Looks like a Wes Anderson flick by way of John Wick and I dig it.

Watched West Side Story (the new one) and it's a very beautifully shot movie where you go, "wow, this is gorgeous" and then Ansel Elgort's weird head pops into frame and does bad acting at you. It's not necessarily the movie's fault that they filmed it before...everything came out about him, but unfortunately you do sit there and watch everyone go, "Tony's great," despite all evidence and you have this guy surrounded by vastly more charismatic actors who don't have any allegations out about them, and it really brings home how little he brings to the table other than "he's tall."

There's a number where Maria tries to convince Anita that she loves Tony and they sell the hell out of it, but the whole time you're like, "yeah, but all of this for him though?" I know that's sort of...how the source material is, though.

Sam Elliot said some shit about Power of the Dog that managed to be condescending, kinda sexist, more than a little homophobic, and also on-its-own stupid.

I would really enjoy it if actors would stop having opinions in public, nothing good comes of it

    One hundred percent agree.
A little annoyed at how good the reviews for The Batman are, because it makes me want to see it but I really don’t want to go to a theater anytime soon.

I don't wanna lead the hyperbole parade

but coming out of it tonight, i'm gonna have a hard time being convinced it isnt the best batman movie so far

    bat soliloquies for everyone

unless you're someone who arbitrarily hates things because of their run time

That's a big ask.../glances at Hulu's "movies less than ninety minutes long" section

that is definitely gonna be a bad movie, but hopefully it's a fun bad movie

one of my favorite fun bad action movies ever is Smokin' Aces and it definitely has a bit of that vibe

The ending of lethal weapon is fucked up, they just straight up sacrifice 2 cops just for a cool misdirect. Also man lethal weapon is so ridiculous. I can’t believe it was so popular, I can’t believe it ends with Mel Gibson crotch choking Gary busey, doing multiple crotch thrusts in the mud. Then the classic bad guy slow mo gun pull shot

It’s been so long since I’ve seen it and the it’s always sunny version seems not as silly now

Reminds me of the tank sequence in fast and the furious 6, which was all a misdirect and so didn’t need to happen on a highway, and like at least 10 civilian cars are run over just to pointlessly misdirect the bad guy

Lethal Weapon is fucking awesome, fucking awesome music, fucking awesome, characters, fucking awesome bromance. Only downside is the random scene to fake Riggs' death which seems like a reshoot to make the following scene happen, there's no reason for Riggs to be out on that street corner, for Joshua to know where he is, for them to really anticipate what happens considering it clearly isn't planned because Murtaugh didn't know about the bulletproof vest.

I tried watching The King's Man last night and I dipped out with 40 minutes left. I couldn't even tell you what was happening.

The only bit that made me go "hey that's cool" was
when they're in no mans land and they meet the German soldiers. They put down their guns and pull out knives and trench clubs because otherwise machine guns will open up on them. That was just a really neat set up for a fight. But then a dude in a gas mask (why? They're is no gas at this moment, why are you crawling around at night in a gas mask, you can't see shit you silly German man. Also I'm pretty sure that was like, a Cold War era Soviet gas mask) locked on a weird glove spike and I kinda went cross-eyed again.

They let Ralph Fienes act for exactly 39 seconds.

I'm watching Come and See before it's obliterated off of YouTube for being a Russian film and it's the most fucked up sensory overload I've experienced from a war film

It's from 1985 and about the Nazi occupation of Belarus I think and it's getting caught up in the zeitgeist it already fell out of a 250 due to fan votes and the internet isn't free so I'd peep it just in case

I understand if people draw a hard line against musicals. I don't respect it much, but I understand

But if you give a shit about musicals even a little, or are even just a tiny bit musicals-curious and enjoy the craft of the movies, you owe it to yourself to see this one

It's probably the best thing Spielberg has done since Saving Private Ryan, depending on how you feel about AI and Minority Report, and the Leonard Bernstein of it all is as great today as it was 60 years ago

Ansel Elgort is a potatoface but Spielberg shoots him real pretty, and Romeo is always the least interesting part of that story. The rest of the cast is home runs across the board, and Rita Moreno made me cry

Elgort is one of those few actors who just have an anti-chemistry for me.* I've still got a hold on West Side Story at the library, but it turns out it's kind of a popular movie with library goers.

*Tobey Maguire and Jesse Eisenberg being the main other two; I've missed out on a number of apparently-very-good-movies because of not wanting to watch the latter.

When I try to think of what Elgort looks like, I can only think of the Mighty Boosh where Vince paints Howard's face and it is a big pink ball and everyone agrees that it is extremely accurate.

I think Ansel Elgort is... serviceable in the film? He's better in the back half than the beginning but even then, he's just doing a satisfactory job.

Which is really highlighted by the fact that literally every other actor in the film is overshadowing him with dazzling performances.

He ends up looking like a high school junior trying to compete alongside Broadway veterans.

    I watched The Batman.

Overall it was ALMOST perfect represenation of what a story about this character SHOULD look like. Unfortunately, I have one huge problem with it that does not allow me to be perfectly happy.
It is yet another story where antagonist has some real grievances, but to not make audience too uncomfortable he turns into a psychopath that wants to kill innocent people for shit and giggles, so they are not conflicted about wanting to see him stopped. I expected something more than that, especially from the movie that tries to talk about Bruce's life in privilege.

Corrupt officials are targeted and punished, but the one hunting them down is ACTUALLY the real big bad here, you guys! Do not think too hard about non-super villain people destroying lives of regular people every day!

Other than that, I was impressed with the amosphere, characters, music and actors. As I said, it is ALMOST ideal Batman movie - shame about that ALMOST.

The Batman is so determined to avoid having yet another flashback to Thomas and Martha Wayne getting shot that it doesn't have any flashbacks at all, even in instances where there probably should have been (there are one or two).
