I think murmurings still have this pegged for an early Q1 release on Live Arcade, so it could come at any point -- and the buzz is that it could come as early as this month. Lord knows I'm in desperate need of this game, easily my favorite PS2 game to date. Back to front it'll only take you about an hour or so, but damn is it a fuckin' great hour. This wiil be the game that gets me to really set up my surround sound system, too.
If you're not familiar with Rez or actually played it, it's kind of hard to pull what makes the game interesting in the first place just from videos. It's a PS2 on-rails shooter like Panzer Dragoon Orta, and you have to shoot down enemies and various projectiles being tossed at you. The hook is that everything you do -- from lock-ons to firing to using smart bombs -- has its own aural note and is quantized to lock into the stage's backbeat. You craft the game's soundtrack just by playing, and the force feedback thumps in your hands as you hear and see all sorts of crazy shit unfolding from your play.
Half of all gamers thinks it's pretentious bullshit but the other half thinks it's the most immersive performance art–meets–otherworldly experience game of all time. I'm in the latter camp (along with Gabe, now that I think about it). The impending XBLA release looks like it keeps everything intact but upgrades it to 720p and adds in 5.1 surround sound, which given the game's emphasis on audio is really more compelling than any sort of resolution bump, IMO.
I can only see bad things coming from what I'm about to say, but bear with me. I really want to try this, because I hear so many good things about it and never played the original, but I also heard a whole lot of hype about Space Giraffe for being some kind of audio/visual orgasm, and found that to be a migraine-inducing brainrape of a mess. I'm not saying they're the same game, it sounds like there's quite a difference between them, but I'm going to have to find out first-hand if this is actually something I can get into.
I've played both this and space giraffe, and whereas space giraffe is a painful mess of bright colors, Rez's art style is much less noisy; you can probably youtube the first level or so to get a better idea, although its mono sound will probably lessen it.
But Rez is ultimately is about the music...the track to the last level is still in my regular rotation today.

I bought E4 via Live. Which I like a fair amount. Sounds like I'll probably end up getting this as I owned and liked Panzer Dragoon Orta. So, if its like E4 + PDO then I'm totally gonna book a ticket on the Rez express.
If this is the game MS gives out for all the Live troubles, I will... be very happy, to say the least.
The only problem is that the people most demanding compensation are the FPS obsessed kiddies, and giving this to them would be like laying pearls before swine.

The difference is that Space Giraffe is a very difficult game where you have to use the visuals & audio to their fullest if you even hope to stand a chance at not dying a miserable horrible death. The presentation of the game is meant to increase the difficulty. On the other hand, from what I've heard, Rez is a relatively easy game where the audio and visuals are meant to make the game more fun and immersive.
EDIT: Seeing as how this is the biggest upcoming XBLA game at the moment, one that they could charge $15 for and still have takers, I seriously doubt that Microsoft would give this away as the free game.
We've received an email from Q Entertainment today who has informed us that Rez HD is "only a few weeks away" from release on the Xbox Live Arcade.
The other good news is the fact that the game will be available for only 800 Microsoft points. "Only a few weeks away" could mean that Rez HD will be available in a fortnight, we'll keep you updated as soon as Q Entertainment lets us know more.
Rez HD isn't just a HD upgrade of the original Rez, the game includes new sound and visual effects, some of the new sounds include cave, forest, underwater, hall and plate and some of the new visual effects include sepia, tile, blur, bloom and glare. The game will include a full suite of leaderboards and there will be an option for all controllers to receive vibration from the game, so not just the player will feel the vibration.
Oh man, I can't wait. I've all but worn out my Rez PS2 disc out from playing it so much. It's a shame I don't have a fancy sound system, but I'll live. Any idea how much this will cost?

Rez is really the only game that needs to come to the Wii, its not like the Wii is underpowered to play Rez and since Rez is a point and click game, Rez could fit perfectly with the Wii mote.
As for the person asking about the PS3, till the Dualshock 3's are common place then it probably wouldn't fit too well (As I hear it, feedback is quite a big part...I've to my shame never played this game)

I had high hopes for Space Giraffe, but while they're loosely similar SG is kind of like the obnoxious, unruly, ADHD younger brother to Rez's hot, laid-back older sister. SG's entire shtick is discord, to have all of these jarring effects and blinding visuals disorienting you. With Rez it's the entire opposite -- it's about harmony. Everything clicks together perfectly and in sync, and while there's a lot of stuff happening around you it occurs in natural cycles (waves of enemies in 2, 4, 6 or 8, patterened to the backbeat). You'll never skip a beat, and you'll never not understand what's going on -- because each action has an audio, visual and tactile (force feedback) cue, you have a bunch of different ways to understand what's going on. Eventually you'll get so into it that you're hearing sights and feeling sounds, which is kind of the point as the game is built around the concept of synesthesia.
It's technically a shooter but the game's more about building than it is about destroying, if that makes any sense. Each level builds slowly from start to finish, and as more enemies soar at you the act of playing adds all the sound effect to make the music more frantic.
I wonder how they're going to demo the game, since it's so short. Maybe just the first half of the first level? But even then, you're not getting the full build of the level -- it'd be like playing the first half of a song, no resolution. In either case, whatever demo is out, everyone with a 360 within reach needs to play this game. To have this cult classic -- which goes for $40+ regularly on DC or PS2 -- at 10 bucks is a frigging steal.
There's been no mention of a PSN release but I'd never say never.
If it ever does come out for PSN -- and I hope it does, as everyone deserves to play this game -- it needs to wait until the rumble controllers are widespread enough for it to make sense. This is the only game I can recall that pretty much mandates force feedback, or at least would lose a major portion of its effect without it.
Is it too soon to be calling this 2008 game of the year? God I fucking love me some Rez. That was probably the best description I have read of the game Lunker. However even that falls short of actually playing the game. It is beautiful.

Thanks! I'm unashamedly smitten by the game -- I wrote a short essay on the game's emotional impact for Platformers.net last year, and I gush about it whenever it comes up. It's really difficult to explain the game and a lot easier to just let people play it. It's not for everyone -- I had a friend play the first level and call it "the gayest thing I've ever seen" -- but a lot of people who don't like games thought it was awesome. But to hear, see and feel the game in a dark room with headphones on is total nirvana. I can't wait to see this in its full glory with my sound system cranked.
The closest analog I can think of in recent memory is Electroplankton, but that's just kind of the "tinkering around with sounds" part, so Rez is more complete in that it actually uses that to paint an entire game with risk and conflict, although it's not a terribly difficult game on the default settings. Still, such a beautiful game.
My girlfriend will be very happy to hear about the additional controllers subbing for the trance vibrator. Now to find a velvet sock to put a controller in...
You people are making me want to play this, now. I know how it'll go, too.
darleysam's brother: What's that?
darleysam: it's Rez
darleysam's brother: looks gay
darleysam: you look gay
darleysam's brother: so.. what's going on?
darleysam: well I seem to be shooting things, and there's.. like, sound and colours. It's good fun.
darleysam's brother: you're good fun.
darleysam: stop that.
darleysam's brother: I don't think it's for me. Play Halo instead.

darleysam's brother: can we buy Rez? I've been playing the demo all day.

Dunno about that, but I know you can plug in a second controller and toggle an option to use controller 2 as a trance vibrator.

Looks like Tron on crack.

Will be buying this for sure, even though I still have a working Dreamcast copy.

I was going to mention that too. Rez will always be a Dreamcast game to me.

After reading this, I went straight for my dreamcast and blew through all 5 of the normal stages. I can't wait for Rez HD to come out.

Sorry! I always forget, though arguably the DC version runs better/differently, doesn't it?
