PAX 08 BYOC Information

This is a copy of the email that went out to all the byoc participants, reposted here for your convenience.

--- Basic LAN Party Information ---

If you've never been to a lan party, be sure to bring the following equipment:

BYOC Ticket from Brown Paper Tickets and 3 day PAX pass
Computer
Monitor (Please no bigger than 24" LCD or 21" CRT)
Keyboard
Mouse (Wired mice and keyboards are recommended for lan parties)
Mouse pad
Ethernet cable (15 feet should be sufficient, but it's better to have
longer than shorter).
Power cables
Power strip
Headphones
Games CDs/DVDs, Windows CD, and backups for other programs you may
need to install/reinstall.

I would strongly suggest printing out that list and keeping it close to check things off as they get packed. If you forget a cable, feel free to talk to an enforcer and we may be able to help you out.

While we will have Internet access, it is strongly recommended that you update Steam before packing up your computer and download/install any and all other patches you may need. Every minute you spend downloading stuff is a minute you can't spend having fun!

It is also mandatory that you run virus protection on your computer before connecting it to our network. Any computers that are found with a virus will be immediately disconnected from the network until the matter is resolved.

--- Basic PAX BYOC Information ---

The PAX BYOC schedule is as follows:

Friday: 2:00pm - 3:00am
Saturday: 10:00am - 3:00am
Sunday: 10:00am - 6:00pm

Everyone should have received a BYOC ticket stub from Brown Paper Tickets in the mail, and you should also either have received a 3 day pass, will be receiving one shortly. Please have both items with you when you first come to PAX. If you don't get the 3 day pass, you can pick it up in will Call on the 4th floor South Lobby, and the window will be open all morning to help you out.

You will need both a red 3-day admission badge as well as your BYOC ticket stub to access the BYOC area this year. Both of these are mailed out beforehand – if you don't receive one or either, don't stress!, we'll take care of you at the will-call window on the first floor of the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. The window will be open all morning to help you out.

Entry into PAX BYOC is in the north lobby on the fourth floor just south of the Exhibition Hall. BYOC badge pickup will be before the glass doors on the fourth floor, and we're going to try real hard to start letting people in an hour or two before the start of the show on Friday to give you time to set up your computer and still make the mad dash to the expo hall when everything opens.

If you're coming as part of a group, check out the seating chart to pick an area (posted here: http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=48874 ) and have one member of the group contact BigRed at reasonablylucid@gmail.com so we can make sure you can all sit together...the deadline for that is August 22nd, so don't delay!

--- Security Information ---

It's very important to us that you feel secure in leaving your computer alone to see panels, concerts, and participate in any of the other gaming opportunities available at PAX. As such, we do put more emphasis on security than most lan parties. Before you enter the PAX BYOC area, you will have to quickly register any computer and monitors that come into or out of the computer area. We've gone to great lengths to keep the check in and check out process as streamlined as possible, but do be patient. You can help us out by making sure your BYOC badge is easily visible, as nobody without that badge will be allowed inside the BYOC room.

When PAX closes Friday and Saturday at 3:00am, just leave your computer there and we'll lock up the entire room until staff arrives the next morning.

While we will make every attempt to keep all equipment in the room safe, do be aware that there is little we can do to prevent ipods, portable game consoles, cd's, big wads of cash, and other small items from walking off. We strongly suggest you keep such items out of plain view and use some common sense when it comes to your own security.

If you're coming with a laptop, we strongly recommend you invest in a laptop lock particularly if you plan on leaving your laptop unaccompanied while you rock out to the Minibosses. Here's one for $10 after rebate.

--- Tournament Information ---

All PC Tournament information can be found on the PAX forums, at this address:

http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?t=65415

--- BYOC Activities ---

If you joined us last year, you'll be familiar with the BYOC activities we run. Unlike the tournaments, they're kept pretty casual and serve as a great way to have some quick fun, and perhaps win some prizes along the way.

Details will available at PAX, but here's a quick rundown...also note that all of this is especially subject to change. Check the pax forum for updates.

Scavenger hunt Twitter contest: Sign up and follow PAX_BYOC (twitters will also be sent to our Intranet site) to get objectives and lead your three man team to victory as you solve puzzles and track down objectives from the far corners of PAX. Additional information can be found here:

http://forums.penny-arcade.com/showthread.php?p=6671054#post6671054

Pong: A quick and dirty pong game will be on the local Intranet (the address will be http://pax). Your high scores will be recorded on a leaderboard posted on the main Intranet site, and whoever's on top of that board at the end of PAX wins!

Geek Wars: A multi-staged battle to the death represented by two main teams, orange and blue. As each of the contests listed below are completed, not only will the individuals be awarded prizes, but the team the individual represents will also score points. And what happens if your team wins? Win and find out!

Friday ---

2:30pm (depending on our ability to let people into the pc room early and other factors). Blindfolded FPS - one person steers while blindfolded, and the other barks orders. Whoever can rack up more points wins at life.

4:30pm. Peggle: You will have just watched the omeganauts compete in this PAX 10 game, now it's your turn to see how you do!

6:00pm. Tetris: Really now, what else needs to be said?

7:00pm. Informal session with THQ featuring a quiz and prizes!

10:00pm. Gemcraft: If you haven't played this tower defense styled game, you should definitely give it a whirl. Perhaps while trying to win prizes?

Saturday ---

1:00pm. Battlefield 2: Join in what hopes to be an epic scale Geek Wars battle between Orange and Blue.

4:00pm. Flatout Ultimate Carnage: This new incarnation of the celebrated motor demolition game could not go uncelebrated at PAX. The game will be on our freeplay machines to give it a whirl if you haven't yet purchased it.

7:00pm. BFG Sponsored Trackmania: Completing the track may feel like an achievement in of itself, but you'll have to do it faster than anyone else if you'd like to claim the prizes provided by BFG!

10:00pm. Multiwinia: The sequel to Darwinia from the developers of DEFCON, we're going to get a sneak peak at this game as they'll be on our freeplay computers...but the contest, that is all for you.

1:00am. BFG Rocket Race: This contest includes a field trip out into the sky bridge where your objective will be to throw your BFG Rocket as close to the target as possible, and preferably, closer than anyone else...unless you DON'T want to collect on some prizes provided by BFG.

Sunday ---

1:00pm. Audio Surf: You've probably heard about this PAX 10 game available over Steam...but have you competed in it? This will be your chance.

4:00pm. MS Paint Contest: The rules are simple...draw a picture using only MS Paint. The picture must not be crude, but they must be funny. The funnier the better. Pictures to be judged by PAX celebrity, Mike "Shocker" Baum.

PAX 2008 BYOC Scavenger hunt Twitter contest.

THIS ISNT YOUR TYPICAL SCAVENGER HUNT!
Your scavenger hunt missions will be unknown until they are assigned via PAX_BYOC on twitter!
Don’t worry if you don’t want a twitter account. On our intranet page there is a twitter feed for PAX_BYOC. It is highly suggested that you sign up for twitter and follow PAX_BYOC. At PAX you might want to set it for device updates so you get the latest missions right to your phone* for the best chance at winning. Otherwise you will just have to check the intranet page in BYOC often for the latest updates.

*(as long as you don’t mind a bunch of text messages during PAX. We aren’t responsible for costs if you don’t have an unlimited plan or if you go over)

    Details/rules/prizes/misc info in spoiler tag
    Details:
This is a team based contest, Teams will consist of 3 people. No more, no less. Team Signups will take place Friday just after we get everyone checked into BYOC.
This contest will take place throughout all of PAX
The majority of missions will try to avoid major PAX events that a lot of people are attending, but I’m only shooting for 70% avoidance of those, there may be a mission anytime during PAX hours, and possibly an overnight mission or two.

Your Team will have to retrieve something from the target and your whole team return it to BigRed / the BYOC security desk for mission credit
    And/Or
Take a picture (digital camera/cell phone) of the target with all team members in the picture and return to BigRed / the BYOC security desk for mission credit
Details about which you will have to do will be in the twitter mission.

Missions will have a “To be completed by” time attached to them, the objective must be returned to BigRed / BYOC security desk by that time for mission credit. Most missions will be 30-60min in length.

This contest is only for PAX BYOC attendees. All team members must be PAX BYOC attendees.

    Scoring:
Teams will be scored on the number of missions completed.
For every mission that is returned, it will have a “time score” attached to it.
(First team back gets 1, second team back gets 2, etc.)
    # of missions completed and the time score will be added up on the final sheet.

Winner will be the most missions completed.
In the event of a tie, the winning team will go off their time score, lowest wins.

    PRIZES:
There *WILL* be prizes for this. The first and second place teams already have prizes for them. I may have more by the time PAX rolls around but its staying unannounced for the time being. At PAX itself I will announce what the prizes will be.
There also may be little prizes attached to some of the missions.

I'm actually gunna hold off on the email a bit so if someone here catches a mistake or has questions, I have the option of fixing it pre-send.

So don't panic if you're byoc and don't get one right away!

    Yay.. contest! must do em!

Okay, so it says we can get in 'a couple hours early' (maybe) to do setup, but what time is the best time to show up? Last year I showed up nice and very early and actually ended up first in line, which was cool, but did entail a bit of a wait (yay for the DS).

Depnding how setup goes I may even be doing a couple line events/contests before pax opening :)

Looks like this has to be mentioned here:

    1) only PAX BYOC attendees can get into BYOC. There are no guests allowed into BYOC.
    2) only PAX BYOC attendees can participate in all of these BYOC contests and get the prizes for the BYOC contests.

There's a really big part of me that agrees with you. Man, I had such good times in the original UT.

But, alas, that's not really in the cards on account of not many byoc people having it plus the unjustified difficulty of getting it on our freeplay systems.

But yes, the original UT rocked. One of my favorite games ever.

So is the blindfolded FPS game going to be done on the freeplay systems? That seems preferable given that it makes a level playing field and no one has to worry about having the game. I for one, don't own any UT game after the original, neither does the dude I'm bringing.

We'd prefer to run it on byoc because there are so many other byoc contests we'll end up having to use freeplay machines on. A final decision hasn't been made yet, and it may well depend on the pool of participants and what games they have.

This one isn't really about the game itself, it's about the teamwork required.

If you guys arent following that twitter account yet id start doing so.

Im doing a pre-pax mission. No teams, all individuals. Prize will be a $50 gamestop giftcard.

This one isnt a race, those who complete the mission will be entered into a drawing for the prize at the BYOC lineup before PAX. The winner will be drawn just before we start seating people.

Mission Details will be posted in a few days.*

*I wont be posting mission details here, just giving everyone a heads up to start following the twitter account

All the pre-pax missions are indvidual missions, not team. Only the ones during pax are team missions.

Default policy for the WSCTC is no outside food or drinks, but if you are carrying in something just for yourself from like subway or something, in the past you dont get stopped.

Just dont bring in a suitcase full of food or cooler of drinks (You can keep that stuff in your car and walk down to retreive items out). Also dont make a mess.

I am going to have to mention something that I hope people see in time.

If you bought a BYOC ticket from somebody else you *NEED* to let me know who you bought it from and your infos.

Easiest way would be to get the previous ticket owner to PM me his name/addy/phone, and you also would PM me your name/addy/phone.

To get your actual BYOC pass im comparing your ID to whats in the database of people who bought tickets. Also if you bought a lot of tickets yourself for many people that are coming with you... only you can get the BYOC passes since its your name/addy that will be on file.
