[Podcasts] are all on break

Let's talk about podcasts everyone!

Good podcasts:
- Bigfeets: It's about Mountain Monsters, the television LARP put on by retired fools that destroyed every travel-related channel
- The Dogg Zzone: It's about random media items, and generally pretty funny. It has Seanbaby, who's doing better than anyone would have predicted
- Hollywood Handbook: Sean and Hayes have been doing improv for a long time and they use that skill to trap guests in Hell
- Cerebro: Twenty hours about a comic-book character that appears in eight panels over the course of fifty years
- Boonta Vista: Australians make fun of the United States to deal with the understandable ennui that comes with not being a Main Character country. Also they make intros that are aggressively difficult for new listeners as a lark
- QAA: In a just world, this would not currently be a podcast
- Mormon Stories: Possibly the longest-running podcast, hosted by Mormon Satan who's extremely nice

And finally a plea:

Is there an actually good gaming podcast that focuses on things that are not the top of the Top Selling lists on Steam? I keep trying to find a general "talk about 10 different interesting games that came out recently" podcast and I keep finding people spending an hour and a half discussing the most popular game that came out this year. I want a critical dissection of Sorry We're Closed or something. Shut Up and Sit Down but for games.

The biggest podcast thing that happened to me this year is that Ross and Carrie aren't friends anymore, and Carrie seems like she's in a real bad place, and it really bums me out. Their year end prediction podcast was always an important part of the drive home from family Christmas for me, so it's hitting particularly hard this week.

I like the NoClip Crew Cast if you want less obvious games coverage. They're always talking about games I haven't heard of.

Really enjoying the Retronauts Christmas tradition of increasingly absurd wrap-around segments.

This year Bob got a time machine that makes things 2013 from his future self so it's not hack to talk about Captain N: The Game Master on a podcast.

This is far from a secret here but Shelved by Genre is my fav pod of the last 2 years. Been reading along since it started. Another season starts soon, on Gibson.
Austin Walker may be the best podcaster of all time but here he is joined by academic heavyweights and it's both insightful and really funny.

Castle Superbeast is the only podcast I still keep up with. Used to keep up with Writing Excuses and still strongly recommend listening through their very lengthy backlog if you have any interest in writing, but recent seasons are a big drop off IMO, and not just because Brandon Sanderson left (I'm not a huge fan of his writing, but his teaching is excellent).

Castle Superbeast is Pat (Stares At) and Woolie (Versus) from what was Super Best Friends Play doing gaming news and wild digressions for like 4 hours a week.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but It Coulld Happen Here does their Book Club on Sundays where they read short stories and novellas from various authors. Over the holidays they've been doing a bit where they're covering the Dino Wars of 2054 and it's very silly. Much enjoy.

I'm watching the MBMBaM Candlenights special and it's pretty cute! Also I listened to the Comedy Bang Bang Holiday Spectacular and it's really good! I particularly liked the extremely bold choice of the ending bit where Gil Ozeri was the Deluca's Chophouse phone tree checking in on Scott Auckerman's dinner reservation. Just relentless energy for a very good bad idea. Also Vic Michelis as Scott's lawyer telling him why bits from the previous year were getting him sued was excellent.

I gotta listen to some back episodes, it's been a bit since I listened regularly.

weirdly, I've been seeing news of multiple break-ups of long-term relationships from people I know from podcasts. Trixie Mattel apparently broke up with her long-term partner (Unnnhhh/Bald & the Beautiful podcast); Paige DeSorbo talked about her break-up on the most recent Giggly Squad episode, and Lisa Hanawalt just mentioned via blog/comic that she and Adam Conover split up.

I only listen to the Acq Inc podcast for gaming and I'm about 4 episodes behind.

I listen to about 4 or 5 hockey podcasts and I'm on a kick with history podcasts (Rest is History, everything Dan Carlin, a few different series from Noiser).

I'm also listening to The 500 - a comedian is going through the Rolling Stone 500 Albums list from 2003. A different album with a different guest each week. About every third episode, he talks about quitting the show but he's powering through. Currently on number 180, so the end is in sight.

Podcasts would be great if most of them did not have ads every 5min.

It's an oldie, but I still favor the now extinct podcast " Tank Riot".

Some of the podcasts I listen to have gotten somehow even worse with ads than before. They have a built in "break" for their own ads, but then the shitty general ones get inserted mid sentence or right after the regular ad read.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Of the dozen or so podcasts I listen to 2 of them have ads, and 2 or less ads for either of those.

It's a long story but the summary is a friend of his that died tried to get him to listen to all the albums on the list. So he started doing one album per week as an homage.
The podcast started around 2018 but I don't think he was aware of the 2012 rerank when he started.

Old episodes of Rude Tales of Magic are ads baked into the episode and then inserted ads cutting them off and then back to the ads baked into the episode.

Interesting. I hadn't realized it had gotten so bad. The couple of podcasts that I listen to who I would consider professional (they do it for a living) are sustained mostly by patreon rather than ads.

The ad breaks get long but I haven't had any insert in the middle of the show. I do know Spotify in particular has problems adding ads in the wrong places, and it can super fuck up if you're streaming the podcasts rather than downloading them. But mostly I Just hit the skip forward button a few times and get back to the pod.

I just listened to the released bonus episode of Hollywood Handbook where they have Dropout people on and it's extremely good and savage. Vic saying that success with Dropout took "a lot of years of long-form improv" audibly hurt The Boys, and then Zac Oyama saying that he used to watch their improv show and think "I'm going to do that myself, but I'll do it at Madison Square Garden because I'll be much more successful" maybe killed them.
