Askin' Questions, Gettin' Answers: The Thread For General Comic Book Questions
Hey folks, in this thread you ask general comic questions that don't merit a thread of their own. Like, "when was the last time Spider-Man had a bath in a comic"
Why in the hell would Marvel (quesada, I am guessing) had something like Ultimatum to Loeb, who has not even completed his first Ultimate story?
I think he's completed Ultimates 3 and 4 and they were just waiting on Ultimates 2 to end and for the artists to finish up.
Not saying he should be writing Ultimatum but
I find it funny and terrible that there is another volume of this already written that is going to come out no matter how badly volume is received. I can understand Marvel not wanting to massive delays on one of their flagships again, but would it not make more sense to get one volume done, release it and then see how it received before commissioning or whatever the next volume?
In less words, Ultimates 3 is so bad I would sooner step on dogshit than put the issue down over it and step on the issue, and there is an entire volume waiting to be dumped upon us like a deep bucket full of vomit, offal and rotted sheep placenta.
I mean why not get one of the volumes complete, fling .... er release it that on the unsuspecting public first. See how it released. Then if it things turn out well, sign Loeb to exclusive and have him write the next one.

Jesus, it was only one issue. Shut up already.
In unrelated news, I just finished the first three trades of The Exterminators and it's pretty fucking rad. This leads me to the following questions:
- When is the next trade out
- How much of the comic is only available in singles? I think the 3rd trade only goes up to #16...
- Does it stay this awesome, because I may have to switch to following it in singles, expense be damned!
Hey when do comics ship this week? I thought it was today but normally I get an email from my shop telling me books are gonna be late and I never got one.
Do all X-Men get bullet-proof Unstable Molecules-based costumes or do only ones who need them for current plot purposes wear them? I ask this because the New X-Men JUST NOW got bullet-proof costumes after about 60-70 of them got killed and because Professor X used to talk about getting unstable molecules costumes from Reed.

I would assume that they had bullet-proof costumes in the past, but now everyone uses the weapons Cable and Bishop did in the 90s.
I thought they scrapped Ultimates 4 and put McGuiness on the Red Hulk to actually make use of the whole exclusive thing they had him on. Ultimates 4 then became Ultimatum and the other nonsense. I'm probably wrong on this, but it sounds right to me for some reason.
edit: And comics are shipping on Friday this week because Diamond needs a 2 day holiday for New Years.
I am pretty sure Ultimatum is something completley different than Ultimates 4, since it ties into the whole Ultimate Origins thing and they have been talking about an upcoming Ultimate event since even before they were talking about Ultimates 4.
Speaking of New X-Men, is it confirmed that it's been cancelled? A guy at my local comic shop said it was, and it looked like some of the characters were moving to Uncanny, but I haven't seen anything to back this up.
Well considering that there hasn't been a single issue of it solicited post Messiah Complex and the writers of New X-Men are writing the new X-Force series
I think it's safe to say New X-Men is over.
There are rumours of some kind of "Young X-Men" book or something coming down the pipeline though.
The next issue of Nightwing (140 I think) is the debut of a new writer, Peter Tomasi, new artist, Rags Morales, and a cool new direction for the series focusing on how integral Nightwing is to the DCU.

Fantastic. I love Nightwing, I always picked up random issues and never really had a clue what was going on. Any others on the more obscure side of DC?
Suggest some ongoing DC comics that wouldn't be hard to jump into for me.
Paul Dini's Detective Comics is great, but unfortunatley there seem to be frequent fill-in arcs from other writers.
Green Lantern is probably the best book DC has at the moment, you should go back and read the Sinestro Corps War since it's arguably the best event of the last few years and will set up everything you need to know about the GL ongoing for the next couple years.
JSA is super awesome but will probably be tying into Countdown soon so I dunno about that.
Can't think of much else off the top of my head, Teen Titans and Birds of Prey (which used to be two of my faves) just recently changed creative teams so I cant reccomend them.
Simone's Wonder Woman looks like a lot of fun but it's only 1 issue in so far.
I recently trimmed down my DC pull list quite a bit thanks to Countdown.
besides the entire series of mary jane <3s spider-man?
she was in a really good valentine's day comic last year where peter gave her his old web shooters so she could play practical jokes on the human torch along with her husband.

The correct answer is Blue Beetle. Early issues are good, but when Rogers takes over as the sole writer, it really takes off and is somethign I'd call the equivilent of DCs Spider-Man and not the retarded Spider totem / OMD crap that's going on right now, but the classic "everything that made Spidey great" stuff.
Checkmate is good as well, but pretty damn hard to get into unless you go back to the start.
Catwoman has been incredible ever since Brubaker restarted that series, but, sadly, it looks like editorial mandate of having her in Salvation Run will more than likely kill any enjoyment I have left for the book.
If you know anything about 52, and even if you dont, Booster Gold is a great series that's about 5 issues in. One of the funniest comics I've ever read.
While Sinestro Corps War was awesome, you'll never be able to get all the issues, so I'd just grab the trade whenever it comes out (Feb I think). So, while picking up Green Lantern seems like a no brainer, it would actually be pretty difficult to get into if you're coming in fresh. Worth the effort to try though as it's great.

The Sensational Spider-Man annual was pretty awesome also. It centered on a guy she knew when she was living in Hollywood trying to convince her to turn Pete in while one of Pete's friends is trying to convince him not to turn himself in to spare Mary Jane and Aunt May.
Matt Fraction wrote it, and he definitely seems to have a real good grasp on Spider-Man. I really hope he gets a good long run on a Spidey title at some point.

So back before all this OMD crap I was looking at getting back into Spider-Man. I read it back in the mid-nineties, during the part of the clone saga that was actually good, before getting irritated and dropping it - starting just after ASM 400 and ending around the point that Peter handed his costume over to Ben. Back then it seemed like there were about half a dozen books in what a little research has determined was the "616" continuity, all of which crossed over. At the time I was basically picking up whatever I could at the supermarket, since I couldn't drive and the next-nearest comic shop was like 10 miles away in a seedy part of town, and I remember being irritated that the crossovers between all these different books made it both a pain in the ass and pretty expensive (for a 11-13 year old) to keep up.
Is this still prevalent, aside from special runs or one-shots? Looking at Marvel's website it seems that the only 616 spider-book is ASM, but it's hard to believe that they slashed five lines.
Moreover, given that I want to avoid the current stupidity in the 616 Spidey continuity, what's a decent book for someone just getting back into it? Pick up Ultimate trades or Spider-Girl or something?
Yes, ASM is the only 616 Spidey book, but as of January it ships 3x a month.
Ultimate Spider-Man is the best take of the character I've ever read so thats the best place to go for awesome Spidey stories.
As for the crossover thing, it's nowhere near as prevalent now as it was in the 90s. Most "events" now get told in thier own seperate mini series which the ongoing titles tie into in someway, but the main story is all in the same place.
Thats not to say it never happens, Sinestro Corps War was told across both Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps and the current Messiah Complex story is crossing across all 4 X-titles, but those are both huge stories that have been in the works for awhile.
So what's the current word on the passage of time in the 616 universe. Like say from when the Fantastic Four's shuttle crashed until when Tony Stark woke up this morning. I'm going to take a guess at 16 years but I do remember in The Thing comic by Dan Slott someone saying it had been 13 years since the shuttle crash. What does anyone else have to say?
However old Peter is minus however old he was when he was in high school is the best answer you can expect to get. it's the only instance of time passing that they cannot revoke.

What's the longest story Mary Jane Watson got?
mr. sinister came from circumstances and is now a total douche

Anally.
I think they are labeled as seperate because A. pretty sure Ultimates 4 has someone else on art and
B. they are going to be bridged by Ultimatum
Wow, that's almost as good as the time my drama teacher in high school re-enacted the entire (original) Star Wars trilogy in 4 minutes.
I should have a column where all I do is explain complex comic stories in a paragraph or less. Like the opposite of the life of Reilly.
Please do!
Speaking of which, it took me months (with long gaps in between), but I enjoyed reading the entire Life of Reilly.
So lengthy explinations work as well.

I got the trade for Christmas and it was simply wonderful.

hah, i gave that trade for christmas, and it is excellent.

It was ugly and boring.

I don't know what kept me from this book for so long, but I bought the hardcover and oh man
