Kentaro Miura passed away on the 6th of May of acute aortic dissection. He was famous for his long-running, fantasy genre-defining manga, Berserk. Though it was not published continuously during its whole duration, it was always of the utmost quality and has been genre-defining for fantasy. In comics, novels, video games, tabletop roleplaying games, TV and film, Miura's work has been deeply influential since Berserk began publication in 1989.

I am still reeling from this
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
that's not actually the last two published pages of the manga
thank you, fixed

Yeah, there were two or three more chapters since then.
But still.

Yeah, a panel from Berserk could pass as a masterclass woodcutting
The amount of detail and care is utterly mind boggling

Absolutely devastating news
The man was still so young, and had so much left to do, so much left to offer the world
The work he did remains peerless and iconic and quietly, massively influential, and I guess you can't ask for more than that as an artist (or from an artist)
Time assaults me with billowing waves that seem to pierce the clouds
in answer to the drowned-out voices that prowl the roads at night
I will not forget about you
I still stand alone on this bleak and brutal road
With the elegance of a wounded bird, I will endure the rain
I sleep bathed in the blood of an unhealing earth
Oh stars, grandly recount the tale of this night!
I will not forget about you
I simply live on alone in this freezing night
Oh unfading voices, now revive your power!
Hai Yai Forces! Hai Yai Forces!
Hai Yai Forces! Hai Yai Forces!
Hear me, oh soaring tower of shadows, where even the wind does weep,
light your lamps for the wounded one who prowls the roads at night!
I will not forget about you
I still stand alone on this bleak and brutal road
Go forth, oh loquacious shadows! Come and guide me!
Hai Yai Forces! Hai Yai Forces!
Hai Yai Forces! Hai Yai Forces!
Hai Yai Forces! Hai Yai Forces!

That same year, in 1982, Miura enrolled in an artistic curriculum in high school, where he and his classmates started publishing their works in school booklets, as well as having his first dōjinshi published in a fan-produced magazine. Miura at age 18 worked as an assistant to George Morikawa, of Hajime no Ippo fame. Morikawa quickly acknowledged Miura's high artistic level and dismissed him, saying there was nothing he could teach that Miura did not already know.[3] In 1985, Miura applied for the entrance examination of an art college in Nihon University. He submitted his project Futanabi for examination and was granted admission. This project was later nominated for Best New Author in the Weekly Shōnen Magazine. His first serialized work, Noa, was published in the magazine, but it did not work out.[4] In 1988, while working for Buronson in a project titled Orō (王狼, lit. "King of Wolves"),[3] Miura published a prototype of Berserk in Hakusensha's Gekkan ComiComi.[5][6] This 48-page prototype placed 2nd at the 7th ComiComi's Manga-School prize.[7] The serialization of Berserk began in Hakusensha's Monthly Animal House in 1989.[5]
that's the thing, you joke about it never ending because it has a slow release, you don't joke about it never ending because of a tragic freak medical accident

My first exposure to Berserk was the ps2 intro I saw back in early 2004ish.
It helped me with my depression greatly over the years, this hits harder than anything. And I find out about it today on my birthday, almost like a tragic cosmic prank. Rest in peace Kentaro Miura I'll miss you forever.
Absolutely devastating news to wake up to. Rest in peace, sir.
I find it kind of oddly fitting that this should happen after the characters in Berserk actually reach Elfheim, a beautiful and peaceful land where Guts is finally able to fulfill a promise he made to Casca so many, many years ago...
I am incredibly upset by this. Berserk has been a huge influence on me ever since I played Sword of the Berserk on the Dreamcast over 20 years ago. Berserk got me through some very rough times in my early adulthood, and as I've gotten older, seeing all of the other things I enjoy that have been influenced by it has been incredible.
Knowing Miura will never get to finish his life's work is devastating.

Berserk was one of those things I had always expected to not be finished, but not like this. It's terrible that he passed so young, and I hope his assistants can land on their feet.
Berserk is one of those things that I never got around to, but the media I love is so influenced by it that I know I would love it. I had figured because of the inconsistent schedule I’d start reading when the story was done.

This fuckin sucks.
Yeah, the ultimate consequence of this for me is that I'm finally going to pick up Berserk volumes
Maybe it's cruel to wait until a time like this to engage with and enjoy someone's work directly, but, well. I haven't read Game of Thrones yet either, and I'm a lot less likely to start that these days

Without getting into spoilers, I will say that the story does at least have a nice ending point with the current volumes available.
