So uh... I've been avoiding eve like the fucking plague for around 7 months. I just came to dislike how everything went down after ASCN fell. (my alliance.) I joined some smaller merc corp and that was all well and fun, but it just didn't have the same groove for me anymore. Now i'm somewhere in 0.0, with 3 T2 battleships in the station i'm in. So if I did play again id just be collecting the insurance on those and trying to get back to empire, then scoping out the alliance situation, then looking for a good pvp corp to join, and such a hassle.
Anyway, what has changed since 7 months ago? Is that great war still going on? Is BoB dead? (i doubt it). Has combat changed and are small fleets fun again, or does everything still get messed up by the almighty blob?

Really really brief version:
The Great War is still going on. Goonswarm, Red Alliance, Tau Ceti Federation, and other allies now control all of the old ASCN space. Mercenary Coalition has turned on BOB and along with a few other alliances, has seized control of Period Basis. BOB's holdings in Fountain and Querious have fallen, and they have already lost 1 station in Delve (a second station is all but captured, sov should flip in a few days).
Merch Industrial, the Penny-Arcade corporation who's recruitment thread you are in, joined the Goonswarm alliance about 5 months ago. We control the outpost in the E-PR0S solar system (right next door to the old ASCN capital).
Combat has changed quite a bit, but the almighty blob is still king for determining the outcome of strategic battles. However, there are plenty of other kinds of fights that don't involve such numbers. Sometimes it's a little hard to keep track of when exactly certain changes were implemented, but some relatively recent changes that you may or may not be aware of:
POS towers now have their offensive modules anchored outside of the shields where they can be disabled. Players can also take control of POS guns to concentrate their fire.
New ships have been introduced, Electronic Attack frigates that cost about 20m and have bonuses similar to recons (although no covops cloak).
Heavy Interdictors that project warp disrupt bubbles from themselves and/or warp disrupt super-capitals with a modified version of the module.
Two kinds of T2 battleships have been introduced, one is a super PVE boat (Marauder), and the other can jump bridge Recons and Covops (Black Ops).
Rorquals are capital industrial ships that have gang bonuses to mining, make decent jump haulers, and can compress raw ore for easier transport.
T2 Freighters with jump-drives.
Carriers now suck for hauling cargo but are actually good at transporting ships.
Scripting nerf for modules like RSDs, Sensor Boosters, etc. They can either affect range or targeting speed, or do both but rather poorly.
Lots of Sovereignty additions that include awesome toys like cyno generating arrays and jump bridges.
RSDs are currently nerfed, while ECM specific ships are actually powerful again.
A bunch of other balancing changes have occurred in the past 6 months, and more are in the works right now.

So far I'm enjoying the changes they've made playing a trial account, and will probably reactivate my old account on Monday. Not 100% sure if my old character will be viable (he still shows up on the in game character search, which was a surprise), but iirc he had most skills trained up, but I think I quit around the time tech2 came out, and gave away most of my shit (including somewhere around 200 million ISK).

Eve was ... different. People would load torps onto Kestrals fly up your tailpipe and blow ya up in .5-1.0 space while a buddy would fly in and collect your stuff, guys would come in and steal your ore from your can and there was nothing you could do about it, and pvp was a gate gank fest. If you had 100-200mil isk you weren't rich, but you were definitely upper class, and agents really sucked. I left right around the time they fixed most of that. lol Not because I was doing much besides mining and manufacturing for my corp, but my friends were getting into EQ2, and I thought it sounded like fun... ugh.

Haven't you noticed you can warp to 0km from objects in space? Of course you have, but that's what we're talking about. Used to be a minimum of like 10km, which gave people at LEAST 5 seconds to fuck with you, and that's if you're in a tricked out mwd equipped kestrel. This warp to 0 jazz is awesome.
