and the 360 3 red lights still haven't been fixed and can't find wiis for under 300$ and oh god oh god i'm scared and confused.

Beyond Resistance, there is absolutely no reason to by a PS3 at this point, unless you like basing spending half a thousand dollars on the promise that there will eventually someday be good games you won't be able to play on other, less pricey consoles not ran by a company that has spent the last two years making the most incompetent boneheaded choices imaginable.

I thought they'd fixed that design problem that caused it. The Elites aren't supposed to get it now, afaik.

But hey it's got Killzone 2! I mean the first game was so blindingly mediocre this ones gotta be great because it's using a new engine...Quite why they are hyping a sequel to a game that was so average at best after getting burned so badly for hyping up the original so much in the first place is beyond me.

Still nevermind, its all the 3rd party dev's fault!

Ok, who the hell gave Sony the idea? Serious Mr. Sony Executive Lurker, if you're going to steal our ideas, how about stealing some good ones. Like: "Make some decent games" and "Stop acting like twatwaffles in the press" and "Drop the price to something in the range of 'Affordable by mere mortals'."

So it's 60GB for $500 for as long as you can find it, and they aren't making anymore? That's such bullshit. Basically the price gets raised back up to $600 as soon as they sell out.

Yup. It's standard Sony. They announce a huge price drop during the press frenzy, then quietly announce that the version that's being dropped in price is going to be discontinued.

Since they announce that AFTER the press frenzy, not as many people hear about it.

Meanwhile, people who go to buy the new cheaper PS3 assume that the 60GB version is just being sold out everywhere, so hey, they might as well get the $600 80GB version cause hey, it's a little better and comes with a free shitty game.

    Cross posted.

    I'm Lazy right now, so:
They obviously want to move to a position where all new PS3's are Emotion Engine free. They have a load of 60GB models there with EE, and they want to push them out to make way for the new model. Even though the 80GB unit itself is cheaper to produce, they can't just sell it at the cheaper price because a load of 60GB will be left on the shelf. So they make the 80GB into a bundle, until all the 60GB's sell out then they sell the 80GB without the bundle at the new price point.

So yea, $499 is here to stay. I'm willing to bet there are enough EE+ PS3's out there to satisfy the immediate demand, then after that, 80 GB and no Motorstorm. Of course, I'm expecting an overreaction, because hey, internet.

    And MotorStorm isn't shitty.

can i get a link or something?

They were talking about it on the Xbox Warranty thread. Here on page 19

    A quick summary:
I dont think you understand what the RRD problem actually does.

It doesnt break the solder, it loosens it from the board, lifting it up as the mainboard warps under heat and breaks the connection.

When you apply the towel trick it warps the board again, thus raising the board up to the now loosened solder and reconnecting the electical signal. In effect, it bends the mainboard out so that the solder is stretched tight against the surface, thus reattaching it. The adhesive to connect the solder wasnt applied on non Elite 360s which is why it breaks, but it is on the Elites.

There is no melting of solder involved in any way at all. Therefore the heating up of the console using the towel trick is not, as many think, to melt the solder back onto the mainboard, it is to warp the board and melt the adhesive that attaches certain components to the mainboard so that previously split connections are now reattached.

Think of it like this. You stick a poster on a wall using blutack and it falls off after a while. what do you do? you roll the tack in your hands to warm it so that it becomes more sticky. you dont need to melt the poster back onto the wall for it to stick there.

The design of the 360 means when it gets warm, like all electronic devices, the mainboard warps slightly breaking electrical connections on the surface over time.

Like bending the end of a fork back and forth until it breaks.

To save money and try to make profit MS didnt add in an adhesive, which is now in the Elite model, which covers these joints meaning even when the board warps they stay firmly in place. Also, the cooling of the 360 is not so good, small ineffient fans and terrible heat sinks. Extras have been reported to be added in refurbed 360s.

    It is a design fault.

But after the last two years my faith in Sony doing something that makes sense has diminished to the point that it's pretty much non-existent.

Angel farts and diesel man. While you could believe that Sony is just waiting for all that old old worthless $500 stock to vanish before dropping the price again, that goes completely against their current corporate philosophy: Acting Batshit Insane.

    Hey, I get it.

For the record, I still think the price is too high to move in droves. Even at $449, you can stomach it, but you'll be gagging. $399 and they're attractive.

This guy is head of the Europe branch and he could be misinformed. The only reason I say that is the other article on that page where he says that the PS3 will be the clear winner in the next gen console race by March '08.

How does this relate to the supposed sham price drop? I think it may be because this guy is off his rocker.

We found out very early on, you know, consumers react mostly to just having one SKU as opposed to two.

Two sources from just about as high up as you go? CONFIRMED.

I think they'll have a rotating game as the pack in at this price, and even that won't help them.

Instead of a UK price drop they are getting motorstorm, resistance, and another controller. This is a pretty good deal, save for the fact that the system is hideously overpriced there.

This adds to the fact that even if you think that some of the fall/winter titles will move big numbers over here, none of those games will sell well at all in Japan. They are going to be in serious trouble unless they do something a bit more drastic than a temporary fire sale.

Wow, this is infuriating! Just when I was thinking about actually buying one of these things, Sony goes and reminds me that they're a bunch of dicks.

At the slightly-less-insane pricepoint of $499, I would have probably bought one once stuff I was interested in starts coming out (late this year, early next, I guess). But now? Will there even be a $499 model then? Or will it be stuck in a hardware rotation?

How about, you know, actually dropping the price for good, you fucks?
