whose powers largely just manifest as loosely defined magic (which she also gets some training in later on). In the comics, when she is unable to conceive a child with her robo-husband, she creates babies with her magic.
Due to some comics bullshit, these babies have a bit of a tenuous existence, and for a while are erased from reality and wiped from her mind by her friend and mentor. When she recovers her memories, she turns into a villain for a time, blaming the Avengers for killing her children. Increasingly unstable, she ends up creating an entire reality where she has her children back and her family is the ruling class of the entire world. This is a big comics wide event that results in her depowering 99% of the mutant population of Earth.
Following this reality is returned to normal and her kids pop up in a like, reincarnated form that isn't directly tied to her (but is definitely tied to her still), and she continues to oscillate around as an ambiguous hero who everyone treats with kid gloves because she might destroy the world again.
*Yes okay maybe not anymore, but for the purposes of her history, she was.
I’m not overly fond of the older sitcoms so I ended up turning it off about 10 minutes in. Granted I’m not a fan of Vision or Wanda so that makes me less inclined to watch more. It could possibly be because I grew up watching those shows due to my parents liking them and only having one tv situation.

I don’t even want to put it in spoilers, I just want you all to watch it
That I had to rewind and watch again.
It really is a solid show for something that's still edutainment.
gd. always knew it was going to hurt becoming the older generation.

Which seems to be another magic teens in school show but these teens are fairies I think?
I've watched it but I can't think of anything especially noteworthy?
It's apparently a dark and sexy continuation of an animated show called Winx Club that I'm not overly familiar with but yeah it's all about fairies
Yeah. Wasn’t Winx Club an animated kids show?
I am definitely considering watching this new one, it seems like a level of dumb shit I can be on the level with.
It’s pretty good so far!
On a scale of 1 to The Magicians, how horny is it?
Coran Attack!
Probably a 3 so far. It’s not that horny at all.
Omar Sy rolls natural 20s on Charisma checks at will.

Oh I don’t even know if I saw that but now I’m curious. No I’m talking about
I like Rose Red a lot. It's not, uh, classically good, but it's fun.
it's high art
Also it's fun being all sneery at the super macho guys who turn up being "I'm gonna WIN this thing I'm such a WINNER!" and then go home after five days because they can't take not having anyone around to tell them they're awesome all the time.
But I also possess none of the survival skills necessary for that kind of adventure.
I don't think I shall watch more.
