RPG Supplement [chat]

BogartBogart Streetwise HerculesRegistered User, Moderator Mod Emeritus
So it's always nice to read the core books of an RPG, get your head around a new system, roll up a couple of characters, breathe in the heady aroma of possibility of what this could be like to play if, you know, you were able to lasso four friends on a regular basis to play it. But I think for me the best thing about RPGs are the supplements that come out after. The adventures, the campaigns, the settings. The stuff that pours the flavour-filled gravy over the meat and potatoes.

poxow77rvmha.jpg

Let's have a look at some, and why they're so sexy. First of all, obviously: maps. Pull out maps, floor layouts with an S for secret doors, little trees and symbols for marshlands, old-timey writing for place names, the lot.

Check out this monster pull out map from the 4E Forgotten Realms book. I pored over this for ages and took it out every time the players in my campaign went anywhere.

Or this one, detailing the internal layout of the Tower of Isengard for Middle Earth Role Playing (MERP), in case anyone is insane enough to try and break in to take on Saruman. Gorgeous.

It's not just the maps, of course, it's the tiny flavour illustrations as well. Are there little boxed insert pictures of all the major NPCs? There fuckin well better be, pal. I want them squinting suspiciously at the reader in little black and white headshots or I want my money back.

Or how about the deadly allure of a very long campaign, an epic you know in your heart you'll never actually keep the group together long enough to actually finish, but which give your sessions some sweeping narrative scope before Gary moves away and Phillipa decides that kids are more important than six hour sessions in your living room rolling dice and being a Wizard. The Enemy Within is a Warhammer campaign that is spread across five books. A real monster whose reputation is variable depending on which part you're doing, but which most agree contains some of the very best adventures ever printed. Five volumes of political chicanery, chaos corruption and intrigue? Fuck yes. Never played, want to desperately.

Or maybe just a short adventure to get people in the mood? RPGs have started doing actual starter sets now, everything you need for babby's first adventure in one box. Here's the Call of Cthulhu one.

ceo6h6wiwt2e.jpg

So, you disgusting nerds, what's the RPG adventure or campaign or supplement that you love most? What sends a thrill of pleasure down your withered, ancient spine when you see the cover? What are some terrible ones you've read? What old reliables have you gone back to over the years with multiple groups?

I played The Enemy Within in my early 20s

I got through three characters, one of which died in the very first combat round because the archer in the party didn't think that shooting into a melee combat was that dangerous

They've released an updated campaign for 4th Edition, which is pride of place on my shelf of games I hope to play one day

I’ve got the entire second edition encyclopedia magica. A set of 4 books with every single magic item in them. They are still a go to favorite for ideas.

The Ars Magica supplements are weighty tomes, too - expanded mechanics, more fluff, new example spells, the whole shebang

    One day...

one time i was doing really badly and skippy sent me a care package with some things he knew i'd like (sichuan peppercorns, some guitar picks with john mayer doing guitar face on them, a book of poetry) including that painting. it's never been clear to me if his son just painted that because he liked it and then skippy was like yoink, my depressed friend would like this. or if he was like hey my friend would love a picture of pikachu, i'm commissioning you my boy

couscous did you know that shortly after the founding of israel (and through their banning by the israeli government in the early 60s) there was a genre of porn that was popular featuring mainly female nazi guards dominating jewish men. in particular, the children of survivors were mega horny for this stuff.

Does it end with atonement at Clontarf and the death of Ireland's best chance?

I love my Monster Care Squad book. Full color! Full of fantastic ideas! Containing a relatively simple ruleset to be a bunch of Studio Ghibli-styled heroes going from town to town curing the local mythical animals from a strange disease.

I was briefly considering adding "or is this some sort of elder abuse?" comment but felt that was a bit tacky.

I have waxed rhapsodic about the glory days of White Dwarf before, back when it was a general hobbyists magazine and not purely an in-house publication, but some of the scenarios they published were fantastic. And they had regular features that gave you new D&D monsters, Call of Cthulhu material like a huge list of phobias you could give your investigators. And once, across four issues, they put together a complete city for AD&D, called Irillian.
