Dawn Of War 2 CONFIRMED

*Now with fixed link goodness! Sorry I was away from my computer all weekend =(

This just in! http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=264868
Uses the Essence 2.0 engine with Havok physics, all optimised for DX10 and multicore support.
- It looks great, think of the DoW intro but with a bit less polygons here and there (in terms of lighting and all that it looks almost exactly the same).
- Units also use CoH-like unit AI for awareness and pathfinding to find cover and such.
- While DoW 2 shares the same (upgraded probably) engine as CoH[ it won't be "CoH in space",/B] while soldiers in CoH will ask themselves if flanking the enemy is the right option, in DoW2 it will be more like Space Marines asking themselves if they should use their jetpacks to jump over an Ork squad to attack them in the back. Different settings, different kinds of warfare.
- Preview only showed a destroyed city landscape, akin to DoW (but more detailed), other tilesets will offer deserts, jungles, mountains and other cities.
- Only the Orkz and Space Marines were revealed, more races on the way obviously and to be to revealed later this year (though how many isn't known).
- Co-op campaign for both the Orkz and Space Marines, apparently not for the other to-be-revealed races.
- More focus on making units and squads unique; every unit has got a name (at least in the campaign it seems), more details and more animations.
- Relic wants to give players rewards at the end of a mission like wargear (armor, weapons, rare objects); "Let's pimp out squads with cool stuff!", you will see these items in-game as well of course.
- You'll fight your way through the campaign with the same squads.
- You can't control more than six squads! I am not sure if this is campaign-only but the preview made it sound like it wasn't.
- The squads are going to be a lot more interesting than before though.
- A squad leader (one or several?) will need to survive if you want to complete a mission; you really have to look out for your squads and don't treat them like cannon fodder.
- There is a lot more interesting commentary from the units as well; if your SM commander is holding a Thunder Hammer f.e. then the opponent will specifically comment on that, Ork Warchief saying something like "Ooh, nice hammer, but mine is bigger!". The warchief will say something else if the commander doesn't have the hammer.
- The campaign lets Space Marines operate from a spaceship, you'll get a view of an underlying planet and you'll be able to choose from different missions (which are tagged with difficulty colours, green, blue and red).
- Certain reward items won't be useable at once in the campaign, so they'll be taken back to the SM spaceship for research.
- Dreadnought can now also trample Orkz.
- No sea or air units (though jetpacks are still in of course).
- Development team of 55 people has been working on it since September 2006.
- Release in early 2009 or later.

    FOR TAU WE FIGHT!

I'm sad because my bet is Tau wont make it in retail release.

Edit: Forgive me, its late, no clue why i worded it like that, alas though, my bet is that Tau wont make it in the "vanilla" version of this particular sequel.

I'd love to see the first four (not that we know how many races to expect) be Marines, Orks, Tau and 'Nids. More variation in different Marine chapters would be nice, though. I still think it would have been neat to keep it as Marines vs Chaos and just flesh out the main Chapters/Legions fully. Include Heresey era as an option and I'm happy.

Oh, and jetpacks? Jump packs. Come on.

I am not certain here, of course. It was just a reaction to the fact that, apparently, you aren't allowed to treat your squads as cannon fodder. And since treating your squads as cannon fodder is what the Imperial Guard is all about, I thought it was an appropriate flying leap to a conclusion. :P

Not so sure I like this. Maybe a 'squad' can break up into smaller parts or something. I want hordes.

Then again, in CoH I guess fielding ~6 squads (not including vehicles) is pretty hectic and rewarding. I just really hope they put a 'retreat' feature in maybe when morale is broken or something, instead of dudes poping out of no-where. Someone actually had a pretty good idea in a thread we had earlier, I think he suggested having a timer for when you could call down mans with like a drop pod or something...

Bollocks to that I say. Ork squads are the very definition of cannon fodder. That's why you take so many.

Well if you have like 100 individual orkz in the squad then you have your fodder, you just gotta make sure that the last guy makes it out (and brings back teef to trade stuff for).

I realise they probably aren't going to change up the way the game works too much. But after playing WiC I would love to see DoW2 take the in-depth small scale squad based combat of CoH (which it will for the most part), ditch the base building/resource gathering and take the large scale yet small unit number team based multiplayer of WiC to make an in-depth WiC/DoW/CoH hybrid. It would be the ultimate rts for me, but I think it will most likely remain a dream.

So before anyone goes off about doctrines for some ghastly reason, in the Pancake made a good post in the soulstorm thread about a better way to change up the armies and it's a lot better than stupid doctrines for 9 armies.

Yeah it was great, and I've always wanted a 40k themed version. Not sure what it has to do with anything though. I just want a World in Conflict/DoW hybrid. No bases, large team based gameplay. With the awesome squads and micromanagement of CoH/DoW.

Oh thank god, those are some satisfyingly hulking Space Marines.

And some of them have Mark VI beaky helmets.

Tyranids and Imperial Guard (Death Korps of Krieg-style perhaps?) would be nice additonal races, but for the moment I'm just glad it's got such a good visual look to it. The carnage.

I am willing to bet that Tyranids will be playable, and in the core game, not an expansion. I have no idea how their campaigns would work though. I mean, the Necrons might not be chatty bitches but there was dialogue when you played as them and there is a sentience behind the army as a whole. Even the Zerg, which spoke only in squishy flesh sounds, had Cerebrates and Kerrigan to speak for them.

Perhaps the hivemind will communicate, much like the overmind did in Starcraft.

Also, there really was hardly any dialogue from the necrons. The only one I can remember is from their stronghold when a Pariah started talking out of nowhere. Otherwise they're completely silent. I'm sure they'll figure out a way for the nids as well

Do you really need a 'story' for the Tryanids? Really?! Have their campaign map show a representation of how much biomass is in that particular area, that's all the motivation they need.

I thought the same thing haha. Hey sharp I'm heading to the GW at EC this weekend for the first time. Going on a shopping spree!

I was so frustrated this morning when I couldn't log on due to a forum bug, when I REALLY wanted to add my own 'woot!' to this thread!

I wonder if they're going to go for a single player campaign like Vanilla DOW or give it the DC/SS treatment.

If they go the campaign route, do you think the player will assume the role of the Space marines for the entire campaign, or will there be multiple campaigns, like in winter assault? Ah so many questions, can't wait for 2009! might need to save up and get a shiny new computer!
