This morning I started doing full touch and speed exercises on the piano again after years absent, with the goal of getting back to concert level form. Anytime I'm on it's composition and arrangement, but never straight performing, so it's time to fix that. When I was younger it proved a great vent for me resulting in some pretty artistic and unique variations on classics so this is feeling fantastic to be slipping back in. Left hand needs some work though, tis rusty.
What instruments do you play SE++? Why do you love that instrument so, and which variation/brand/make is your favorite?
its because I've cluttered my brain with even more useless shit and the ability to read music went with "how to tie your shoes" and "speaking above a whisper" unfortunately
I can't talk quietly, lets team up and together speak at appropriate volumes.
I didn't put much practise in so there are people who are probably far, far more advanced than me who learned in less time. I am also out of practise, of course.
But I really enjoyed music theory and reading music (the piano is great for that), and I shall definitely buy a piano to tinker on once I have my own place. My kids will also learn piano.
I suppose one side effect of not practising much is that I am pretty good at sight-reading.

Theory and composition is wonderful to know and practice. Lots of fun to be had.
And yes, kids will be learning the piano all around.
The range of notes is tremendous. On no other instrument can you play so many notes at the same time, either. And of course it's great for hand co-ordination.
And the best thing of all is that you just lift up a lid and sit down and can immediately belt out a tune. And all it does is need occasional tuning.

I play a bunch of brass - pretty ok on the trombone and baritone although I specialize in trumpets.
I have a beautiful Getzen professional Bb, a Bach Stradivarius Concert C and a Selmar Cornet and I'd really love to pick up a flugelhorn.
I also play Latin Percussion pretty well, I have a nice triple set of LP Congas, 10" quinto, 12" Conga, 14" Tumba and a whole mess of random hand percussion, cowbells, wood blocks, shakers, chimes etc. I'm interested in picking up a set of Timbale some time in the future.
I'm pretty awful on the guitar, but not bad on electric bass and I just bought a Ukulele which is insane amounts of fun to play.

One thing I can't do is improvise. I know a couple of people who can't actually read music and couldn't tell you the first thing about music theory but could sit down and play wonderful jazz melodies.
I really love playing the blues/jazz, actually. It's so easy to fall into the rhythm. However, I have to read the music and if you want to be serious then you really want to be able to improvise.
Romantic era pieces are also fun to play, but fuck Classical. I'll listen to Classical but I don't enjoy playing it so much.
In orchestra I was always jealous of the timpani players. I mean, timpani are just so fearsome.
Oh, and I was in the local youth orchestra for years, until I became a 15 year old and I was giving up my Saturday mornings (prime socialising time); fuck that. I really liked being part of an orchestra (solo violin just isn't the same) but as soon as I began to feel slightly comfortable with the pieces they would move me up into the next orchestra/from second to first violin and then I'd find myself floundering and that was a horrible feeling.
I've been playing guitar and bass for about half as long as I've been alive, and have been in bands about as long. Is this a place where we could show that kind of thing off? Or is that too much..

There's a whole guitar thread, this is for the non-guitar playing losers, sorry.
My first instrument was tenor sax and I loved it. I still have it too, her name is Alice. However, I haven't played in years and have likely lost what skill I once had. Time to reteach myself to read music and I'll be good to go.
I have a guitar that hangs on my wall...yet I have no idea how to play it. I just can't get it down. Maybe I'll look for lessons.

Fortunately I don't care.
Actually I play the guitar and drums too, just at a much lesser level.
It's too bad, because one of my heroes growing up was Chico Marx.
it's something I'd like to start again except
1) no time
2) no money
She hasn't played in like 20 years. Her grandfather was a concert violinist, and he taught her himself.
I hear shit like that, and it makes me crazy. If I had that kind of opportunity as a kid, I wouldn't have squandered it.
Did you enjoy the cello? It's always been an instrument that interested me and deep/bass strings compliment the piano really well.

How do you practice something for eight years and forget how to read the sheet music? You'd probably pick it up quickly if you did go back.
I agree.
I haven't played baritone in like 20 years now, and I still remember how to read sheet music.
FINAL COUNTDOWN ON CELLOS

I never did learn to read music, after I learned the the finger/arm placements I would just play/sing by ear.
That's probably why I'm having a shitty time learning guitar.
i also used to play the marching baritone and oboe, but they were both hard and stupid so i gave up.

I "went electric" a few months ago and it is fantastic. Out rocking my brother's Ibanez and all that.

Need some stuff designed or printed? I can help with that.
Seriously though it really is a beautiful instrument, and akin to floating through a warm dream when played naturally.
I'm not good, but I like it
