Ok, new OP time!
So, there still isn't much new information about this WH40k MMORPG. The newest PC Gamer did run this article...
As the fantasy Warhammer MMORPG nears completion, the first news breaks on it's sci-fi cousin. So far we have just the bare facts. The barest of which is, it will be an MMORPG, rather than an MMOFPS as some had hoped.
The combat system will be orientated around cover, suppresive fire and flanking, and firefights will take place on a larger scale than those planned for Warhammer : Age of Reckoning. "The term 'Battleground' takes on an entirely different meaning," Vigil Games General Manager David Adams says, slyly implying they plan to outdo World of Warcraft's largest PvP arenas. Players can (but don't have to) form squads, the basic infantry fighting unit of the tabletop game.
Creative Director Joe Madureira claims that "All of the races important to Warhammer 40,000 lore (not fans) will be represented". Thats extremely encouraging, considering how well loved the oft-omitted Tyranids are by Warhammer fans. "We want each and every race to have weight in the game world," he continues, "and feel distinct."
Players will get to explore alien cities, alien temples, Chaos shrines, deserted battlefields (er. woo?), mysterious ruins, ancient structures, here's the cools one " drifting hulks in space". Space hulks we call those. When it comes to our own character, Vigil are particularly confident - cocky, even. Joe promises "Tons of stuff hanging off your character, weapons, scrolls... we are going to have the coolest looking characters of any MMO, ever. Once we begin releasing images, feel free to call me on that." Don't worry, we will.
So, there's a little info. You want links too? THQ telling us things we don't really want to hear...
Wow has peaked, WH40k mmo years away
So, we have no screens, little info, and a very long, looming release date. What's the point of this thread?

Not exactly much of an update. The game is definitely still quite early in the planning stages, as we've yet to even hear what sort of MMO it is or what's even the focus. They probably haven't even decided on it themselves.
I'm quickly becoming a 40k whore and salivate over the idea of a 40k MMO. Personally I hope they don't do a media blast until a year from launch because I don't want to be cock teased around like I have been with WAR.
Have we even heard what type of MMO this will be for sure? Some people were talking Planetside style FPS but I don't remember hearing official word from the devs. Personally I'd like a fast paced, squad based MMO. I mean 40k battles are suppose to be enormous so it would be nice to represent that by giving you squad members to run around with. Gods & Heroes, which never got released because (it sounds like) the head of the company was up to no good) had squads which increased in size as you leveled up. Combine that with Tabula Rasa style combat and I will buy a lifetime subscription.
Q! (click....) NPC: FEAST!!!
Options to click on text box = FEAST!!! or FEAST!!!
That's what I've ALWAYS wanted in an MMO. A squad based one. It could be DOW-like except with only 1 squad you upgrade and outfit and such.
This idea makes me both want to hug you and tear you in half with a chainsword out of love.
Or maybe tear you in half and then hug you. The pieces, separately.
Republic Commando in MMO form?
You know you want it.
Planetside style gameplay, but possibly with huge point based instanced battles either as the main gameplay or a strong option.
Then *really* different classes for the game.
A space marine is the standard single character hero.
But Imperial guard is a whole squad of guys centered on the seargent OP flashpoint style.
Vehicle class which can either pilot some vehicles alone or join up with others for the bigger things.
Then add stuff like buffs if you manage to stay in formation during the game. Space marines should stay in their squads (with other players), IG in their platoons and vehicles in their companies.
It could be awsome.
Also, instant respawn

I would buy you a beer just for having typed that. A simulated battlefield with people running around as squads, vehicles and individual units would be awesome. That's a marvelous way to balance the gulf in power between the different tabletop critters.
What do you say to that? Really?
"Bolters are overpowered!"
There are alot of people out there who want a good scifi mmo, and it really hasn't been delivered on yet.
Playing as a sergeant in the IG with a squad of guardsmen would be awesome. you could do the same with 'nids. How would you do orks, though?
I really hope that when it does come out and I'm 40, they'll have all the sides, not just marines, chaos, eldar, and orks.
That sort of gig would really encourage customization, decide you want a single guy that night or if you want your old starting squad back, whatever you'd like. Can you imagine how crazy they could go with loot in that case? Every player with a stable of units that they'll want to outfit and play with in different ways. Uniforms, matching guns, specialty load outs ahoy.
Pipe dream, perhaps.
But orks doesn't have to work that way. You could have a system where you instead get to spend points in 3 different areas which then together decide how your character works.
Size: Your ork gets bigger and tougher!
Waagh!: Your ork gets more or tougher boys!
Speciul: Your ork gets strange powers! (mechboy abilities, paindoc abilities etc).
You want a huge mob of boys? Invest all your points into Waagh! You want feral orks? Don't bother to get the shoota update.
You want a group of nobs? Invest in Size and Waagh.
You want a big mech? Invest in Speciul and Waagh.
Etc. I also think ork mechboy abilties should be a randomized bit(s) every day based on the ammount of points you have in it. Then you have to save up or trade for the rigth kind of bits to make awsome things.
The same reason it took 20 years to release a tabletop 40k RPG, rather than wargame, while Warhammer had one in the mid/late 80's.
40k is too epic for its own good; makes it tough to have a game where players focus on one, supposedly not-expendable, character.
There's still no real good way around this, other that having all players character-level members of a single race. Which is why I worry about the integrity of a 40k MMO. Would everyone want to play what is, essentially, a pet class?

Ah why thank you...
By the Fires of Muspelheim!!
The squad thing was the only new thing Gods & Heroes was doing, and it was actually pretty neat. You could even determine where they stand (putting tanky guys in the front, healers in the back, and they keep that formation as you move), and I liked the Pokemon-esque idea of getting more guys.
Everything else sucked though. Man what a shitty beta.
Also, Warhammer 40K MMO can fuck off if I can't play as a Tau.
Ork is also acceptable.
And then it'll be a huge disappointment.

Play as your filthy Tau then, and feel the wrath of the Emperor.

Colour me quite less excited(though still pretty excited)

But by then we will all be playing Dow2
Not even as a joke.
How DoI mine for Orkz?
As much as I'd prefer if Marines were left out as playable, instead reserved as some kind of expensive 'call down drop pod' tactic for players to bring a squad to the battlefield and gawk at, I think they'd be properly doable as player characters. So long as the developers don't get it in their heads they have to be straight-up 'balanced'. I think a Marine could fairly be much more powerful and resilient than a regular human character as long as their rewards and progressions are scaled consistently; a marine would gain very little from grinding Chaos Cultists or Tau Firewarriors but a Guard squad (or Tank crew) would gain a big reward for killing a single Marine.
The real issue is balance of numbers; when every ankle-biter is going to only play Marines 9 times out of 10, there needs to be a mechanism for keeping only so many in a PVP battlefield left we're stuck with 10 Guardsmen and 50 Marines every time, and I'm not sure unlocking Marines after clocking in so many hours/levels is they way to go. Assuming it'll even feature substantial PVP.
At least we have some facts now.
WTS 2 pure promethium/3 d-field and see my gauntlets of ultramar on the AH!
Doing this game without raping the setting (the modern, watered-down one even!) will be an epic feat.
Sounds like WWIIOL and tanks. Pretty easy to start using them, but hard to keep in supply. Tanks also get way, way less points than infantry(like, kill 10x more infantry with a tank and get 1/10th the points grumble grumble)

Nothing shall stand in the way of the greater good.... or for that matter my XV-88 Broadside Battlesuit....
Seriously though, if tau are in, so am I.
For some reason I take the quote above as "not everything will be playable (at least at first, before an expansion or three) but all the races will be present in the game.) I mean because realistically then, aside from the need for 10 I think it is starting zones, probably up to midlevel then you usher in the more "mixed" zones.... i'm also thinking from a "traditional" MMO standpoint here though. and like everyone is pointing out... were still a long long long way out for this one. so who knows.
It will be something like IG/Space Marines vs Tau/Eldar vs Orks/Chaos(not fighting side by side, but not fighting eachother). Necrons and Tau will make up a large portion of NPC enemies.
