I wonder if my highschool French teacher has seen it yet, and what she will think, or what she thought of the last few seasons. She has her doctorate in film studies, and at least when I was in her class, the only show other than news she watched was The Simpsons. Every Monday when I came to class it was " 'Allo Dayveed! Deed you watch ze Seempsons last night? Eet was so good!"

So tonight is the world premiere of The Simpsons Movie, as far as I know. I've seen the trailers, you've seen the trailers. To me, the whole situation seems rather dire. How about you? Cautious optimism, or violent disgust?

Also, why is McBain now Arnold?

I'm not really excited to see the film and I think the McBain/Arnold thing is probably what killed it for me. Made the film look stupid. Meh.

I thought the joke is that Arnie looks and speaks exactly the same like McBain, but they aren't actually the same characters

Some of the decisions they made were pretty lame (Colin, villain, bye Dr. Nick!) but on the whole it was great.
Revelation of Bart's wang was brilliant and completely destroyed the audience I was watching it with

He should have been the villain. An epic fight with Scorpio's army vs. the forces of Burns would be awesome.

If you weren't sure about seeing the movie - go ahead and watch it. I just came back from the second showing of the day (and meandered about the mall for a couple of hours), really happy to discover it was like the classic episodes. The characters were written really well, and I broke into peals of laughter more times than I care to count. SpiderPig wasn't even the highlight of the movie, like I had expected. Considering it was a movie, the writers were a bit bolder:
    - Bart's wang, obviously. That was gold.
-The two cops making out - a subject that was always 'veiled' in the show, more implied than really shown.
    - Homer flipping everyone off - not really shocking, just something you weren't expecting and something you wouldn't find on the show
    - That reindeer ripping Marge's dress off

So is the movie still all Family Guy-esque? As in they try to just throw in all stupid fucking random humor that isn't funny.

I haven't watched the Simpsons for years, because the new episodes are abortions. I might go see the movie sometime, or just wait for the DVD.

I've also always wondered, does Matt Groening see these new episodes and think, "Oh yes, this is amazing"?

The movie completely blew away my expectations. Based on recent episodes and the mostly lackluster trailer I wasn't too hopeful, but it was hilarious.

    Loved:
    Ralph: Oh no, blowback!

Official: Try to dump something into the lake.
Cletus: *Repeatedly walks into the 6-foot high concrete barrier, holding a dead possum* I'm unable to dump into the lake.
Official: Looks good enough for me.

I want 10,000 tough guys patrolling the border, and 10,000 soft guys to make the tough guys look tougher. I want them ordered tough, tough, soft, tough, soft, soft...
Sir, you've gone mad with power!
Sure I've gone mad with power! Ever try going mad without power? It's boring. No one listens to you.

Good stuff. Not superior to "golden age" material, but superior to the average episodes we get today. I felt a lot of the political stuff was lacking in subtlety, though.
The guy shouting "We actually found someone we're looking for!" was nonetheless pretty damn funny.

That scene fell kinda flat for me.
It would've sealed it if everyone else cheered. Maybe with a half muffled "FINALLY" from someone in the crowd.

ok - fuck you naysayers the first pages. Waaaah it will be bad waaaaah.

    Ugh.

I liked the movie a lot. The animation was stunning, and it had some great action sequences, sort of like futurama. The jokes were funny and I enjoyed the story.

    My golden moments:
I'd like a meat lover's pizza but... I LIKE meat. I don't know if I'm ready to love again.
The choral acapella version of Spider-Pig
Jumping the gorge and the busted ambulance
The entire bart nude skateboarding sequence, wang included.
The taped over wedding tape. It was actually a little bit touching.
"We need a new scissor lift! All in favor, aye!"
Flanders: Homer would do the same for - point taken.
    That fancy cup of cocoa.
    and some others.

Not going to bother spoiling it, because it's plastered in the trailers:

Did anyone have a hard time with Arnold as President? Not the "lol native-born" part, but the fact that it was basically McBain. I know, McBain was an Arnold parody, but the two really disassociated from each other over the years. McBain basically become a parody of all "action movie" actors. For me, anyways. It just seemed odd.

Just got back. Loved it. Only three real problems.
    1. The Lisa subplot was a complete waste of time.

    2. Some of the Alaska stuff drug a bit.

    3. Maggie used as a plot device and a deus ex machina

    Those aside, I adored it.

I was thinking that but then remembered that Maggie's first signs of violent behaivor were when she repeatedly clubbed Homer on the head. So in a way that scene was fitting.

I too was puzzled as to why they used Arnold instead of McBain. Pretty minor thing though.

I think they could have worked Scorpio in as the bad guy. They already used the same voice and mannerisms.

Anywhoo, overall it was waaaay better than I expected and very funny, especially the first 2/3 or so. Towards the end it got more actiony and less funny but still good.

So it's wrong to think it'll be bad based on the fact that the trailers are abhorrent and that the last many seasons have been comedic black holes? You can't be a sceptic, even if all the odds are against this movie?

    Okay.

You know, no one actually claimed to have seen it. It's not like anyone wants it to be bad. I hope I like it when I go see it.

Thought Ralph's reaction to seeing Bart naked was pretty funny.

Have to admit I would have preferred if some of the more popular secondary characters were a little more involved in the story.
