All great action movies have chase scenes and many will agree the best chase scenes involve four ton vehicles thundering down crowded streets at top speeds. Hollywood films these days might be full of thin plots and shallow characters but there's no shortage of good car chase scenes or vehicle stunts, either.
What goes into making a car chase 'good' versus 'unforgettable' and what are the standouts?
Favorite car chases - Goldeneye. James Bond chases down kidnappers in a tank. What made the scene work was plenty of collisions with things but nothing could incapacitate that tank. Bond drove through a building, through a truck hauling beer, through a statue, etc. Driving
through things seems to be key.
The Blue Brothers driving, again,
through the mall. Driving with sunglasses must be tough since they hit every kiosk and boutique along the way.
Children of Men - the chase itself wasn't exciting but how it was filmed made it stand out. I don't know how they did it but they filmed the entire chase from inside one car and still made it feel frantic.
How to screw up a good car stunt? The Man with the Golden Gun had an honest to god corkscrew jump over a stream of water. The car flips and spins in the air. So what was added in the editing room to make it better? A cartoon sound effect.

French Connection.
You beat me to it.
Thread over.
Good choice,
Also all three Bourne films
Seriously my jaw was on the floor the entire sequence. Such a good car chase in that movie.
The only thing I didn't like was the cheesy CG tire smoke when he was reversing out of the parking lot.
True, that was a bit much. But the attention to the shifting he was doing was phenomenal.
Oh man...
The TV show had one bland car chase.
What a contrast.
And also, Bullit.
Lasts 2 seconds. Amazing.
Limed for truth!
Also, I like the car chase in Dukes of Hazzard. But the chase in Bullit is by far the best :^:
As for my favourite: SpiceWorld.
Also: The Dark Knight
A hearty hatred of Mini Coops?
If you like helis chasing cars, check out Dirty Mary Crazy Larry
To Live and Die in LA
Most anything with Cary Loftin.
The car chase is low-key, "realistic", and extremely brutal. It is a masterpiece.
And it's got Chow Yun-Fat and Mark Wahlberg in it, what's not to like?
I made a game, it has penguins in it. It's pay what you like on Gumroad.
Currently Ebaying Nothing at all but I might do in the future.
I loved it when the new one came out:
"The best mini cooper car chase ever filmed!"
...because there's so many of them, right?
E: To actually add to the thread, I always liked the hummer/ferrari/trolley chase scene in The Rock.
Death Race 2000 and Duel were all one big chase.
How can you hate Mini Coopers?!?
Driver. The scene in the parking lot where he just crashes the car again and again is my favourite. Not a chase per se, but awesome nonetheless.

The guy I mentioned, Cary Loftin, was the stunt driver for Vanishing Point. He was also excellent behind the wheel in Against All Odds, which was filmed when Loftin was 70.
Was going to mention this - the 1st movie - the beat up mini.
Not only crazy, but illegal.
Here's the back story.
Personally, I think it's amazing how it conveys such a large range of emotion.
The Hunter
Yay! Someone mentioned Duel. That movie freaked my shit out when I was about ten. Spielberg really knew his shit, even back then.
I will agree however that the car chases in Ronin were just amazing.
Not to mention there was a hot babe on a Ducati. You just can't beat that.

that.
Ronin
Bourne 1/2/3
Blues Brothers
Matrix Reloaded <- My favorite car chase and it's also pretty much the peak of the Matrix franchise, it all goes to shit from there. they should have rolled the credits with the semi collision and explosion w/ Neo flying into the rescue. Called it a day, called it a series. But no, they had to keep going.
