So I bought bloodlines off of steam, lucky I brought my personal laptop to work today. This should be great, I love CRPG games and can't wait to get this shit underway.

Awesome, just make sure you patch it up first. It can be buggy as hell otherwise.

edit: I would suggest starting with the 'pure' patch from Tessmage's site. Make sure you're applying this to a version that already has the latest patch from Activision (1.2). You can get more info on Tessmage's site if needed, just be warned that it's NSFW (lots of nude skins for various video games).

So you all want an old CRPG to play? Try Darklands, if you can ever find it. I've voiced my love for the game several times in the past here, and it's such a great game. Really old (1992), and Microprose's only RPG. Very nicely-done, with character advancement done in a totally skill-based system and a proto-Infinity Engine combat system. Huge, open world and some neat unique quirks (no magic, aging party members), but sold poorly despite critical acclaim. Nearly impossible to legally obtain nowadays, though. Very deep and has a steep learning curve, but it's a game that's never left my hard drive since I got it in 1995.

i was bored during work yesterday, so i extracted every text file and read them to see what all was in the pack. just about every npc is somewhat unique now and several towns/continents/dungeons/houses/mansions/etc have been added. it really is like playing a new game now.

If there is, it's total news to me. It's been out of print for over ten years, and the small company that bought the distribution rights to it a while back since vanished from the internet. There's only one real website that's any resource for the game, and it's Darklands.net, which itself hasn't been updated in seven years. Whichever way you end up getting it through, you'll need the copy-protection booklet that comes with it, which is available on that site. Hell, my original fully-legal copy of Darklands didn't even have the thing, and I had to play the game by guessing the copy protection challenges for years.

For all the effort you have to go through to get it, though, it's a damn good game and quite a bit before its time. Designing a modern remake in the vein of Sid Meier's Pirates! for something like XBLA or PSN has been a dream of mine for years.

Edit: You can find copies used on Amazon, but they go for fairly ridiculous prices. $90? No way.

V:TM counts as an older game, eh?

Didn't necessarily mean to imply that, just that it's one of the only PC games I can still pick up and play long after completing it.

    Also, reasons to buy Bloodlines:

You can kill people instantly with vampire insanity
You can call a swarm of insects to eat someone alive
You can move faster than a speeding clown car
You can use magical force of will to cause multiple people to murder THEMSELVES
You can hide in plain sight and stand next to security guards with a boomstick like no big deal
You can transform into a half man, half vampire, half wolf fuckmonster
You can make people's blood boil in their body until they die from it or make them vomit blood just for the hell of it
You can can choose which group of necrotic suckbags to ally yourself with or just kill everything in sight
Also there's a scary haunted level

Uh, uh, things that make me pee myself!
    Things that are brutal!
Things that are blacker than the blackest black!
No wait, I got it: Things that make me want to go back in time so I can already own them.

Now where's my fucking hundred thousand dollars?

Holy crap! Planescape widescreen patch! I could never stand the tiny 640x480 screen, but now I'm hooked, I played for several hours last night and still haven't left the first town (Sigil).

Also, fuck Unreal AI! I don't remember for sure about 1, but Unreal 2's enemies had instant reflexes making any weapon with a travel time and no splash damage WORTHLESS, everything would just roll/dodge out of the way until it was in your face and proceed to rape you.
That said, I did play Unreal through the UT Oldskool mod a while back and it was a blast :D

    Trust me, it's genuine gloriousness.

Back on old PC games, I'm still playing good ol' Doom to this day. Truly a game that stood the test of time (Well I'm using a source port, but still, just crank the resolution up and you're good to go)

I would wait for the 0.77 release of Spring (which isn't called TA Spring any longer, and never was called Total Annihilation: Spring).

Allows you to cycle through points (hit F3 multiple times)
Automatic map and mod downloading in the default lobby
Much better font system (and the default fonts are prettier too)
New water shader (with dynamic waves, reflections and refractions, but faster than dynamic water)
    Hardware mouse cursor support
    Ingame alliances
Music playing support (well once someone codes an interface for it)
Singleplayer support in default lobby (though Spring singleplayer isn't so fun)
    Tons of bugfixes
    Tons of optimizations
    Whispering

Those are just the changes I find important though, and its nothing compared to the massive changelog since last time there was a Spring topic here...

I still install and play that from time to time. One of my favorite games ever. Probably as tense a game as I've ever played, and the atmosphere is incredible.
I can't get Gold to work on XPs. I suspect it's a dual core issue, but trying the affinity tricks people used to for the game to use only one didn't work for me.

Also, Unreal held up fabulously. Even if the level design is mostly nonsensical, the graphics are glorious and the gameplay is fun. The Sunspire. <3
And Skaarj are still the most devious enemy to fight in close quarters ever made.
Hell yes. It's pretty amazing that not only do the graphics hold up (low poly models aside), but the AI remains downright nasty. Only a few games -- Valve's stuff, maybe FEAR, one or two others -- have managed to surpass the pure, unpredictable rapage the Skaarj will give you.

As per this thread, I suggest that anyone who hasn't played the original Unreal but who likes shooters to do so, stat. It's still a good game.

I could not second this motion enough. Unreal is dated, but it still hits all the right notes even now. The Sunspire level is amazing no matter how many times I play through it. :^:

Okay, if you thought Enemy Unknown was hard...

TftD is about THREE TIMES HARDER. Part of the problem is that you need to have special weapons for the terror missions because the normal weapons won't work above water.
