Been playing since the soft launch in NZ and I don't care about battling as most of it is against people who have clearly just been throwing money into it to get a deck with two 3 star mewtwo exs and two gardevoir.
Have almost obtained 1000 total cards and am missing 21 cards from a complete dex (excluding rares of which I have 17)
supposedly they are adding pve events which will go a long way toward making this an actual game.
I do still have some basic solo challenges left, but gating them by having to beat each deck in order means I'm limited by my weakest types for now.
But something more to do than basic pve training and a uselessly divided "beginner" and "card game pro" pvp queues seems like a big add.
I'm happy with the battle streamlining in general just give me more chance to actually play. I don't want to sit around cracking packs or looking at my "collection." that's just gacha endorphins.
Be sure to check out the rental decks for those that you unlock when you pull its signature card. They're pretty much designed to match up against those challenge decks.
You can also use the points you get from opening packs to craft cards you need to fill out a deck of your own. It's 500 points for a 4 Diamond EX, everything above that is a variant card.
How does the limit on rental decks work? I skipped past the explanation in-game, and it looks like I only get 10 total uses before I can't use them anymore. I got the Blaine and the Pikachu ones, but I want to save them for emergencies.
Another thing I noticed trying to build my own deck is that mixing types is more difficult than I expected. Maybe I just got unlucky, but when I tried three different matches with a mix of two types, I only got a decent mix of energy types in one match. The other two I'd have nothing but electric Pokemon and Fighting energy (or whatever). I'm too used to MTG where 2 colors is the bare minimum, and color fixing lands can get you 3 or even 4 colors in a deck.
Yeah, multi-type decks are *rough* currently because of the random type energy. There are a few pokemon abilities that can generate energy (Gardevoir for the active Pokemon, Magneton for itself, etc), and a few trainer cards as well (Misty is a particularly high risk high reward one, flip coins until you get a tails and then attach water energy equal to the amount of heads you flipped to your active pokemon).
Without specifically planning for generating the energy you need, dual type decks are gonna be less than optimal due to the random nature of the energy generation.
The only dual deck I've seen work is Dragonite, and even then energy starvation can happen easily if the game decides to not give that other energy on time like a mono deck would have
Yeah, Dragonite supported with Eevee/Vaporeon/Jolteon plus a handful of the other Electric/Water cards with light requirements on Energy type seems doable at a glance. Since I've got the Dragonites, I might see about making that deck, seems like fun.

How and where do you do this? I can’t see anything about crafting cards (though maybe I need to be higher level, I’m only about 9/10)

It’s this down here. You earn 5 points per pack you open and costs scale heavily on rarity. I made a couple trainers and they were 70 points each. And EX is 500 (or 100 packs opened).
You know, I think much like mainline pkmn, if this was two on two it’d be much more of a game. Right now it seems like elaborate coin flips to determine if you’ll win or lose. Plus maybe some kind of discard from the bench to make extra energy would be helpful and open up slots for mans.
If they’ve got any sense (and are cruel like all gacha makers), they’ll add alternate basic cards in the future that do more stuff.
If they want multi-type decks to exist they’ll probably want cards that convert energy to different types, and ways to pull energy back off cards…
Whatever's in this game has a counterpart in the physical version, so yeah depending on what's available now those mechanics may very well be input. I'd personally like dual element decks to be a bit more viable but when deck size is only 20 that may not be enough.
Lapras PvE event starts tomorrow, and rewards include packs of promo cards with the headliner of Lapras EX. It's not a guaranteed drop from the packs, but you'll be able to grind infinitely for more after you complete the missions.
One thing I don't understand: in the Shop, it looks like I can buy a set of 6 hourglasses for 12 tickets. But there's also a monthly refresh to buy 6 hourglasses for... 18 tickets? What am I missing here; why would anyone do the latter?

The first set is limited, and presumably won't come back, the second set refreshes every month.

Get those Pikachu EX decks up and running
yes the pikachu EX deck that i definitely have and not the 4 wigglytuff EXes I've gotten in a row from pikachu packs
I have like six electric cards, I'm not making an electric deck anytime soon. And I definitely can't beat the Advanced deck on this event. Honestly, the Intermediate is already touch and go, if I go first I'll probably lose. That Seaking is an absolute problem, 80 damage and 100HP on one energy hurts.

I cleared the event and got two Lapras ex
I've heard whispers that the stamina refresh for event currency (the blue diamonds) are carried over to future events so maybe hold off on blowing them all at the start until we get confirmation
I've been slogging it out with the Expert deck and the real menace is Starmie Ex. That little bastard is too good at sniping when it has chunky health, no retreat cost, and flat 90 damage for two energy on a single evolution. Pikachu EX can't kill it in one shot so it scoots out, brings in a Golduck to hit for 70, Pikachu kills the Golduck, then Starmie comes back in for the finisher
I was able to clear it with a zapdos EX high roll on coinflips. Deck was 2x electrode, 2x zebstrika, 1x Zapdos ex
There is a very real threat of a seaking one shotting your unevolved starter if you go second so I had to reset the third tier like 4 times. The final tier was actually easier because it went like first try “kill a psyduck, sacrifice a backup to starmieEX, then one shot them with the zap.
Notably I don’t think I can win with anything but a zapdos start because electrodes are only going to survive to attack once.
Also I think the surge rental deck should be able to handle the third tier, I’m just not entirely sure how rentals work and the limit of 10 makes me want to hoard them forever. I do know you only spend stamina on a win, but I don’t know if you lose rents on a loss
I've had pretty good luck in the event. Using Sabrina to force in a Lapras EX that has no energy on it is very satisfying, especially if you have out a Zebstrika that can just snipe everything behind it for a few turns.
Finally, after a parade of nothing but Mankeys, I got the Lapras EX card. Still want to try and get all of the promos from the event, but I at least have the main prize.
My electric deck is pretty bad, but luckily I did get Lt Surge, and his rental deck was an easy win.
If I'm redoing fights to get more cards, is there any reason not to just redo the easiest one?
I can confirm that a loss does count against your total uses of rental decks. My Pikachu EX deck got wrecked yesterday by a turn 2 Starmie EX corresponding with me having only basic Pokemon on hand. Managed to win a rematch though. Going to be tough to hit those "win 5+ times" missions without a good non-rental electric deck and limited battle attempts per day. Got a double of the Lapras EX card though, so that's what really matters.
Could someone explain the different types of cards for someone who hasn't played the TCG?
I get that Ex cards are fundamentally different from the normal ones, but there's 4 different Pikachu Exs for example
So the one on the right is the normal one and I've gathered that the next one from the right is called "Full Art"?
But the last two shinies, is one "Holo" and one "Foil"? Which one is which?
Pikachu should come out of the pokeball doing a slide on all fours, then do little hops back and forth like an angry field mouse, only stepping back onto two paws to use thunder.
Yeah I know, I'm just wondering what they're called. The naming schemes
There's alternate art and full art. Full art lose the card borders and use the whole space. Alternate art tend to be more experimental art in the regular card format. They're generally the collector cards because they're the most rare. Pokemon and Supporter cards can have full art and alt art
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
+1

Fuck Seaking
edit: extremely lucky pulling it all four battles immediately.
