Tampa might be dodging a bullet. From CNN
Tampa Bay water levels are expected to swing widely, from low to high, as winds increase and change direction as Hurricane Milton moves through on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

While it appears that Tampa Bay will avoid the record surge feared if Milton passed north or directly into the bay, the proximity of Milton’s core will still significant change the bay’s water levels.

Strong winds blowing offshore will likely lead to “reverse surge” – or extremely low water levels as the winds blow water out of the bay and into the ocean until the storm passes late tonight.

But after the eye of the storm passes south of Tampa overnight, the winds over the Bay will change direction and start to blow from a more westerly direction. This will occur as the tide is also rising ahead of the normal high tide around 6 a.m ET.

Water levels are projected to rise 6 feet in 6 hours on Thursday morning, according to NOAA forecasts. At this time, water levels are not expected to reach the heights observed in Hurricane Helene two weeks ago.

We're eating at the hotel breakfast buffet since everything will be shut down after this until Friday morning at best. The number of adults getting sloshed on breakfast cocktails while housekeeping staff are upstairs bringing in all of the chairs and tables from balconies has some real last days of Rome energy.

Ok, now as a drum line marches through the restaurant and drunk adults are hooting and hollering and clapping along that energy has really amped up. Woof.

    Port Orleans?

The good news is that when the resort inevitably descends into barbarism, you will have easy access to elephants for your war engines.

Also checking in from Orlando, my neck of the woods has seen a break in the rain, but the wind's slowly starting to amp up.

Hoping the power holds out for at least a few more hours before the really nasty stuff starts to settle in.

We will settle for the sad, solitary zebra that my kids have nicknamed Steve (uh, no offense Raijin) who hangs out alone by a few trees straight across from our room most of the day every day.

This was just some bad timing. Two days off for parent teacher conferences this week so we'd planned a week at Disney since the kids only miss 3 days of school and it's less crowded than normal vacation times. We flew in Saturday morning. Weather reports were fine last I'd looked on Friday, we only heard about the storm after we checked into the hotel. Too late to get back home with the way things booked up.

Disney was offering full refunds on pretty much everything for anyone who canceled a trip. Refunds on unused hotel nights/tickets for people who left early. All unused theme park tickets are being extended for a year. They do a lot to keep kids happy in the hotels and provide a surprising amount of food and entertainment options until it becomes unsafe to do so. No complaints about how they handle things in a situation like this.

With all of the people doing live streams, it is crazy being able to just scroll through watching various areas lose power as electrical systems explode. :/

Good news everyone, no flooding, the waters all gone

That clip has the same vibe as filming the empty T-Rex pen and going "wow the T-Rex is gone". No, it's not gone it's right behind you, silly journalists, get out of there

Tampa is getting freshwater flooding now, like 7” in the last hour

It’s blowing my mind how Daytona is getting tornadoes and freaking Fort Meyers Beach is getting a massive storm surge again, this storm is so big

Sadly the BBC are quoting the sheriff’s department, saying there have been fatalities in St. Lucie county. They were caused by the tornadoes ahead of the storm. The St. Lucie sheriff’s office itself was damaged, though nobody in the sheriff’s department was hurt.

Apparently a tornado hit where I used to live in western palm beach county. And I do mean where, as in, I saw a picture of the end of my street and the main road and the house on the northeast corner is just gone.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management had to put out a warning not to walk into the area the water receded from.

The BBC are reporting that the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for… well, basically the entire middle bit of Florida, it sounds like. If you’re anywhere near there then check the NWS warning details NOW because if you’re in the warning zone you need to get to higher ground if at all possible.

It’s beyond record breaking. Its jaw hit the floor stuff. Also I hadn’t realised but apparently Tropicana Field was set up as a shelter and staging area for first responders, so with that roof gone they won’t be having a fun time in there. At least nobody should be hurt. Though quite a few may be drenched.

Just found out that it apparently collapsed right into the offices of the Tampa Bay Times. Luckily, under the circumstances, almost all of the staff were working from home.

Pretty quiet by our hotel now. Still windy and raining, but lessened considerably. Slept through the time period where the storm was supposed to pass through. Things look ok from the window of the room but it's still dark, so will have to see in a while what the actual impact was locally. Never lost power or even wifi that I'm aware of.

    The Update from BBC News:

There have been “a number” of deaths along the coast, though thus far it looks like the loss of life is nothing as terrible as was feared. The deaths so far seem to be confined to St. Lucie, where a caravan park was hit by a tornado.

St. Petersburg and Tampa recorded over EIGHTEEN INCHES of rain. Which is just mind-boggling to think about. The guts of half a meter JUST from rain, never mind any storm surge. Clearwater fared little better, reporting fourteen inches of rain.

More than three millions homes and businesses are without power. The deluge of rain means safe water supplies in St. Petersburg are cut. The city manager of Plant City is reminding people to avoid venturing into the flood water, not just because it’s powerful enough in places to knock you off your feet and sweep you away, but mostly because it’s a toxic soup of raw sewage, gas, oil and Gods knows what else.

THERE ARE STILL TORNADOS! Five people have been taken to hospital in Palm Beach County due to tornado touchdowns in the area. Keep an eye on NWS alerts and even if there’s no flooding nearby, stay indoors if you can.

Milton is now grinding his way towards the Atlantic. He’s still at Category One, and likely to remain that way right across Florida. Stay safe, Floridians!

My gf's cousin lost power so we're going to dogsit, because like our dog she's spoiled and needs AC. Thankfully she is our dog's sister so they get along well and tend to tire each other out, but we'll have to keep the baby in the playpen because they will run her over. So now I have four dogs in my house.

And this when all that area was pretty well saturated by the last hurricane. I am guessing once light comes up and they get a look at it there was a lot of flash flooding all over the place from the rain even if nothing else.
