I see your movie and raise you: Hugh Laurie as Gordon Freemon, Damien Lewis as Barney Calhoun, Morgan Freeman as Eli Vance, and Sean Connery as Wallace Breen. With Rick Moranis as Isaac Kleiner.

Sounds interesting.. I might read up some more about that. I like the idea of giving the player a minimal briefing as to why they're there in the first place, and letting them attach their own meaning to it, like asking whose house it actually is, why they're here exploring it, and uncovering the story through their exploration.

That sounds kind of like Yahtzee's game 5 Days A Stranger. And there is in fact a mod team Sourceing that.

Seriously though, is there anyone here who wants to team up with a brother and make a mod of some description? I can do the maps, textures and basic props, and also any in-hammer scripting naturally.

Maybe I should make a thread for the concept. I think it would be cool to have some kind of a G&T mod whereby any foo' could jump in and help out or post their ideas.

OHOHOH I HAV LOTS OF IDEAS THAR SHOULD BE A ROCKET GERBIL

But that aside, those map shots still impress. How many hours have you put into those?

And on a vaguely related subject, anyone remember the ancient interview hinting that someday Steam would/could act as a sort of filesharing service, and they used mappacks as an example? That totally needs to happen, if only to make browsing custom MP maps less of a hassle.

Once upon a time when Opposing Force was still in development, a bunch of Half-Life fanboys hung out on the Sierra Op4 forum (especially since the developers posted there from time to time.) Eventually we brewed up an idea for a mod based on the Chumtoad critter that got cut out of the original Half-Life. It was basically kill the man with the skull from Marathon (and I guess Halo has it now too) but with the Chumtoad. The plan was to have the Chumtoad glow purple and chirp alot so it'd give away your position. We were going with the "you can't use any weapons while you have the toad" version. And that was pretty much it. Holding onto the toad gets the most points, guy with the most points wins.

We got fairly close to finishing (which is kind of sad considering how simple the mod was.) The biggest hurdle that we failed to overcome was the lack of someone to model. We had a programmer and I was doing sound effects and the website (I made some neat alien frog noises).. I forget what else we had done but there was more than two people on the team. It's pretty funny though, the main thing that prevented us from releasing it was the fact we had no one to do the simple task of converting the old version of the "in hand" chumtoad model to the current HL engine and then reskin it so the HEV arms were orange instead of red.

Ah well. We're a statistic now.

So my PC should be fully updated within the week, and I'm considering purchasing the Orange Box for PC (already have it for 360). The reason? Mods, and lots of them. Only problem is I've never modded a PC game before, but I've seen some very impressive screens and videos.

I wanted to make a seperate thread, but I wasn't sure where it would be most appropriate, so I'll just ask here. What are the best of the best HL2 mods I should look into? Multiplayer is fine, but I'm mainly interested in single player mods that pretty much change the game, offering a near limitless amount of free games with the Source engine.

The vortigaunt was my favorite companion in any shooter ever, I believe. That guy was awesome. Great lines + awesome voice acting + solves all the puzzles for me + wisecracking + kicks butt. I never worried about him dying, and I only kept him in sight to watch all the awesome stuff he does.
What was that one line? "No pit would be complete without a Freeman coming out of it" or something? That combined with how he sticks his head out right when you're coming up was awesome.

Fixed. I think. Either that or 'emerging from'. Love my vorti-buddy. Alyx's pitiful attempts at humour just do not compare.

Also 'I think you will be very pleased that you rescued those crates'. It's all just so inappropriate.

Especially compared to the drivel that one vortigaunt spews when you first get the airboat in the original HL2. I sat and talked to him for ages with those two humans nagging me to get a move on in the background. Interesting guy, but a lot more serious.

Definitely reminded me of the Vorti who teaches you how to use the bugbait.
"Truly, the Freeman excels at all things."

    'Good luck Gordon!'
    'Be...acceptable!'
'What the hell is that supposed to mean?'
'I dunno, it sounds like the sort of thing a Vortigaunt would say'

Great. Now I'm back alone with 'wahwah I'm a humorless girl' Alyx. Still, at least I have a broom broom. Speaking of which, these seesaw puzzles are just getting ridiculous. Surely a physics engine must facilitate a wider variety of puzzles than putting heavy objects either end of a fulcrum or pully in progressively larger scales? By the end of Episode 3 we're going to be shoving planets to one end of the universe to seesaw time and space on the axis of the sun, catapulting us through a temporal vortex to the combine's home world.

Great. Now I'm back alone with 'wahwah I'm a humorless girl' Alyx.

What do you mean humourless? She cracks a joke, albeit a terrible one, in Episode 1, tries to lighten the mood via quips throughout Half-Life 2 and the Episodes, and generally maintains an aura of enthusiasm surprising given her circumstances. If you've got a sequence in mind that ground your gears, by all means share it with us, because I can't think of any such sequence.
