I swear we had an omeganaut in the past who said they were a practiced singer... and then they bombed in the karaoke round. But perhaps I'm remembering wrong.
So, any idea when they will be releasing more specific details on the games? I know the games just got announced, but I'm looking for of an idea as to what versions of each games should we be focusing on. Don't get me wrong, I'll fire up Pac-Man and eat some damned dots, but should I be playing Pac-Man Championship Edition instead? I think it would also answer a lot of questions poised here if someone would clarify the rules on how the games will play out, especially Puzzle Quest.
Sorry to be picky sounding, just getting all stoked for PAX! Oh, I'm calling a Cyber Sled finals! (just kidding)

I wonder if they might pull a pacman, then a pacman CE for the final round.
Close. I'd lean toward the Ms.
The reason being that it is possible to memorize patterns to play pac-man forever, not so with his better half.
Crap. I knew somebody was going to let that cat out of the bag.
But knowing the patterns and actually being able to do them is two completely different things. I've tried them on the arcade cabinet, the Jaxx version and the XBLA versions and have I seen the split level yet? nope. Plus, if everybody knows the patterns, then all it comes down to a marathon. It's the only omegathon event set for Friday... so I think people could do it for 5 hours... no pain, no gain.

With all the talk about how PAX dropped Diceland because it was dull to watch, I very much doubt they'll favor a 5-hour marathon of anything. Either they'd cut it off once four people dropped out, or they'd run a version of the game that doesn't permit rote play.
I'm of course hoping for the latter... I'm not sure I can stomach as many hours of Pac-Man as it would take for me to drill patterns like that. -.-"
I don't think this question will be answered, though (and consider this re: the clamor for more details, too)--isn't this the first time they've announced the games this far in advance? I suspect they'll keep a little ambiguity in there so the 'Nauts are at least a bit on their toes.

Yeah, Dave and I were planning on a two week gaming blitz before heading to PAX since the weren't announced till Aug 11th last year. But now we can take our time with these games... now the question becomes where can I go to play Calling All Cars...
I picked up the American Idol edition of Karaoke Revolution. I can already say, this is going to be bad.
Yeah... After playing some of it last night... I'm bringing earplugs for that round.
I told my wife that I'm not doing anything this weekend but finishing my case mod and playing some vidjagames. So, I'm thinking of throwing up a dedicated quake3 server called "Omeganaut Training". I'll pretty much leave it open to the world, so anyone who wants to play along is more then welcome. I may be using a different name in there as to keep my skill level a secret.
If you're looking to get your frag on this weekend, look for it.
This is a heads up for all our Omeganauts. I had originally told you all that the first round of the Omegathon would be Pac-Man. That game has actually been replaced with Jenga. Not the new Wii version of Jenga but actual wood blocks on a table Jenga. Sorry for the mix up.

Is he serious?
I kind of hope he is... it would be good to see something that isn't a video game back in the omegathon.
But it would have been like trying to beat your best buddies high score at the arcade, but you only have one chance to do it. That would be some major stress! But I suppose your right, a PvP would be more entertaining for both the players and the crowd.
I personally think Villa Paletti would have been a much better choice than Jenga. It's a lot more fun to watch, easier to see, and has more skill and strategy than Jenga.
If you really need to have 4 groups of 5, then you can easily just buy a 5th set, and add tape to the rods as the 5th color.
(For those of you who don't know what Villa Paletti is, it's a balancing dexterity boardgame, where you have platforms balanced on rods, and each turn a person needs to move one of their own rods to the top platform. New platforms are then added when no more rods can be removed from the lower levels.)
it might work if the game was started at the exact same time on 2 screens so people could compare scores in real time, it ovbiously wouldnt be epic if one guy played then the other
When I first read about Jenga, I was told it was just a practical joke that I shouldn't take seriously. However, knowing how twisted the duo behind Penny Arcade is, I anticipate it to be completely serious. We all know that there is a Wii version of Jenga coming out, and it looks like it will be one of the stupidest, most redundant games ever. So why not have real Jenga as a competitive game for once?
Hopefully Atari will be there so they can see this and take note.
I guess it just means that we have a 6th game to play. Sucks for me as I bit the bullet last night and added pac man CE and Ms. Pacman to my practice rotation, "just in case". :P

I imagine watching JENGA will be a hoot, especially if a lot of people are watching. Plus, everybody watching would probably have to be really quiet. Really, really quiet.....until the bricks fall.
I wonder if it will be Ultimate Jenga (where there are different coloured blocks, and you roll a die to see which colour to pull), some other variety (if there are other varieties) or classic.
I guess it's time to practice yet another first round game. And I was getting good at pac man too. I just wanted to also confirm with everyone that it's without a doubt not a practical joke because I received an e-mail from the Chief Omegatech that the round had indeed changed.
I don't like this round change for 2 reasons.
1) Jenga gives heavy favor to what order you're playing in
2) There isn't nearly as much player skill involved except not being dumb and poking the wrong block.
Unless we're doing some sort of multiple-elimination 1 on 1 Jenga Tournament, I don't understand how Jenga fits in with the rest of the Omegathon games.
Though I don't know about its fitting in with the rest of this year's games, it does make sense as a replacement of past years' Diceland. Consider:
It's a tabletop game;
It involves physical action (making it more spectator-friendly than something like e.g. Carcassone);
It's the sort of thing you can practice and get better at, but
It still involves a hefty amount of luck.
And that last is important. The Omegathon may be the awesomest gaming tournament there is, but it doesn't pretend to be a hardcore skill-based contest start to finish. If it were, we'd have qualifying rounds throughout the year, such that the final 20 Omeganauts are only the best of the best. Jenga's here in part to shake things up, so that maybe the badassedest Quake masters might get eliminated by fluke chance in Round 1, making the FPS round anyone's game.

IMHO of course, but it feels right to me.
I love the idea of Jenga. I agree with SabreCat, there is lots of luck involved with the Omegathon. I still remember what I told Dave when I decided to go for the media pass instead of the normal pass and a chance at the Omegathon. "I don't play the lottery." So why not pick games that involve a little luck? Plus, FPS and fighting games were never big in my family when I was younger... so this whole tourney reminds me of those times where we would have massive Bust-A-Move and Combat and Maze Craze battles for hours on end. And I still remember when my brothers had a SMB race using our two NES systems. Anywhoo... I gotta get back to work, but I can't want to yell JENGA!!!!

Seriously though, I'm hoping this will turn out well. I think that there should be a round table with no chairs with the Omeganauts taking turns pulling pieces. Everyone should have to form a circle around the table with no one within 5 feet of the table. Oh yeah, make the entire room quiet and have all games played one at a time to increase the drama.

Quiet? Everyone who's watching should be chanting "Jenga".

Thanks, we had to think of it on the fly. I like the idea of the crowd either being quiet or starting really soft and chanting "Jenga" louder as the player is pulling the piece out. No stomping the feet though, that would be unfair. Also, just to spice it up a bit, each player should be given one "scream at the top of your lungs distraction". Well, that may be a bit much I suppose.....

I'm having quake 3 problems as well. I have the disc so that I could get the server up and going, but I couldn't find my key. (Key is not needed for server). Anyone know a website that has a digital distribution of Quake 3? I live in the middle of the boonies, and there isn't a place that sells PC games for 70 miles.... and that's Walmart.

Besides, Jenga is more fun. Just drink a little bit before playing. Something alcoholic.
