Wow, I was find it really strange when big serious news people say interent memes and phrases really seriously.

"lulz"

Though we all know 4chan is pretty bad, though this sheds more light on Anonymous' activities. Pretty tight how the woman had to get a dog, security system etc.

What are your views on 4chan? Or more specifically, their hacking, raiding etc.?

They're scum and they're eventually going to piss of the wrong person. Like when they pulled stunts by pissing off a load of skin heads, great idea guys :^:. Nothing could go wrong there.

Their link was broken (From the blog, not yours). So I found this...

This might just be the funniest thing I've seen in a while:

"Well stop the music... *and it does!* ...because its also redefining how vulnerable your children are to child molesters"

That was fantastic. Everything from asking the kids questions from downstairs, to presenting the good wifi signal as an even more sinister feature...

The internet is less like walking out into the street and more like sailing out into international waters in either the carribbean or southeast asia.

Hell, a recent story here in Canada involved people acting like douches through the near-complete lack of anonymity on FaceBook:
Last month, two young men thought it would be hilarious to create a Facebook group about an alleged drug-addicted street woman in Cambridge, Ont., whom they nicknamed "Obeeba."

Yesterday, in the latest incident of Facebook infamy, the group was removed after a renegade group formed less than a week ago complained to the site's administrators, local police and politicians.

"I hope we've made people more aware that you can't say things like that on the Internet and not expect there to be repercussions," said Rebecca Johnson, a 23-year-old Cambridge native and Facebook white knight of sorts, "because it's not as anonymous as it seems."

Justin Bernard and Cory Buckwell were the administrators for a group named "Obeeba Sightings," and they invited members to post photographs and video footage about the woman, who is black, and comment about her.

Derogatory messages came swiftly. Some group members called her sexually explicit and racist names. There were posts that called for her to be stuck in a garbage incinerator or run over by a car.

And then, about a week ago, came the Facebook community's renegades. Fed up by the lack of action taken by Facebook's administrators - the offensive group was in blatant violation of the site's terms of use - Ms. Johnson took action after a friend brought it to her attention.

She formed a group to counter the offensive one, which had grown to more than 700 members, calling it "The Obeeba Stalkers are Horrible People." Ms. Johnson's group had almost 300 members by last night's count.

Yesterday, the offensive group was taken down around 4:30 p.m., and a video of the woman was also removed from YouTube.

"We hope this person can get the help she needs because, from the description, she's obviously a very troubled woman," Ms. Johnson said.

Olaf Heinzel, spokesman for Waterloo Regional Police, said police were notified by local media yesterday about the offensive group and they intend to review the material and launch an investigation if necessary.

"I can't speak specifically to whether there is an investigation at the present time, but our officers are certainly aware of it," Mr. Heinzel said. "They are looking at that site. They are reviewing the material that's on that site and some of the comments that are made, and that's where it sits at the present time."

Ms. Johnson said her group members had contacted the police last week, but Mr. Heinzel said he was unaware of any complaints before yesterday. Mr. Heinzel said there's an onus on the administrators of social-networking sites like Facebook to ensure the terms of agreement are met and enforced.

"It's an opportunity for people to anonymously express themselves," he said. "We fundamentally believe the Internet and the World Wide Web are excellent communications tools. It's a great way to communicate globally with people, but unfortunately there are people out there who will also abuse that."

Facebook administrators did not return The Globe and Mail's telephone calls yesterday.

Alfred Hermida, a University of British Columbia professor of new media, said that instead of telling jokes in public spaces like a playground or bar, more people are telling jokes in cyberspace, within what they consider to be their inner circle of friends.

"The difference here, is that because it's on the Internet, the audience is anybody in the world at any time, not necessarily part of their group of friends," he said.

And when people write a comment down in cyberspace, Prof. Hermida said, they often don't think of the consequences.

"When people are leaving these comments, you have to question whether they were really being serious about this, or did they really intend to go out and do something? Or where they just letting off steam or thinking 'Well, this is going to amuse my friends.' "
