SEGA AND BIOWARE COLLABORATE ON NEW SONIC ROLE PLAYING GAME FOR THE NINTENDO DS
LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (Thurs 21st June 2007) -- SEGA® Europe, Ltd., SEGA® of America, Inc. and Canada-based developer studio BioWare® Corp. today announced a partnership to create a new video game based on the classic SEGA flagship icon, Sonic The Hedgehog. The exact name of the game is undetermined, but this new title developed exclusively for the Nintendo DS will ship in 2008.
“BioWare is one of the hottest names in RPG development in the world,†said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America, Inc. “Everyone at SEGA has huge confidence that Sonic is in the safest of hands, and that BioWare can create the ultimate handheld RPG experience for gamers of all ages.â€
BioWare is the award-winning independent developer that has created some of the world's best-selling titles including the Baldur's Gate™ and Neverwinter Nights™ series, the 2003 Game of the Year, Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic™ and the 2005 RPG of the Year, Jade Empire.™ BioWare is currently developing one of the most anticipated next-generation titles of 2007, Mass Effect.™
“We’re thrilled to be working with SEGA on Sonic, one of the industry’s most enduring and compelling icons,†said Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare. “As huge fans of Sonic ourselves, we’re committed to delivering a truly amazing story-driven experience within the Sonic universe, focusing on capturing the character’s broad appeal and placing him in a completely original adventure,†added Ray Muzyka, chief executive officer of BioWare.
The relationship with BioWare reinforces SEGA’s increased emphasis on Western content development for Western audiences. In the past few years SEGA has announced partnerships with developers Bizarre Creations, Gas Powered Games, Monolith Productions, Obsidian Entertainment, Planet Moon Studios, Pseudo Interactive and Silicon Knights. SEGA has also acquired development studios The Creative Assembly, Secret Level and Sports Interactive.
Just when you thought they'd picked up on the fact that a Sonic not speeding sideways sucks, here comes an RPG where he can hit on even more human women. Prepare for the Green hedgehog with an attitude. POISON! RAWR!
This, uh. This could be awesome considering it's being done by Bioware, but I can't think of an existing video game character less suited to a full-out RPG than Sonic.

That's pretty much my exact thought on the subject. It just makes no sense to me.
I, uh, I just can't see any way this could be good. Bioware or no.
I seem to remember thinking the same thing when another Iconic franchise was given to a different legendary RPG developer....... One Squaresoft made Super Mario RPG later and I was able to see the error of my ways.

Mario.
Mario isn't known for speed. Neither are RPGs.
Mario isn't know for the story. RPGs are known for the stories.
That doesn't mean they couldn't make it about the speed. Have your characters be able to go into turbo mode or something similar.

So? It's goddamn Bioware. This ensures it's going to be at least good if not awesome.
But what the hey, let's all shit over a game we know nothing about except the developer and the genre, even though the developer happens to be really fucking good about making games in that genre.

I'm not shitting over the game, I'm expressing skepticism. Like I said, Bioware is an awesome company, and I love their output. But I'm concerned that Sonic won't translate well. Yes, I realize other classic characters have made the jump, but I'm a bit worried that we won't have the freedom to tear through the landscape as Sonic does best.
Shitting on the game would be "OMG this game is teh suxors," which I haven't gotten anywhere near.
While I am almost 100% sure it won't be, if this uses Archie comics storyline/characters, I will be all over it.

I am still curious how RPG battles could go with this thing? I can understand maybe Knuckles and Shadow (using his gun, olol) but how will Sonic fight? Like, will he just spin dash into guys in a turn based setting? Hmm, this will definitely be interesting.
Of course, knowing Bioware, you will probably get to make your own furr- er, character and play as them, determining if you will join the side of Sonic or the evil Doctor Robotnik.
I have to say, I read this and got the message, "Hey guys, we here at Sega have realized we suck too hard to produce anything good with the Sonic name anymore, so here's a company that shits solid gold titles to take care of ya!"
I hate pretty much every Sonic game ever made, because of their focus on speed and lack of focus on exploration.
So this confuses me. I think I hate it even moreso, because Sega has stretched themselves so thin on genres that they're willing to submit their speediest character to a slow, precise genre in an attempt to revive him in the eyes of gamers. So while I wouldn't play a traditional-style Sonic game, I sure as hell won't play a compromised one, either.

WAY TO GO BIOWARE
This sounds awesome to me.
"Sonic! We need help! Dr. Robotnik has kidnapped my daughter"
1) I´ll help you!
2)I´ll help you but give me all your rings!
3)Haha! I´m evil! Die!
Hell. I can´t wait for this.

*checks dick* Yup, really hard.
Mario.
Why not? Bioware is a great developer.

*edit* DAMN YOU TITMOUSE. *shakes fist*
Question: and maybe TSR can correct me on this, was Sonic developed/created in america?

Now someone just needs to announce a Kirby RPG and my life will be complete.
PLEASE BE THE STORY FROM THE COMICS.

I don't think the game has to be slow.
Just incase some idiots here think that a 2d sidescrolling character cant be worked into a magnificent RPG.
Least of all by fucking Bioware.
On that note, I wonder how health will be handled. Having HP in a Sonic game would be pretty weird.
Thanks to Bioware, I am upgrading my pessimism to cautious optimism. They've definitely shown they can do IPs right.
Whoa!
hmm...
buh? <---
meh
BAH!
Could be interesting but need more info. Sonic is much weirder than Mario for an RPG. Sonic is about speed and rings and spinnin.
Should be used to that by now.

It was pretty cool.
Look it up if you want to.
As long as they're not spikes from Sonic 1...
And yeah, can't really see Sonic doing too well in a menu based RPG. An action RPG, on the other hand...
