Listening to a police scanner in between leaving messages on his ex wife's machine, leaping up and running out the door whenever he hears ambulance sirens.
Ok, I just had a guy come to my office and talk with the shop owner from Norfolk Southern Railroad. It seems they have a specially trained team of idiots out there that take min-loaders and climb them to the top of topless rail cars and excavate the dirt out of them. One got stuck in mid-climb and is now currently levitating twenty feet off the ground and we have to go with our crane and lift it up so they can cut the hydraulic lines so that it can be lowered to the ground.
Now of course this stupefied the shit out of me as to how the excavator got stuck in mid-air so the gentlemen from Norfolk kindly opened up his Palm Pilot and sent me a few pictures he took of his crew doing what they do.
^The one we are going to fix is double the size of the one in the pictures, but this is the point at which it has now broke down.
Thank god these people exist because they keep me very much secure in my employment.
The loader we are going to fix is on the rail yard / Govt. property so we may not be able to take pictures of the thing flying high, but if we can I will most definitely post the pictures.

The Norfolk Southern Company runs these guys from one end of the U.S. to the other. They only have three teams that are "certified" to do jobs like that.

Man, I always thought the sides folded down or something.
The sides come down to act as a brace and keep the machine in place when it uses that huge shovel / bucket so it doesn't slide down into the hole it is digging if the load in the bucket is heavier than what it can handle, which coincidentally, happens quite often.
Pulling those things out of a hole is fun because at that point the only thing that can pull it out is a crane or a bulldozer. Both are equally bad ass to drive.

For a while they were making them like that, but they found that after so many miles of the cars bumping around on the track the door latches would come apart mid-trip and spill their cargo. Before anyone got crushed at a rail road crossing they went back to the "under the rail car trap doors" that usually get jammed shut with corrosion and other bullshit so that is why they just skip all the mess and climb to the top.
