The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
The Nintendo DS Browser is a version of the Opera web browser for use on the Nintendo DS, developed by Opera Software and Nintendo. The Nintendo DS Browser comes in a version for both the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo DS Lite; this is due to the physical size differences in the memory expansion cartridges used by the browser, which has a capacity of 10 MB.
Supposedly only the Lite version will be available in stores whereas the Phat version will have to be ordered direct from Nintendo a'la Electroplankton.
I totally forgot about this. I was planning on purchasing Super Mario 64 DS tomorrow but I may save my dollars towards this on Tuesday. Hopefully it's better than PSP browser which is garbage.
I mentioned this in another thread discussing all the cool stuff coming out in June from Nintendo, but people misunderstood and thought I was talking about the Wii browser.
Now, if only they would bring over the mp3 player.
If I have access to the internet, odds are I have access to a computer, which would be more convenient than a small screen with no keyboard.
Let's say I'm waiting for a friend of mine to meet me somewhere. That place where I am waiting happens to have free wi-fi. I can browse the web without the need of lugging around a laptop nor the need to purchase one.
For being out on the town without a PDA also. Just find a wi-fi hotspot for quick access to information.
You'd be surprised just how much we (My group of friends) need internet access while going out in the weekends.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think all that many places just happen to have free wifi.

Lets also say you have a 56k, so you now can visit such fine places like YouTube(hopefully) and gametrailers.

You'd be surprised. Most of the McDonald's in the area have it. My workplace has it, so if I want to browse the web on my lunch break.

That explanation actually makes sense.
Assuming, of course, that you can play videos on it.

It also depends on the region, but you might be pleasantly surprised if you look around.
Here, even Dunkin Donuts has open Wi-Fi.

I got this over in British-land. It's pretty nice - respectably fast with a good connection, and connects easily to open and WEP networks. Just a warning - Flash doesn't work on it. An EB employee told me that they're planning on releasing an upgrade to allow flash compatibility, so we'll see. Most other things work nicely tho - Gmail, Google maps, these forums - it's pretty handy.

Damn, no flash means no Youtube. Even less reason to get this now.

Lots of places have free wifi. They just don't mean to. Which raises the question: Does wardriving work with a DS? Granted even if I was going to steal wifi access from Home Depot cash registers or something, I still wouldn't really care - if I was sitting somewhere with my DS, I'd probably pass the time better playing a game.

For me, I'd much rather be reading up on blogs, email, etc!
does this support more advanced html, such as the chat-function of Gmail?

The wifi_lib_test.nds has a Wardriving mode that's pretty sweet. If you've got homebrew you should already probably have it, though.
I have a pocket PC with Pocket Internet Explorer. While surfing from a mobile device is a nifty idea, in reality it's slow enough to only use when you absolutely have to. Many popular sites include mobile alternatives, but they still can be pretty slow.
Opera DS looks nice, but it would have been better if the option to browse as a mobile device was included. Mobile sites are much easier to read and use. Zooming and scrolling around to read text is annoying, which is half the reason I deleted the Wii browser.
Houston is supposed to have free, city wide Wi-Fi in the next two years.
Toronto already does, which is enough for me to want this.
However, I'm thinking of buying an R4 for DS homebrew goodness, does this browser have any advantages over the homebrew solutions? If they're around the same price and the official browser has no real benefits the homebrew stuff doesn't, I'm going to go with the R4 so I can have the ebook reader/pda/mp3/quake/etc functionality as well.

To be honest as far as I've seen, homebrew browsers haven't come very far. Most are just text-only and drop connections frequently. The extra memory pack that comes with it is probably nice.
I am planning on picking this thing up in the next couple days (have an assignment to knock off first), but once I do I'll post back here with my impressions and answer any questions you guys have.
I would have bought this if it came out stateside back when it was first being hyped, but I have absolutely no reason to get it now. I have my Treo, and the PSP browser is free. The ONLY reason I'd buy this would be if there was a reason to own the RAM cart that comes with it.
I saw it when I picked up Planet Puzzle League, but I couldn't justify forking up more cash. Maybe if there is a real drought or something I will pick it up for shites and giggles.

Although I do agree $30 is a bit much.
Porn in the Bathtub while high?
YES PLEASE
I was about to come in here and say how pointless it was, but you, sir, have sold me on this fine device.

There's no flash support guys, and certainly not enough memory to use youtube.
For me, I'd much rather be reading up on blogs, email, etc!
