The folks at Epic Games certainly haven't been shy to make their feelings about the Wii known in the past, but company president Michael Capps took things up a few more notches in a recent interview with IGN, with him not only once again bemoaning the Wii's underpowered hardware, but even going so far as to compare the console to a "virus." You can find Capps' complete musings on the matter at the link below, but the short of it is that he thinks the Wii maintains its success by building on a chain reaction of sorts, with one person buying the console only to get tired of it two months later, but not before they showed it to someone else, who also though it was cool and went out and bought one, and also got bored with it a couple of months later, and so on and so on. Capps does add, however, that there's obviously "a class of people who really love it and enjoy it and are getting into the games," but that he's waiting for "that one game that makes me play it," and that "maybe Wii Fit will be it." That apparently still doesn't mean you can expect to see any games from Epic on the Wii, however, with Capps flatly saying that "we go forward, not back."
Man, I don't know what he is going on about. If it's a virus then I would say it's like some new bioengineered virus that gets rid of headaches and makes you taste ice cream in your mouth.
What is your favorite kind of ice cream? Epic Games would like to know.
There is more truth in what he says than I think a lot of gamers are willing to admit.
To determine the truthfulness of his assertion you'd need to get an accurate cross-section of people who have bought the Wii and whether they are bored with it right now. He's essentially talking out of his ass, and probably just doing it to be controversial.
I do wonder which group has the larger percentage of bored people: newcomers, or traditional gamers?

Wii software sales have been good for a long time and the attach rate isn't bad at all. So unless they bought the console and a bunch of games, I don't see this as true.
Heh. Epic Games is still on a rampage after their precious UT3 stunk up the place it seems. There are plenty of good games on the Wii, so I really have no idea what he's talking about.
They have been bitching an awful lot lately. Did someone get rid of the snack machine in the employee lounge or something? When will they learn to keep this shit to themselves?
When I read the actual interview I thought the virus comment is used to describe how wildly popular the Wii has become. He also says other positive things about Nintendo.
But virus carries a negative connotation. You can never associate Nintendo with something negative. It is law.
Admittedly many people who like Epic's products likely do fit this guy's description as far as their attitude toward the Wii, problem is it's only a small portion of the industry. Wii software sales are fine.

If everyone is getting tired of their Wii after 2 months, shouldn't there be a big fucking pile of used Wiis somewhere waiting to be sold? Shouldn't software sales be in the fucking toilet?
This is simply bullshit whining by a bunch of pricks who can't get over the fact that they bet on the wrong horse. Grow up, Epic.

WHy does he think Wii Fit will be the game for him and not SSBB? Kind of a weird choice if you ask me.
Well, let's see. So far we've got the typical two sides of the Wii thread here.
1) - People who say this guy doesn't really have a basis for what he says. Usually come in every Nintendo-ish thread (this would include me).
2) - People that agree with what the guy says, but always try to make an assertion that no ever thinks badly of Nintendo and that the rest of the people are raving fanboys. Usually come in every Nintendo thread, but are much more annoying because they think no one has caught on to their sarcasm yet.

Or the 3rd magical group that don't give a fucking shit what any Epic employee has to say ever.

They are woefully underspoken.
darley - just wondering. Has anyone on this board EVER said that the Wii is the best thing ever? No, most people who like the Wii are still quick to point out it's flaws (storage, online, horsepower). Seriously, I've never seen anyone completely defend the Wii on all fronts.
Unless that was sarcastic in itself. In which case...yeah.
I think the man has a good point. I know countless people who bought the Wii as their first system. They played Wii Sports for a little while, and now their systems sit collecting dust. They don't trade them in because they don't play video games.
Epic must have been drinking some of that sarsaparilla that angers up the blood. I'll fully admit that the first couple times while playing a wii, I certainly enjoyed it, but the novelty wore off quickly and I was pleased I never bought one. But Galaxy and Brawl are slowly making me change my mind.
More troubling is that he completely discounts the the rather innovative control input and instead rags on the hardware, a problem endemic to the whole fucking industry these days. Yes great graphics are nice, but they aren't the only thing that a great game makes.

Okay? So how does that affect anything at all? I'm sure the people you're describing are in the minority of Wii owners. I mean, shit, my fiance (who used to belittle me for playing video games as often as I do) has pre-orders for Mario Kart and Wii Fit. On top of that she owns about 7 Wii games (one of which I bought for her) AND she just got 120 stars in Mario Galaxy.

I hope Epic's opinion of the Wii doesn't surprise anyone. They've been bagging on it since day-fuckin-one, fer crissakes. Whoop-de-doo, ut3 sux epic phailz wii is gimmik.

It's just as easy for me to say that your fiancee is in the minority.
We have no basis or graphs or anything to chart all these Wii owners, but I know nine people that own a Wii; seven of them only own Wii Sports.
Just saying. Speaking from a standpoint of my own personal perspectives, this dude has a point.

Uh, power gives us a hell of a lot more then merely better graphics. Oh and waggle isn't bloody innovative. That is to say, it's not innovative in any real meaningful sense, and offers us no improvment in how games control. Outside of the pointer, I'll grant that was pretty useful some of the time. But not worth playing with a remote better.
His argument was maybe valid before Brawl came out. But I don't think that game is ever gonna get old.
Man, I've played that game all of one day. The day I got it. The day I woke up early to buy it.
I just haven't had the drive to play it since, the stupid subspace maze I'm stuck in.
It doesn't help that the only two RL friends I have who liked Melee are out of state and don't own Wiis.

Problem is he sounded like an ass while saying it.

Maybe UC3?
Oh yeah, definitely. I mean I imagine someone else could have handled this issue with far more maturity than him.
Might be Gears of War 2. Though I wouldn't bet on it, we would have heard something by now if they were.

Off the top of my head, I think their only announced game is Gears 2.
That will cost you your life!
What bear is best?
