edit: one of the things i like about GW is the fact that he is unflinchingly, uncompromisingly himself, no matter the situation, and he does what he feels is right.

I think the US could use a dose of libertarianism, but a small one.

Just enough to legalize all the things I like.

The principles look good on paper, but there's one serious flaw in the Libertarian ideals:

In reality, human beings will not gladly fork over their cash to anyone else without a good motive. Greed is the one overwhelming driving force behind human beings worldwide. Altruism is a fallacy.

This unfortunately destroys the welfare "concepts" of libertarianism.

In the words of R. A. H. - Taxes are not levied for the benefit of the taxed.

Ah, but even with worldwide domination, it still doesn't work. Humans have an innate moral sense, where fairness if part of that moral sense. We are acquisitive beings, and therefore, deep down inside, we believe that the amount a person deserves should correlate with what that person puts forward. There have been systematic studies demonstrating this. Many of them. And that is why communism fails. Thank you James Wilson.

Edit: I discussed this in a political behavior final. The prof actually wrote back that same day sort of patting me on the back for my argument/support of that argument. Yay

I didn't mean to come off in a lecture-y sort of way. I'm just a poly sci major, and I love talking about this stuff.

I think Heinlein kind of made the same point I made above in Starship Troopers, right? His evidence was more anecdotal than anything, though.
