[Returnal] Aliens meets Groundhog Day
Posts
Proficiency goes up with kills right? According to Helios, I've killed 2155 monsters over 65 deaths, an average of 33 kills per run. I pick up those blue capsules when I find them but they don't seem to add much if any to the XP bar.
I feel like I'm missing an important plot point here.
The auto aim in this game is EXTREMELY generous. If you are even looking in the direction of an enemy, you're probably hitting them.
I stopped dying in the first area when I realized that aiming doesn't matter, this game is about raw speed. Never, ever stop moving, use hit and run tactics, aiming is for suckers.
Also, abuse the shit out of the invincibility frames on your dodge
Adrenaline is extremely powerful. That buff you get when you don't get hit. At max adrenaline, 50% more money drops every time an enemy dies. If you aren't max adrenaline most of the time or you aren't picking that money up before it disappears, you're missing out on a lot of power.
You should be able to almost entirely buy out the shop before going into the first boss.
Opening chests is almost useless at level zero, so just don't do it. Wait until you're higher level to open chests, level 0 weapons won't help you much anyways.
I feel like you're missing a major mechanic of how to play the game if you've died that much in the first area. I don't really know how to help, sorry to say. Focus on not getting hit and being constantly on the move, that's the core of the game.
Explore every room in the first zone, pick up every item, don't get malignancies past two or you'll start breaking your artifacts. It takes me about an hour to clear the first zone if I'm doing everything
Edit: Another point in favor of not getting hit: all those green healing items on the ground? They all turn into MAX HEALTH items if you're already at max health when you grab them!
I'm asking about what the controls are, since I have hand issues to consider.
A rundown on the controls would be aces actually, if anyone could spare the time. What all the buttons do. Would really help me decide if I can get it right now.
Oh yeah, for sure, here you go! In spoilers because some of this is unlockable:
Left trigger has two functions: pressing halfway down is aim down sights, and then a full press activates alternate fire for the weapon. Alternate fire is like the weapons "ultimate" ability and is on a long cooldown.
Right trigger is fire the weapon.
Circle is dodge, you'll use this a lot. X is jump. Square is melee attack, and triangle is grappling hook.
The directional pad is used to switch between consumable items. L1 is for using consumables.
The face pad on the controller opens your map and main menu, L1/R1 switches between sub-menus.
Standard TPS control scheme. Left stick moves and strafes, right stick looks and aims. Face buttons do jump and dash and melee and interact. D-pad controls which consumable slot is active. Left trigger fine-aims with a halfway press, alt-fires when depressed all the way, and there is an adaptive soft block to keep you from accidentally alt-firing (although honestly, you'll be doing most of your firing from the hip while running, thankfully, aim assist is generous and can be set to be more or less generous). Right trigger shoots and times your reload ala Gears of War. L button uses consumables, R button serves as an open slot for those that don't want adaptive triggers. Controls seem customizable and adaptive triggers can be turned off, but I've only touched the default.
Movement is tight and super responsive, like Housemarque's other games. Dash cancels everything, but there's really brief cooldown between dashes. Enemies are aggro as fuck and most like to use bullet hell on you, but some rush you down and slap you hard.
Hope that helps.

First area is basically a set up area. You can always go back to the sheep and sleep which heals you. Which means not only is there no downside to exploring side rooms in area 1 but also all health packs become health increases when you are at full life... so if you go back whenever hurt and sleep you will actually just get way more health increases. And then then sleep again before you leave the first area and then start sprinting through to bosses once you have that set up.
Only downside is I'm already bored of the first area after one afternoon so I can only imagine how much worse that will get lol. I know should have expected that since it is part of the game but I don't usually play roguelites.
Didn't know quite how many rooms would be exactly the same for every single run. Feels a bit weird but I guess that's stuff fans don't usually mind? I feel like even after the very first death each visit to the first area was straight up less interesting than the last.
You're not doing anything wrong per se. Just dying a lot and more frequently than some others it would seem. Take your time more. Also turn on auto sprint. Imo it's one less thing to worry about and makes dodging things easier.
Also see tip in above post!
This game just keeps escalating the coolness of the boss fights. Game of the Year contender for me so far.
Always the temple.
Why doesn't the gateway show the inside of the temple? I get that it's indicating the entire zone, but... Illusion shattered, man. Illusion shattered.
Well then I guess I'll just stop trying to increase it.
Boss 3 downed!
I made the colossal mistake of checking out the citadel's gold star room.
Maybe I'll meet that boss one day >.<
Yeah I also learned that the hard way. That star room is brutal.
Thanks! That lets me know to stay away. I have to put aim on l1 to handle twin stick shooters. Long left trigger presses are way out.
Actually ADS (L2) is rarely used. I'm generally just tapping L1 to bring up your alt fire (long cooldown) and mostly you're holding down R2 to shoot.
I've never been good at moving/shooting at the same time and this game kind of requires that. Even with the generous auto-aim, if I'm concentrating on staying mobile, I still miss about 40% of my shots because I can't keep the reticle on the target when my mind is thinking about moving. I watched a reply of my fight with the first boss, and there are several segments where I'm just not shooting at all - because 100% of my attention is on dodging and movement I "forget" to pull the trigger.
It's really sad because I really am enjoying the short time game loop, but my physical limitations are never going to let me play this game.
You can manually rebind every single button in the game like it was a PC game. There's 2 preset options and then a custom option where you just make the buttons whatever the hell you want it to be. If you wanted aim on triangle for some god forsaken reason you could do that.
Boss 3 down!
(Boss fight begins.)
Fuk.
Resident 8bitdo expert.
Resident hybrid/flap cover expert.
Holy cow fighting him with the shotty sounds painful! I got lucky with a carbine.
The game doesn't give you much of a hint on what you're supposed to do next, but there is additional stuff to do after the credits, it's just not super spelled out.
It had the slug so it wasn't a total wash it just... took a while.
Elsewhere... I know this isn't a thread for movie recommendations, but just to throw out there - hot damn between Returnal and The Mitchells Vs. The Machines, this weekend's entertainment has been top notch.
(Checks watch.) Four hours until Elon Musk fucks it all up.
Sleeping my ps5 isn't an option, someone else uses it as well.
Break every 20-30 mins to move about and rest my hands a bit is a necessity atm. Sleeping my ps5 just for that every half an hour is poop, I'm not even gonna bother. Plus I'm kinda busy and just don't have that much time.
I would need to be able to do a run across several days, basically. This game, as it is, is not that game for me, right now. I'm not the target customer, and that's ok. I don't have to be.
It just looks really cool so I wanna play it at some point.
All the boss battles were fun and embrace quite good mechanics to take them on.
The last biome was super creepy, though most of this game scratched that eldritch cosmic horror for me.
Every successful run I've done (only done two so far) has gone over the 3 hour mark. That's fully exploring everything, though
For me.
k so question for after 3rd boss...
