So much of my last 20 years have been defined by them. Memories of listening to Alive 07 non stop. Travelling 2 hours to see Tron: Legacy in IMAX 3D. Watching all of Interstella 5555. Always letting motherfucking Starboy playing through. "Stronger" being literally the only song of Kanye West's that I will seek out to listen to.

I wish them the best in their future endeavors. But if they decide to just completely stop? They'll have earned it.

BTW, their last release was a complete edition for the Tron Legacy soundtrack for the 10th anniversary. The 10 "new" tracks aren't bangers, but they are still pretty awesome.

Can't say I won't miss wondering what their next thing will be, but for as long as I've been alive we've had awesome work out of them, they've earned their rest.

Thanks French Robots for giving me so many tunes to groove to.

This flash animation was my first exposure to Daft Punk. At the time, I didn’t even know they were a band... I just thought this was a song made for this video.

But man... they were just consistently good for a long time.

I think Daft Hands is among one of my first memories of a Youtube Viral Video.

Daft Punk also appeared in DJ Hero, which was the highlight of the game for me.

Funny enough, they also did a lot of co-production on Yeezus's first three tracks

Anyways this news doesn't terribly surprise me, RAM was eight years ago now and I think my own world had hit peak Daft Punk even a few years prior to that

I think a lot about how one of the stated goals of Random Access Memories as a concept album of sorts was to rejuvenate funk and disco in pop music and, based on the ouvres of artists like Bruno Mars and many others, I think their aim proved true in the span of time since

They’re leaving such a great library of jams that it’s hard to even really be upset about this.

They did it. What more did they even have left to do?

Ironically I absolutely despise Stronger for ruining the greatness that is Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.

Sad to see them go but all things must end and at least it was an amicable split. I saw Tron Legacy entirely because they did the soundtrack and they were the only good part about that movie. Derezzed still gets me pumping to this day.

I do actually enjoy Tron: Legacy on its own merits but, I will say, Disney did an excellent job on reading the room in that moment and being like "yeah these guys will punch this movie the hell up in exactly the right way"

You wound me on so many levels! :D But I won't go into my screed defending Tron: Legacy, as I know it was very clunky and divisive.

yeah tron legacy is like the perfect movie for not engaging with the narrative, instead you can just focus on the spectacle

it looked AMAZING in 3D with the soundtrack pumping, it was one of my favorite theatre experiences

still go back to that soundtrack often when I need to do coding

I remember when the first time I listened to Daft punk. Its very funny.

For you see, for my 11th birthday I dearly wished for a cd album of a band I had watched a lot on a music channel. It was catchy and it was in my mind, so I told my mom and on my birthday I eagerly opened the cd I wished for. And it was NOT The gift of the game by Crazy Town nor P.O.D. single I thought I asked for. Instead I got this wierd album called "Discovery"? and there was no pictures of who made them or anything.

A bit dejected I put the cd into my stereo and got lost in the music. Of course I skipped ahead on the stranger tracks for me like "Aerodynamic", "Something about us" and especially "Too long". But I really got into the more easier to listen to songs like "One more time", "Digital Love" and "Voyager". As I tend to get focused on only playing those songs a bunch that day and for the next two weeks, I think my family was annoyed at times, but happy in the end. I even brought the music to school to listen mainly to "One more time" and "Digital love".

Even the years following getting the album, I listened to the album more and got a more taste of their other songs. And even listening to their other tracks on early youtube. Even if I didn't like the song outright I liked how they sounded and played around with the music. Since then (it's been over 19 years) they've always been in some way or shape on whatever thing I listened to music on. Hell I still have some of their tracks from Random Access Memories on my phone right now.

For me, they are artists that it didn't matter what they style they played, I was always interested in what they've made, how it was made and just enjoying their output. I hope everyone has a couple of artists/directors/actors they also follow in the same way. I'm not even sad it's over. Just happy that I've listened to their songs.

I very literally met someone I ended up dating while at PAX East because I put on Alive 2007 during an Enforcer thing and they'd never heard it and started asking around to find out who had put it on. We ended up breaking up because I was moving away from the area, but we remain friends to this day.

So thank you Daft Punk :D

Alive 2007 is their best album and it's not even close, by the by.

My fondest Daft Punk memory was after getting the Discovery album (thanks to that Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger animation on Newgrounds and the first 4 music videos of Interstealla 5555 showing on Cartoon Network) my Mom took me on a trip to NYC she had organized. I brought my Discman and only had a couple CDs so I ended up staring out the window that evening as we started our return trip, listening to the full album on the bus while rolling through the city on a winter night and just vibing out.

I wouldn't find out until later that the music videos were part of a larger animated movie that didn't just end on a cliffhanger as the Crescendolls arrived on Earth and were transformed into a human band.

Who's still got their Daft Club card? I keep mine in the DVD case for Interstella 5555.

edit: the card is extra retro now, since real credit cards don't have the embossed numbers on them anymore.

Back in art school I had a fucking Discman with three burned CDs.

One of them was Daft Punk's Discovery.

The other two were Dangerdoom and the Kill Bill soundtrack because this was like 2005. That album got me through YEARS of animation classes and commuting around Chicago.

Like many, my first exposure was Interstella 5555/Discovery on Toonami and I've been a fan since. Saw this news pretty much first thing this morning and have been low level bummed all day, I was still hoping they would do a random live tour some day since they said they wanted to give RAM time to breathe before they did so. I was just listening to Discovery while button mashing my way through CPU matches in the GG Strive beta and that album is still great. Alive 2007 is definitely the all-timer though. I bought a ridiculous vinyl version despite the fact that I to this day have not gotten around to buying a record player.

Well, they might want more money again sometime
