okay, okay hang on, I haven't seen this movie in like 7 years, but here's my issue with it

it starts off as a very interesting examination of modern white collar men who have lost touch with their masculinity, and attempt re engage in it in a very extreme way. I was basically very disappointed when the plot began to shift toward the underground conspiracy angle, I thought the movie could have gone to more interesting places if it kept it's scope smaller.

and man I love Duck Soup

Not at all. It's about a group of men who are just extremely upset with how their lives are going and how their willingness to coexist in this society they were unwillingly brought up into was so completely foolish. They just want to escape the mental prison that they've been in for so long, and in the process they enter a new mental prison and thus the satire emerges. They drift so far from the life they once had only to go into a new life that, while being radically different, still adheres to the basic rules of their former life.

The fight club is in essence fighting to cut each member down to his core, who they really are spiritually and psychologically without any other influences or worries or anything. Durden destroys their mold to apply a new one how he sees fit.

okay maybe not, but what they were rebelling against was in a way valid. at the very least it was an understandable frustration, no?

SAYING SOMETHING IS UNDERSTANDABLE IS NOT THAT SAME AS SAYING IT'S VALID

LIKE CHRIS ROCK, AND HIS "I DON'T CONDONE IT, BUT I UNDERSTAND"

OR JOHN DOE IN SE7EN. YOU CAN'T SAY HE TOOK THE RIGHT PATH, BUT A LOT OF HIS RHETORIC IS UNDERSTANDABLE

EDIT: THE BEST VILLAINS ARE THE ONES WITH THOSE KERNELS OF SYMPATHY

i took something different from the end of the film

durden was constantly pushing for jack to give up, hit rock bottom, lose all hope

how much lower can you get than killing yourself

jack threw it all away, but the gunshot wasn't fatal. jack hits bottom, tyler wins, the jack personality dies, and tyler takes his lady to the window to look at what he's wrought

yeah well there's different levels of understandability. there's understandable villain, which you might put tyler durden or john doe into. then there's understandable protagonist, which can still be 'not what you'd do' and yeah, invalid, but at least not deviant enough to overwrite the majority of the character's other values. see norton's character. then there's just completely rational, human thinking, which i guess you'd call 'valid' and is (in the context of a movie like fight club) quite boring.

what on earth am i talking about

A lot of your interpretation Pooro hinges on how you see gender and its fundamental aspects. Masculinity and femininity are still hotly debated definitions and saying that anarchy is inevitably the ultimate expression of masculinity is really demonizing the male influence. As in all other things, balance is what we should strive for. The balance between the masculine and the feminine is no different. When one side is emphasized over the other, abuses will follow, no matter which side is being overemphasized.

i always thought that the gun to the head pretty much just destroyed the mental split itself, and the result is neither tyler nor jack - an amalgalm which has jack's humanity and tyler's control and strength

    NO, I AGREE

THE SECOND HALF IS TOTALLY A NATURAL EVOLUTION OF THE FIRST HALF

HOW THAT THINKING (THAT THE PROBLEM WITH HUMANITY IS FEMININE INFLUENCE AND LACK OF STRONG MALE FIGURES) IS FUCKING RETARDED.

HOW PEOPLE PEOPLE THAT THINK THAT WAY ARE REALLY JUST LOOKING FOR AN EXCUSE TO BLOW SHIT UP.

NOTE HOW THE LAST SHOT IS JACK WITH HIS LOVE INTEREST - EMBRACING THAT FEMININE INFLUENCE AS HE LOOKS OUT ON WHAT UNBRIDLED TESTOSTERONE HAS WROUGHT.

Look I agree with all of that I just wasn't satisfied by the way they went about exploring it

okay movie thread time to yell at people about In Bruges again (until everyone has seen it)

Even after Dark Knight, Wall*E, and some older films that i only saw this year (Michael Clayton, There Will Be Blood), In Bruges is still my favorite of 2008 as of right now. May not have been the best outright movie (those latter ones are pretty damn good), but still my favorite.
