The [Cricket] Thread: 2023 Ashes Series

TraceTrace GNU Terry Pratchett; GNU Gus; GNU Carrie Fisher; GNU Adam WeRegistered User regular
Hello and welcome to the inaugural Penny Arcade Cricket Thread. This is where we talk about that weird and wonderful sport that is Cricket and all the drama that can surround it at times.

Thread rules are as follows.

1.) Keep the shit talking in the realm of banter please. Cricket has a long and storied history of banter, it's basically part of the game. Sometimes it moves past banter into actual insults and meanness. Don't do that.

2.) Be inclusive. Cricket's a weird sport and most people can't parse what the hell they're watching and just what's an LBW anyways? Part of the goal of this thread is to get at least a few more people interested in the sport. So answer questions, this isn't the Lords Members Stand.

3.) IF you don't know a thing about the sport other than that it's weird and you feel the need to come in here and make a "Cricket what a weird sport eh" joke. Don't bother, as fans we've heard them all and frankly we're a bit bored with them.

4.) Have fun. Cricket is weird and it lends itself to all sorts of memes. If I don't see at least one classic Cricket copypasta from someone in here before the Ashes series is over I've failed at my task.

The Ashes is a 5 game series between England and Australia. So to answer your question, the Australians.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWpbtLIxYBk is a pretty good overview (well, it helped me) if you're familiar w/ baseball.

There's a US Pro Cricket league now!

Just to be honest, I was teasing. It's our version of the US's "World Series Baseball".

Or perhaps not, as the Women's Ashes are also kicking off around the same time which is unusual for these kinds of sports.

no videos of guys getting hit in their privates with the ball circle?

  • BogartBogart Streetwise Hercules Registered User, Moderator Mod Emeritus
The accepted commentary euphemism is "hit amidships".

England have won the toss and will bat, in the thrilling new hard-hitting fast-scoring tradition of what I am definitely the first to call Bazball.

I have only started one thread on these forums, it was 12 years ago and it was a cricket thread. My brief, little pride and joy.

    Anyway, bring on the Ashes!

The best part of Bazball is the emperor’s new clothes aspect - 170 years of test orthodoxy blown up by ‘just score loads of runs lol’

    I FUCKING OVERSLEPT!

103/2 and... it's Zak Crawley on a half?!

Absolutely insane first day. Harry Brook got bloody robbed.

    Root’s three consecutive reverse sweeps - 4, dismissed/overturned, 4 - was madness

Chuffed for Bairstow, Lyon is a cricketing supercomputer.

  • TraceTrace GNU Terry Pratchett; GNU Gus; GNU Carrie Fisher; GNU Adam We Registered User regular
About an over after Bairstow got out they had to change the ball because Bairstow had smacked the thing so hard the seam wound up splitting.

    Day 3. Australia are 365/6

Starting to think Stokes maybe shouldn't have declared but who knows.

England just bowled Australia out, and England still lead by 7.

Mooen Ali might be injured though. Looks like he tore his hand/webbing open again.

And Darth Vader just got escorted out of the grounds.

    Yes, this really happened.

Feels like it might hinge on the bowlers now, the pitch having woken up abit

    Day 4

    England lead by 118.

I was sure Australia were going to grind out the necessary total and Smith and Warner would both get hundreds and grin their big Australian grins but hey ho here comes ol' Broady with a twinkle in his eye. Final day, presuming the rain holds off, will be good.

Oh that was a magical spell by Broad. Nobody gets the crowd going quite like Broad and he got 'em both in like 12 deliveries. I was sure the crowd was just going to storm and pitch and crown Broad King of England right there.

Anyways today has the morning session washed out, with lunch being taken a half hour later.

If we get any play today and the stupid English weather doesn't do stupid stuff conditions will heavily favor England, with Australia needing a Bazballesque like run rate to have a chance.
25.3 to SPD Smith, GONE, Broad nicks him off! Smith's feet are stuck, the bat groping out in front as the ball seams and kisses the edge. Broad has blasted out another as the shadows lengthen at Edgbaston! England are tearing around, the crowd go ballistic as the ball nestles in Bairstow's gloves and he starts laying into an imaginary punchbag. No doubt about this one, a huge moment in the chase.

Everyone went fucking nuts when Broad got Smith last night.

Well that's just about that then. Well played Australia.

Sort of like how the 2005 Ashes started out honestly.

    Bugger.

    @Bogart

Look we've got the meme team stuff out of our system and honestly, Bairstow taking a few more chances changes the entire equation (BRING FOAKES IN, DROP CRAWLEY, OPEN WITH YJB) and it winds up with England winning.

In all honesty the declaration on the first day might've done for us. An extra 50 runs or so and Australia probably close up the shop and at least leave us 0-1-0 but it says something that there isn't a feeling of existential dread going around the whole English side at the moment.

  • TraceTrace GNU Terry Pratchett; GNU Gus; GNU Carrie Fisher; GNU Adam We Registered User regular

You fucking Australian bastards made Alastair Cook cry. That's fucking done it. You think the emus kicked your asses, you just wait until England gets done. You won't have asses left to kick!

  • TraceTrace GNU Terry Pratchett; GNU Gus; GNU Carrie Fisher; GNU Adam We Registered User regular
    Right.

Second Test between England and Australia is set to start in a little over 8 hours from now.

    https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/3558327/england-men-name-xi-for-second-lv-insurance-mens-ashes-test

England have named their XI for the game. No Moeen this time around, but Josh Tongue is in for the all seam attack. We've got some rain on the first, third, and fourth days of the match potentially. The pitch looks like a normal England pitch, which is good cause I don't think the England attack could handle another Edgbaston pitch.

Well let's check in on the Cricket shall we?

Australia made 416 runs yesterday. Yikes.

England are 85/0 going into the 17th over and Crawley of all the players looks set to get another half-ton.

However Ollie Pope hurt his shoulder bad enough yesterday he's probably not fielding in the second innings and while the English side say he's good to bat that's an iffy proposition at best so we'll see.
