Introduction to Eve, discussion of the new Trinity graphics engine, and info on how to join the PA Eve Corporation (Merch Industrial) here.
Discussion for newbies on skills, fittings, and other basic game mechanics here.

Gentlemen, welcome to EVE Online.

EVE Online is an MMO set in the space region called New Eden, irrevocably separated from Earth after an incident involving the Eve Gate, the one connection between New Eden and Earth.

The game world spans hundreds of solar systems, divided into several regions of varying security level from 1.0 to 0.0 -- the former being highly patrolled by NPC police, the latter being lawless territory for the largest player corporations to war over. It would take several hours at best to travel from one side of the galaxy to another.

Not only is the game world vast in a spatial sense, but in a player sense. Eve Online is entirely unsharded -- every single player shares the same game world, with between 15,000 - 30,000 players online at any given time.

The mechanics of Eve, allowing player corporations to claim sovereignty over resource rich 0.0 space, has led to the emergence of player-created geopolitics that, for many, are far more interesting than the game content itself.

Space is divided into three general security levels on a scale from 1.0 to 0.0. 1.0 to 0.5 is considered high security Empire space, where players who commit aggressive acts against other players will swiftly and inevitably have their ships destroyed by the NPC police organization CONCORD. High security space is not a TOTAL guarantor of safety, but it's close.

0.4 to 0.1 is considered low security Empire space, where aggressive acts can take place without CONCORD retribution, but your personal security status will dive and automated turrets around stations and gates will open fire for a time.

0.0 is lawless space; there is absolutely no retribution for aggression, and most players consider it to be where the real meaty stuff takes place. It also has the best resources in terms of NPC bounties and asteroids to mine in the game. It's completely player-run. Players hold sovereignty over space, and players make the wars.

Here is the map as of 11/15/07, resized so as not to rape your H-scroll. I will be updating it and the rest of this OP periodically (every week or two).

influence.jpg

You can also find a larger version updated daily here, if you really need to actually read who those nebulous blobs of color represent.

POLITICS
I will attempt to keep this section as accurate as possible, but feel free to correct any inaccuracies about allies/hostilies and update me on even minor wars that are going on.

THE SOUTHEAST - 7-K to Paragon Soul
The RedSwarmFederation - Red Alliance (Russians), Goonswarm (Goons and other shitposters [it's us we're the other shitposters]), Tau Ceti Federation (French).

RSF Allies - Interstellar Alcohol Conglomerate (drunks), Against All Authorities (more Russians), United Legion (even more Russians), Knights of the Southerncross, VENOM Alliance, Black-Out, Ethereal Dawn, Intrepid Crossing (?).

Loosely tied to RSF or unaffiliated - Stain Empire (friendly only to AAA as far as I know, predominantly Russian?), Curatores Veritatis Alliance (very friendly with IAC, hostile to most others as they require people to operate NRDS in their space which few others will follow, Amarr RP alliance), Paxton Federation, Sylph Alliance (CVA allies), Kraftwerk (former D2).

THE SOUTHWEST - Period Basis to Fountain

The Greater BoB Community - Band of Brothers, Firmus Ixion, Mercenary Coalition. Non- (or minor) space claiming alliances include RISE, Executive Outcomes, Interstellar Starbase Syndicate, Red Moon Federation (?), STYX (?).

(As a note, I hate the generic terms "The Alliance" and "The Coalition," which is the only reason I'm calling them "GBC" here. I think it's a stupid name for a powerbloc but whatever.)

Unaffiliated - ev0ke and Outbreak (known as Krautbreak).

THE NORTHEAST - Cloud Ring to Deklein

Triumvirate. Others include The Reckoning., Scalar Federation, DeStInY, and Atrum Tempestas Foedus. I know some of those are Triumvirate-installed tenants, but I'm not sure which.

THE NORTHCENTRAL / NORTH DRONE REGIONS - Tribute and Branch to who knows what the fuck

The Old North - Razor Alliance and Morsus Mihi, with smaller allies and tenants including Combined Planetary Union, Phoenix Allliance, and Stella Polar.

As you move east, the friendly relationships start to weaken / blend a bit as far as I know. Hydra, Pure., Mostly Harmless, and Imperial Republic of the North are all either former Old North (MH, IRON) or long-time Old North allies (Hydra, Pure). They're also friendly to Roadkill / Smash though, who I'm not sure has much or any ties to Razor / Morsus Mihi.

THE DRONE REGIONS - who knows what the fuck to who knows what the fuck

Lots of people live here, including the aforementioned Roadkill and Smash, IRON, Mostly Harmless, Rule of Three, Dark Matter Coalition, Ka-Tet, Intrepid Crossing, Ethereal Dawn, Chaos Incarnate., Ultimata Rati0, Project Entropy, and Invictus. If any drone region dweller wants to sort out the politics of it, I'll update this section.

WARS

The long-running war of RSF / Old North versus the GBC, going on for nearly a year now, continues in full swing. As of this posting, little else seems to be going on elsewhere; the North seems largely pacified territorially, between RZR/MM/friends and Triumvirate/friends, and the drone regions war between Roadkill/SMASH and FREGE ended in FREGE's removal from the area. ev0ke and Outbreak were independently attacking Exuro Mortis and other BoB allies in Fountain, but I believe they've won and that's largely come to a close.

Major Events / News of the past months
- GBC allies take 25s and FAT from IAC in Catch, but lose an MC titan in doing so
- RSF allies take 2 RMF stations, 3 RISE stations, and 2 DFC stations in Feythabolis, but lose a Goonswarm mothership in doing so
- MC withdraws from Catch, stating their contract has come to a close; IAC/AAA/RA forces prevent the loss of F4R
- Having lost half of Feythabolis, BoB finds out about a planned RSF attack on multiple stations across Feyth, Esoteria, and Paragon Soul and choose to pull their tenants back to Fountain, Delve, and Period Basis
- RSF proceeds to consolidate the new territory
- Rumors abound that at least a few higher-ups in MC and FIX considered plans to turn on and attack BoB, although how widespread the discussion or anti-BoB sentiment is within those alliances is unknown

Go ahead and make poast. This thread not strictly war / politics, but should be considered more of an Eve General Bullshit thread -- possible mechanics / patch changes, inane tidbits about what you did in Eve today, discussion of how awesome Gallente are, they're all fine here.

Newbies or non-players who like chatting about the game's politics or general news should feel free to hop in, but please keep newbie questions related to joining Merch Industrial or newbie questions related to basic Eve information like skills/fittings questions to the threads linked at the top (which I hope vets will post in, to help the newbies out both in-game and here).

It's also not an RSF vs. BoB thread. Merch Industrial is part of Goonswarm (and thus the RSF), so naturally the information and discussion will tend that way, but honestly I'm always curious what the fuck is going on up north, in the drone regions, or in Providence and Catch. So if you're from there, fill us in, and I'll try to keep the OP updated.

On a different tangent, Gabe's newspost has generated some discussion today but I realized something rather interesting.
We were huge fans of the first Prince of Persia game so when Ubi came to us and wanted to run ads for the second we said yes. We had no idea they were going to completely fuck it over. So from then on we started demanding playable copies of games before we'd agree to advertising.

This is hugely fascinating as EVE has advertised several times on PA, including after the PoP2 fiasco (hell, Rev2 ads were running not a month ago but seem to be out of rotation now). Logically, this must mean that Gabe and/or Tycho have played EVE at some point in time and found it agreeable enough to allow to advertise.

    Also, factor in this:
Imagine what an open ended sandbox title must look like to a reviewer especially right now. How many games do they have piling up on their desks? A game like Assassins creed isn't meant to be played under a deadline. You shouldn't be trying to beat it as fast as you can so you can move on to Mass Effect or Mario Galaxy. As soon as I gave myself a deadline all of a sudden I understood all their complaints. It was like a fucking Escher painting. I had put myself in their shoes and suddenly the landscape flipped and I could see games from their perspective. In the end I wasn't angry at them for their bad reviews. I actually just felt bad for them.

Given this perspective I'm really curious now as to what Gabe and Tycho think of EVE, or if they are possibly even in Merch Industrial in a stealth capacity.

I've been sitting on this for a while now, but I figure this is as good a time as any to talk about it.

I've been having some connection issues with eve. I know disconnects are pretty much a fact of life when it comes to mmos, but I think this is something different. Basically, what happens is I get disconnected in stations. A lot. And this seems to happen whenever I'm in a station for more than a couple minutes. Now here's a really aggravating thing - I don't actually know I've been disconnected until I try to do something. It seems to continue as normal, except until it isn't.

I need solutions, guys. This is really starting to piss me off.

I totally resubbed and everything. First I stumbled over RoyofCA needing shield boosting help for an encounter which netted me a nice wad of cash (should I ever get the alloys moved to a refinery) then I went on a fleet op where I managed to load the system just after the battle finished. But it was fun anyway, kind of. "Could the 'I'm' on TS please shut up".

I'm Papa Ina by the way.

Oh and my work is buying me a laptop which it turns out has a DX10 graphics card. I doubt it'll be up to much by the time the DX10 client is released but at least I'll be able to enjoy the graphical update to a fairly nifty level

Was that the LJ- TCF pos defense? I couldn't lock anything there , which made being a tackler somewhat pointless. Given that other people appeared to be able to function semi-normally I really do wonder how eve time-slices information out to clients.

    Local was around 350 yes.

It's just very strange to me the variance of experience between the players. If everyone was 5-10 minutes activating a module then sure I would just write it off, but some seemed to be able to call and follow primaries when I couldn't even lock a target (generally because the first BS on the list that i would be trying to target was warped out or already dead I think looking back).

That said I'm just glad my rigged crow survived, not sure I'd risk 2 polycarbons in that kind of engagement again.

Yep, there's no real explanation for this. It wasn't crippling lag like F-T, 9-9, or 66-, as people did get shot, but it seems really fucking random on how people lock each other. Omeega was saying that he couldn't see any of MACTEP's primary calls but could see other ships.

Yup, I brought a scorpion, and somehow only attracted interest from one guy on the gate who was chewing me up with drones while I had him locked down with jamming (a TCF guy started helping me to kill him, so the drones barely got me into armor). By the time I started locking other things they were already dead, so I just started mopping up pods.

You can get some decent action from fountain pets around those times. Though you have to bring a small gang our you will scare everything other than the y-2 residents into a station. Around 10-25 is great.

My now self deleted posts essentially said, it was not a logon trap and a few other things. For those of you uninterested in the thread:

He was popped in a system with 2 gates less than 1au away. Since his scouts could not have missed us it must have been a logon trap.. except it was not. The team jumped in from another gate, landed on him and podded. He may have banned all the CVA accounts, who knows.

I understand of course ;) Can you tell me if Merch policy has changed for Providence? A number of us still vouch for and have <3 for you guys, even if you are stinky goons!

Our policy is still "If you shoot any non-pirate in Providence or Domain, we'll boot you from the corp and pod you until you lose the ability to fly a frigate"

I'm sure CVA will get a mention once the post is updated.
    Nope.
