Team Ico's next game is still pretty damn far away
If you've played the fantastic Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, you're probably wondering when Fumito Ueda's next game is coming out.
And the answer is: not anytime soon.
Speaking with UK magazine gamesTM, the Sony developer explained that he's "not feeling any pressure" yet, and that "time is not critical" for the upcoming title.
"Production has not reached the critical stage. The company is very reasonable thanks to my achievements in the past. So, although I do get (pressured), that's not happened yet (on the current project), and that's something I feel gratitude for, that the company gives us the opportunity to focus by giving us time," he said.
So... What did you want to discuss? Not trolling or anything, just honestly curious what your idea is for this thread since there is nothing to talk about yet.
Well, a lot of people are excited about when his next game is coming out, and this is news that the game isn't coming out any time soon, likely not this year.
The PS3 will be alive. Sony's got more than enough resources for that. I hope I can afford it by then. I also hope I haven't broken and gotten a 360 by then X_X
I'm glad that it won't come out for a while, since this is the only game that I would possibly buy a PS3 for, and this way it gives me the opportunity to wait for the PSthree or whatever they will call the cheap, sleek and small slimline updated version this time. Surely it'll be like half as small as the fridge they have now, maybe even smaller.
On the one hand, yay for letting him get things right, on the other hand, his game might not show up until the PS4 at this rate.
C'mon, this is Fumito Ueda, not Dennis Dyack. We'll definitely see a game from him on the PS3. Its just becoming increasingly unlikely that we'll see two.

This.
Pretty much since the Square announcement about FFXIII, there really isn't much of a reason for me to want a PS3. Team Ico's games notwithstanding.
I own two copies of Ico (one died) and have played the crap out of Shadow of the Colossus. Although Team Ico has only created two games, both have been more than stellar. If the next game is on the same level as Shadow or Ico, then I would most certainly run out and buy a PS3 on release day.
I really think that Team Ico is one of the strongest proponents of "games as art", because what they've done so far can't really be described as anything other than a masterpiece of gaming.
So, in closing, Ueda is Sony's last bastion and savior... don't let us down :!!:
I hope that more companies start to adopt the philosophy that a completed game is much better than a rushed one, just to meet an unreasonable deadline.

Mind telling me where you got "Team Ico's next game is still pretty damn far away" from that? He said that time isn't critical but that doesn't suddenly mean Sony are going to let him take however long and as much money as he wants.
A couple of weeks back Shuhei Yoshida (CEO of SCEWW) told a website (might've been Eurogamer, I can't remember) that Team Ico took around 4 years to develop Ico, 4 years to develop SotC and will probably take 4 years to make their next title, which is why he calls them their 'Olympic Team'. My guess is that Sony will reveal it at TGS in October and it'll be scheduled for a late 2009/early 2010 release.

Bolded the critical part, but if you're expecting a late 2009/early 2010 release (which is what I was thinking), then what are we disagreeing about? That's pretty damn far away.
Someone tell me why Shadow of the Colossus was good. I honestly have tried to like it three times and each time it is lost on me.
I'm not trolling it, I recognise enormous amounts of people love that game, but serious - why. Honest question.
Right off the bat, the game takes the puzzle game approach and makes it interesting. I'm really good at puzzles, but I don't usually like playing video games that are purely puzzle based. SoC takes that formula and presents it in a manner that feels like an adventure/platformer (which is my favourite genre).
You really need to be able to suspend all disbelief and immerse yourself into the gameworld. This game really appeals to those who just love exploration. There's a lot to see and explore if you wander aimlessly. I think that if you have a vivid imagination, this game can really tap into it.
Also, the game is epic on the grandest scale. There's nothing like launching yourself hundreds of feet in the air from the momentum of a giants' sword swinging upwards, then plunging your sword into the colossus' head, felling the enormous beast in one blow.
There's more, but I could honestly write a paper about this game.
Well, I'll amend this post with one further point before I go: The horse. In my opinion, he is the pinnacle of animal animation in video games. It's movements are exaggerated, yet graceful, not a single detail is missed. No other horse in a video game has felt right before this one... and I find myself comparing it to every horse I see in a game since. He truly feels alive and develops a "personality" throughout the game. You come to realize that he is your only companion and the only thing your can trust other than yourself. Think Atreyu and Artax, but with an even stronger bond.
He also helps with the overall epic-ness of the game. Some of the stunts you can pull are pretty damn awesome. Leaping off of a dragon in mid-flight, only to land right on your horse and continue riding is very fulfilling.

The ending is one of the most (if not the most) moving endings to a video game ever conceived.
Also, don't you love boss battles? Because Fumito Ueda said the concepts behind it was that he loved bosses, and when he played games, he often found himself looking forward to the next boss. So he decided to make a game that was just bosses.
The bosses are immense in the fact that they are essentially gigantic puzzles. You need to figure how to beat them.

This did not deserve to be at the bottom of the page. Wonderful post.
I like SotC because of the art and music, the platforming and sense of scale, and the story. It's simple but it works. All of it creates this wonderful sense of solitude and melancholy that I have not experienced in any other media. If you like depressing movies, books, and music, SotC is for you. If you can enjoy a silent moment with someone else in the room, SotC is for you.
I've played through it 10 times now. Usually takes me 4 hours. Took about 9 hours the first time.
Sad to hear that Team Ico's next game is so far out, but glad to know they're taking the time to make it right.
I must be getting old -- I think a game coming out in over a year's time is "pretty soon." I was pumped when I heard Disgaea 3 was coming out, back, what, in the spring sometime. And now it's out in like 2 weeks. Seems like just yesterday I heard about it.
I already own a PS3, yet haven't played any of the previous PS2 games. I'm hopeful it holds up to the quality I've heard for the previous two titles, although as someone who owns a PS3 and enjoys it regularly, I don't get the PS3 hate in this thread.

I know what you mean. I had a four year wait for MGS4 after seeing the first trailer. Next to that this game will be here before I know it!

No kidding. I waited on FFXII from announcement to release. Everything else is peanuts.
Arrrgh. Sad news. It'd be nice if someone would port Ico/SotC to nicer graphics, but I'm sure that won't happen. And if they did they'd fuck it up.
Shadow of the Colossus was already in the upper echelon when it came to graphics last gen, so that would be pretty unnecessary. Well, the framerate could use some help but that's it. Hardly worth the effort of porting.

I never asked for this!
As a fan of his games, it's a bit of a bummer.
It makes me sad.

I'm happy they're not rushing this.
Agreed.

"A delayed game is eventually good. A bad game is bad forever."
I think its: "A late game is only late until it comes out, a bad game is bad forever"

I enjoyed:
- The atmosphere and story
- The large world to explore
- The awesome collossus battles
It's ok to not like games everyone else does. I've tried to find an iota of enjoyment in a Metal Gear Solid title many times but it simply eludes me.

God the music.
So good.

Tell me about. Epic off the chart.
Especially "Despair Filled Farewell" and "The Sunlit Earth". Two favourites of mine.
Edit: more of a cover really.
The other one on OC is good too, "Snowfall On Forbidden Land" I think it's called.
Excellent stuff.
Sacrilege.
I like how it's all rocky and stuff, but pulls out a violin halfway.
It's pretty cool.
