I think that last one's the first realistic thing you've posted here. It's great to see that you can incorporate your style into a drawing while keeping to it's own thing at the same time.
"Whales are docile beasts unless/Forced to fizz and effervesce" is a really great line and really caps off the whole thing. Really great stuff. You should actually make a children's book.
Children's book is fantastic. Looks like something I'd find in the store.
And the portrait is fantastic as well, but I agree with your professor - the sketch is a lot better, I think. It's got more character.
I can't quite my put my finger on it, but I also agree. And I don't think it's the color that did it... there is a subtle loss of detail to the face (specifically the chin) which might be part of it, but I think it might actually be the way you zoomed out.. like the composition of the sketch is better because your head fills more of the frame.
EDIT: hmm, also you face in the sketch seems to have some underlying turmoil, where as you just look sleepy in the final (like in the first you're closing your eyes, and the second your eyes are just closed).
I think most of it is definitely the detail that was lost, but I also feel that in the black and white, everything fit together so much better because it's all kinda grungey, inky, textured...everything seems unified and together. In the color, there's a stark contrast between the background and foreground, and this separates the portrait from the surroundings...a unity that, I think, worked excellently in the original.
Eh, I like the final version more. Perhaps It's probably because I like there is little unity to the background and the character. The background is more surreal while the character is more realistic, so it looks more natural with them contrasting against each other in color.
The other week a friend of min (the one i did the zine cover for) send me some books as a thank-you gift. One of the books was an old guide to artistic places in Philadelphia, titled "A City Sketched". I decided to take a little notebook around to a few of the places in the book, draw them, and send the notebook to her as a surprise. I finished it today, so here's a handful of philadelphia sketches. enjoy:

My favorite in the sigh-man is the computer screen.

Hope that made sense.

Two thumbs up

This is so amazing. And everything else is just as amazing. Your imaginative, abstract style is breathtaking.

One of my favorite things is how serious and artful your stuff looks, with little bits of perfectly dry humor inserted in just the right spots.
