I never watched TechTV so I can't jump on the "G4 raped 'em!" bandwagon, but good lord G4 is horrible nowadays. Even the most jaded "TechTV was Life!" fan has got to admit that the days of Arena reruns, Cinematech, a slightly less hyperactive joke-machine X-Play, and Attack of the Show with Kevin Rose, Sarah Lane, and Brendan Moran is a lot better than f'n "In Your Pants" segments, retarded British boob-showcasing "news reporters", reruns of Cheaters, and of course the idiotic chat box attachment. Whomever said G4's mission statement was "Great we have a network of tech, lets add boobs and sex!" was dead on. Good lord.

I agree with that. I still remember a few years ago when I first discovered TechTV. I loved that channel and watched it a lot. I remember Halo 2 day though I don't know if that was G4TV then.
Are there any channels left that are technology oriented? Podcasts are nice, but a tech channel on old-fashioned media would be nice.
G4 is barely a video game channel, much less a tech channel.
As far as I know. No
TechTV was the first and last.

They cancelled Cinematech? What? So much for that channel's only reason for existing.

I think the two merged in May of 2004, so Halo 2 coming out in November, yeah, it had to be their doing. I really doubt TechTV would pull something like that.
Anybody remember the days that they celebrated the DS and PSP's launches by framing their shows in the screens of the two? Dumb as it was, at least you got something worth watching in the DS's second screen, which consisted of DS gameplay.

I'll admit I do enjoy X-play and Attack of the Show. On AotS they had a Sony rep on there one time and the guy was busting the Rep's chops about how the PS3 is $600 bucks and yet Sony can't kick in a $15 dollar cable. Plus who can forget Adam Sessler arguing with Jack Thompson, that was a good one.
Still, even though I like those two shows it wasn't a good trade to lose all the good stuff TechTV had.
Edit: Man, who remembers when X-play used to be Exteneded Play which used to be Gamespot TV? (Did I miss any?)

Cinematech was the only reason I went anywhere near G4 recently. I haven't seen any regular runs of it lately (has it been phased out/dropped from the day lineup?), although they still run the Nocturnal Emissions edition at certain points in the week.

I wouldn't be surprised if it had been. It was good so it needed to go.

The regular Cinematech was on for about an hour (Two 30 minute blocks) around 9 or 10 am today. That's all I saw of it.

G4 is pretty much dead at this point. It's too bad, for while I cannot always condone the random shit they put Sessler through X-Play has a remarkably canny skill when it comes to reviewing a game. Rarely do they ever really not get the true mesure a game.

Filter is still around. It's shitty though with Howard Stern's girlfriend..
The original Filter kicked all kinds of ass.
It was cut for a while though. So technically, the new Filter isn't even the same show.
And I was wondering who the hell that host was. They kept blathering in the commercials for it how "It's *******!!! (I don't even remember her name) As if I'm supposed to know who the hell she was.

I enjoyed Sessler way more when I watched him on Extended Play. Sure he might have made some jokes or even done a dumb field piece that probably brought on the idea of X-Play (like RPG camp, or something), but he reviewed games way more objectively and they reviewed at least seven games in an episode without all the wacky shit.
Now X-Play barely gets through four reviews, usually because they spend all their time making jokes and coming up with idiot segments that have nothing to do with reviewing a game and more about making a huge, three to four minute joke about a video game series or something.

While I hate G4 forever for their ruining of TechTV and "The Screen Savers," I guess they are somewhat responsible for the rise of TWiT, which I think is an excellent podcast. So yeah, I guess something good came out of G4

TechTV got bought because every other commercial slot was filled with that stupid advertisement for themselves with the kid throwing the glider plane. Not only is it pointless, but it doesn't pay the bills to throw away airtime like that.
Too bad the people who bought them out are on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, when it comes to attitude on show quality vs. advertising revenue/marketing.
I remember before G4 merged with TechTV there was this show on G4 my friend had showed me (I didn't get G4 on my TV at the time) called Portal, and it was basically MMORPG Machinima: The Series. It wasn't the greatest thing in the world, but they used to have this running gag with Michael Jackson popping up in Second Life that always made me crack up. I wonder what would have happened to it had it been concieved nowadays when so many people play WoW.
And it makes me sad to see Cinematech get phased out. Bad enough they turned Icons into a shitfest.
Talking about phasing out. What ever happened to the E! transition?
Wasn't G4 going to be turned into E!-2 right about now?

Well, that is more due to them being one of the two shows on the network still being produced. XPlay has "new" content 3 days a week for at least three weeks any given month. This can be problematic in dead times of year like right now.
Still, I doubt this show will be around at the end of the year, I'm pretty sure it is getting the axe.

I could go into a entire rant about this seeing as how I loved TechTv and despised G4 but I will make this short.
The day they reviewed Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and said "You are Sam Fisher and you will shoot things, a lot" I lost a lot of faith in those people behind the scenes writing the reviews.
Wonder what X-Play would be like if it turns into a freelance podcast.
X-Play without the idiot marketing/demographic reps.

And what's with them showing retarded stuff like COPS, and that reality show where douche bags are caught cheating on their wives? It needs more content that demo would actually be interested in.
FreddyD that's the best line I've seen all day.
Their new focus demographic is to appeal to men aged 18-35 and try to be "hip". They no longer have anything resembling techtv.
What really pissed me off was they canned screwed but then bought some rip off late night show with a puppet and some tits.
And I dont know what else to call it be there is nothing scientific about the experiments braniac does. They are more like stunts than science.
And shit X-play is a travesty at best. They play a game just long enough to find an anoying clip that they can play 10 tens and then whine through the rest of it. I think the writers spend more time coming up with skits then trying to make their reviews coherent.
Seriously this channel should be flushed and forgotten.

I wish there was a channel for gamers and techies.
The Discovery Channel is pretty close. They have more game and tech content than G4.
I remember a few weeks back in which the DiscoveryTimes channel did a thing on the history or video games or something to that effect. It was pretty cool. Showed something about a mega lan in Iceland.

There are probably others that I missed, but they reference each other a lot
My Friday night in eighth grade consisted of Invader Zim, Extended Play, Eye Drops, and Friday Night Stand-up.
Basically, I've always wondered where to find more stuff like Eye Drops. Does anyone know where I can find it? I know Animusic put out a second volume, but there were a lot of other really cool shorts (my favorite ever was called "Walk") and I'd love to find something in that vein.
