The transition team has drafted a new document of Guiding Principles and New Rules for our community. These rules will go into effect on November 25. 2024.
I should really go back and read Methods of Rationality now that it's done to see how dumb it got.
Pretty dumb, but not as dumb as people guessing the pretty obvious final solution way in advance and the author having to keep kayfabe through the whole final release process.
Pretty much. It is where the Pikmin bring dead enemies to make Pikmin out of them.
Also Pikmin 4 spoiler:
The way this comic's joke is structured makes me think Katie hasn't seen the reveal that Leaflings are made by running a castaway through a Pikmin onion
Eh, you can have scientia without science. Known things passed down faithfully and recorded accurately, but lacking in the predictive power of, say, your theory of gravity, if you want to build a novel design of building that still retains that all-important "standing up" feature and need to know how much weight is coming down where.
So the invisibility potion requires lavender. Does the lavender need to be fresh, or can it be dried? Do you need the greens, the buds, the flowers? What if it's preserved? What if it's preserves (you know, jam)? Which of the 47 species of plants called "lavender"? I'm assuming English lavender because setting reasons, but do French and Spanish lavender also work? It'd be weird if English worked and Spanish didn't, because Spanish is the one that the original Romans named "lavandarius", the washing-up herb, because dirty things are yellowed and they need to get blued. The Greeks knew it as "nardus", an import from the Syrian city of Naarda. Does spikenard work? The scent's a bit alike, after all.
Or is it about the concept of lavender? If you have a tin of pale blue flower buds labeled "lavender" but somebody swapped out the lavender, does it still work if you believe you're putting lavender in? If you brought someone in from your Indian sister school and had them follow the potion-making steps but told them they were working with a variety of India-native spikenard, would it still work? Does it help if you have "Lavender's Blue" stuck in your head? Does it help more or less if it's the really old raunchy version?
Doing sound research and making accurate observations is an important part of the scientific method, but the more important part is taking that truthful record of the world and being able to turn it into new knowledge. The more of a science "making an invisibility potion with lavender" is, the more it's able to answer these questions, and the more it's able to make accurate predictions about scenarios which nobody's tried yet.
You know… I really hope they have the urge to start pushing random buttons when Max shows up. Unless they have some special knowledge on how it works, it will probably feel like they just got dropped into a fighter jet’s pilot seat and all the buttons have been randomized and the text scraped off.
