We have one of these every once in a while, but it's been a while and I always like to hear what other music folks are doing around these parts.

I'm currently playing bass in two different bands, but you guys all know that, they're both linked in my sig. But this thread isn't about me (for once) it's about YOU!

Post your shit, tell me what you're up to. Are you recording? Touring? Playing shows locally? WHAT'S THE SKINNY?!

David%20Lee%20Roth%204.jpg

Not in a band? Well what do you play? Who are your influences?

    So. I play a little.

Also I'm a music Composition Major, 2 years at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, then transferred(ish, long story) to Penn State to work with Dr. Barsom(Best teacher ever).

So also a bit of a musician.

im trying to learn guitar. ive been taking lessons since jan i think. Its so much better then trying to do shit by myself

but I suck at chart notes now. I can play all of them in first position but i dont remember the names well enough to do it in second position. its like i know what to play when i see this note but i have to think about what that note is to translate it into 2nd pos.

I love lessons though. I love practicing. I shouldve done it a long time ago

Depends on how "inexpensive" you're looking for. You can get some really good stuff in the under $200 range. From the affordable and effective Epiphone Embassy to the badass, panty-pealing Dean Z Metalman.

I'm thinking its because I played bass in middle school and first year in high school, he likes to copy me alot. But I have no fucking clue where to start.

They stopped letting kids play guitars in my local schools in music class so I'm thinking he wants to learn on his own time. He himself doesn't really know why he wants to play he just said its awesome. (which is correct)

Bass is not like guitar. You can't just string together a few chords, call it a song and have the ladies flocking.

For a bass to sound good on its own, you have to be really really fucking good. Like two orders of magnitude better than you would have to be with a guitar.

    Bastard.

I've got a two week lull before any of my regular gigs start up again.

And I just came off of like, 6 gigs at once.

The good news is I have like, time now to, like, sleep.

The bad news is I'm also not making any money right now.

This is totally correct, but I often encourage young kids to take up bass for two reasons.

    1. Because when you're that young, the guitar player isn't going to be playing anything special, so you can just play 8th notes on the root note all day long and people will clap.

    2. Because when you get to be older, you realize that there are very few true bass players. The majority of bands out there end up either having a guy who's normally a guitarist play bass or they'll just up and teach someone from the ground up. When you've been playing for more then a decade like I have, you can pick and choose what bands you want to play in and people will be knocking down your door trying to get people to play for them.

I made money with my band once. We made 100 dollars. 50 dollars apiece. Technically more like 47-48 because we bought a tambourine before hand for a song we performed on that occasion. The song didn't go well, we never sang it again.

We sometimes struggle with my very geeky attitude and sense of humor, and my partner's not-geeky sense of humor. It causes friction, which in a two man novelty acoustic duo, is a bad thing.

I don't think he knows yet, I think he just likes the sound of bass, and that appeals to him.

also he said this a couple nights back when I asked him why bass "too many people play the damn guitar I want to do my own thing."
