Oh yeah, I used to scour Geocities for bands through the late 90s and think my old zine even had a page for a couple issues after I stopped the mass photocopying.
In the mid-90s I had an Angelfire page centered on guitar wanking where I reviewed like 3 or 4 dozen Shrapnel and Magna Carta releases (we talking deep cuts) from the likes of Borislav Mitic, Artension (keyboard wank on this one, was sad to find out Vitali Kuprij just died (keyboardist for Artension and Trans Siberian Orchestra)), Rusty Cooley, Alex Massi, Tony MacAlpine, Joe Stump, Chris Impelliteri, etc...

The new Keygen Church is the best 8 bit, synthwave, metal, Baroque, organ crossover release this year.
Day one of Hell's Heroes in the books. Destructor was easily the best band, those guys fucking rip. Unfortunately Autopsy had to play an abbreviated set because of a flash thunderstorm warning which despite the danger yielded neither thunder nor ligtning. Go figure. Merch was kind of a disaster. Heavy rain in the AM delayed everything being set up so the merch booth for the bands and fest shirts was ONE GUY with a line of about 100 people. Disgusting but I did wait in the line at the cost of missing most of Helstar and Occult Burial. Praying to satan things move quicker today. One major disappointment for me is the lack of vendors selling CDs and vinyl. I was really hoping to spend time perusing boxes and boxes of CDs but there was only a single vendor with a few albums available. Anyway who cares, today is Eternal Champion day!
(Side note: saw a post in the FB group for the frst requesting a nap tent with cots and I think that guy deserves a million dollars and every multi day fest should implement a nap tent going forward.)
I saw Insomnium last year with Enslaved in Denver. They didn't floor me, but they also didn't play anything from Across the Dark which is far and away my favorite of their material. Ville wasn't touring with them, presumably because of his academic duties. But, now that Jani is out of the band, maybe he'll make an appearance.

Heh, my order of CDs from Imperial Age has been delayed because they sold so many with the recent deal they had that they actually ran out for two of the albums and had to order more to be manufactured. That's a nice problem to have!
Did we talk about this one? It's Fenriz' new death metal band with some quirky, doomy vocals similar to what you've heard on a couple Darkthrone discs. I think the album comes out Friday.
I finally found a rip of the full dynamic range remaster of Morbid Angel's Domination online, and it sounds fantastic. I wish they'd put it on Bandcamp or sell it in America so I could give them my money. But alas.
On a similar note, I just learned that Fallujah's The Flesh Prevails is getting a remix/remaster this July. I can't wait. I love the music on that album, but its production is one of the worst brick-walling's ever. It hurts my ears every time. I have high hopes for this because I remembered this review of the original vinyl master and the same mastering engineer is producing the new edition.

Leaving work early to see Týr in Baltimore tonight. Opening bands include Trollfest, Aether Realm, and The Dread Crew of Oddwood. I've seen Aether Realm before and enjoyed them. Never really heard of the other two. Apparently The Dread Crew of Oddwood does acoustic folk/pirate metal.
Considering they haven't put out an album in like 39 years...I was quite happy with this one! They've got a new singer and she's got a classic Euro speed/heavy metal voice that fits really well with this material.
That’s too bad about the Rage. Although double albums are usually a red flag in that regard anyways. I can’t think of many standouts off the top of my head other than drukQs. Oh, I guess Spectral Lore and Midnight Odyssey put out some good ones.

Rage doesn’t strike me as the kind of band that should be putting out double albums anyways. They seem to work better with the more progressive bands whose variation can justify the length. Six Degrees is a good example. It doesn’t feel like a long album at all. It seems just right for its musical content.

Rage had some pretty stacked albums decades ago, they can certainly get a dozen good songs on there or even more, but the issue now is the sound is so modern and different and Peavy's vocals just don't really hang with the quality of the musicians (including himself). I don't say that lightly, the man is a hero to me and I admire how tenacious he is after all these years and lineups.
Having said that, they don't really have any stinkers in their catalogue, this is probably one of the worst and it's still a 6.5-7 just from all the effort.

It's the first show of the tour.
Missed the first band. Aether Realm are enjoyable, but their weak point is definitely the vocals. Trollfest is a very silly band. My wife joined a metal conga line during one of their songs.
Týr was pretty good. You could buy the new album at the merch booth even though it's not officially out yet, although I didn't catch what the prices were. Anyway, pretty good choice of a show for the first one I saw this year.
The music is pretty typical for the band, slammy death/deathcore with a few dynamic tricks to it, but the cover art for the new Ingested is one of the best I've seen this year. Yikes.

Hmm, didn't really treat myself to anything for my birthday back on Saturday, so just checked for available tickets to the Queensryche stop at my casino later this week. Assigned seats, not GA or standing room only, not my fave, but was able to score a 3rd row seat in the center section for $55+ fees, so I'll be seeing the Todd La Torre vintage performing all of the original debut EP and all of the Warning in a couple of days.
Hope Todd's put in some work since I last saw them, as I heard him do Lady Wore Black and Walk in Shadows and he was a little rough and not dialed completely in on the older Tate material.
If he can hit the E5 at the end of the first verse of Take Hold of the Flame, I'll buy him whatever libation he desires if I can arrange it.

I'd say Escape Velocity and 2 or 3 of their EPs have been a tad uneven, but nothing approaching bad overall.

Yeah I don't think any albums are bad but some are better experiences than others for sure. I just bought the new CD.

Diving into the new Rage double-album.

There are too many filler songs on the new Rage, and Peavy's voice just does not sound good if you pay any amount of attention to it.
Though I guess that one is more two separate albums pretending to be one.

I'd call it "pleasant".
Side note: seems like I picked up covid-19 from that Tyr show last Thursday. That's two times in a row that I went to Baltimore and got covid.

My top 5 picks are:
1. Slimelord
2. Coffin Storm
3. Stress Angel
4. Necrophobic
5. Midnight
But let's not forget Bruce Dickenson, Judas Priest or Skeletal Remains either! Those were killer as well!
Was a little underwhelmed by Necrophobic, and haven't got a chance to spin the Stress Angel or Skeletal Remains as of yet.
