The [Cricket] Thread: 2023 Ashes Series
Hello and welcome to the inaugural Penny Arcade Cricket Thread. This is where we talk about that weird and wonderful sport that is Cricket and all the drama that can surround it at times.
Thread rules are as follows.
1.) Keep the shit talking in the realm of banter please. Cricket has a long and storied history of banter, it's basically part of the game. Sometimes it moves past banter into actual insults and meanness. Don't do that.
2.) Be inclusive. Cricket's a weird sport and most people can't parse what the hell they're watching and just what's an LBW anyways? Part of the goal of this thread is to get at least a few more people interested in the sport. So answer questions, this isn't the Lords Members Stand.
3.) IF you don't know a thing about the sport other than that it's weird and you feel the need to come in here and make a "Cricket what a weird sport eh" joke. Don't bother, as fans we've heard them all and frankly we're a bit bored with them.
4.) Have fun. Cricket is weird and it lends itself to all sorts of memes. If I don't see at least one classic Cricket copypasta from someone in here before the Ashes series is over I've failed at my task.

Which other teams are in this year?
The Ashes is a 5 game series between England and Australia. So to answer your question, the Australians.

Jomboy with a fairly comprehensive breakdown about how this sport works.
There's a US Pro Cricket league now!
Just to be honest, I was teasing. It's our version of the US's "World Series Baseball".
Or perhaps not, as the Women's Ashes are also kicking off around the same time which is unusual for these kinds of sports.

Anyway, bring on the Ashes!
103/2 and... it's Zak Crawley on a half?!

Absolutely insane first day. Harry Brook got bloody robbed.
Chuffed for Bairstow, Lyon is a cricketing supercomputer.
Stokes just got Smith now.
Starting to think Stokes maybe shouldn't have declared but who knows.
Mooen Ali might be injured though. Looks like he tore his hand/webbing open again.
Yes, this really happened.
The field set up for the delivery that got Khawaja out.
England lead by 118.

Oh that was a magical spell by Broad. Nobody gets the crowd going quite like Broad and he got 'em both in like 12 deliveries. I was sure the crowd was just going to storm and pitch and crown Broad King of England right there.
Anyways today has the morning session washed out, with lunch being taken a half hour later.
If we get any play today and the stupid English weather doesn't do stupid stuff conditions will heavily favor England, with Australia needing a Bazballesque like run rate to have a chance.
Everyone went fucking nuts when Broad got Smith last night.
Let's go.
Sort of like how the 2005 Ashes started out honestly.

I'll be honest, Cricket is a total fucking mystery to me. Is there a good rules video explainer anybody would recommend?
@Bogart
Look we've got the meme team stuff out of our system and honestly, Bairstow taking a few more chances changes the entire equation (BRING FOAKES IN, DROP CRAWLEY, OPEN WITH YJB) and it winds up with England winning.
In all honesty the declaration on the first day might've done for us. An extra 50 runs or so and Australia probably close up the shop and at least leave us 0-1-0 but it says something that there isn't a feeling of existential dread going around the whole English side at the moment.
You fucking Australian bastards made Alastair Cook cry. That's fucking done it. You think the emus kicked your asses, you just wait until England gets done. You won't have asses left to kick!
Second Test between England and Australia is set to start in a little over 8 hours from now.

England have named their XI for the game. No Moeen this time around, but Josh Tongue is in for the all seam attack. We've got some rain on the first, third, and fourth days of the match potentially. The pitch looks like a normal England pitch, which is good cause I don't think the England attack could handle another Edgbaston pitch.
it's baseball with different shapes, the rest is just details
Australia made 416 runs yesterday. Yikes.
England are 85/0 going into the 17th over and Crawley of all the players looks set to get another half-ton.
However Ollie Pope hurt his shoulder bad enough yesterday he's probably not fielding in the second innings and while the English side say he's good to bat that's an iffy proposition at best so we'll see.
