Chris Avellone is better than you

Chris Avellone is a pretty awesome dude.

He wrote some games you may be familiar with.

For instance:
230px-KOTOR_II.jpg
Or
250px-PC_Game_Fallout_2.jpg
or
250px-Planescape-torment-box.jpg

You may have heard of these games.

What makes Avellone so great is that most of the time his games don't focus on finding that you're the destroyer of the universe and you have to save the universe or rule it with an iron fist, you learn about people. That's right, he does video game character pieces bitches. You can't handle that, can you?

He also looks at video game conceits and turns them on their head. For instance, Kreia(KOTORII), will lie to you, as your mentor figure. She is the type of character you instinctively assume is the "tutorial" character, giving you basically the way to play the game, then she just fucks your brain with a spiky dildo. Why? Because Chris Avellone said so. What are you going to do about it? Nothing, because you're still trying to grasp it.

In Planescape torment, instead of saving the world, all you're trying to do is learn about yourself. By the end
you find that you tried to atone for your sins by becoming an immortal, but by a tragedy of your immortality, sometimes you lose your memory.
Think about that shit, bitches. You're a character who is denied his ability to do the right thing. You're a character who is denies his ability to do the right thing. In a video game. That is crazy. It's like if Angel had his arms and legs cut off. But instead of whining like a bitch about it, he did the amputee worm to kill some bitch anyways.

Chris Avellone is God.

If you don't know this already, subscribe to gametap and download Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, IWD and IWDII.

Right now Chris Avellone is working on Alpha Protocol. How good is it going to be? Right now Chris Avellone is working on it.

What did he have to do with Baldur's Gate?

I just checked, and he wasn't the writer.

Of course, because he's written much better, it doesn't really fucking matter.

He was at Interplay while it was developed apparently.

Wow they put him in the credits for that.

Probably because they knew his name even being associated would drive it to being as awesome as it is.

It looks like modern day Mass Effect. It's funny how whenever these guys aren't doing a sequel to a Bioware game, it's still sort of a sequel to a Bioware game.

They're like the yin to their yang in the North American RPG market.

Only real similarity is that it's a action (read: FPS hybrid) RPG

Consider that KOTORII had a 13 month development cycle, and still, despite the weak-assed ending, managed to be one of the best written games ever.

Well see here's what you have to realize.

Bioware makes amazing games. Incredible games.

When they worked with Black Isle(Read: Chris Avellone), they got a reputation for making incredible games with amazing writing.

They have ok writers now, but they don't have Chris Avellone, so their writing seems like it's shit.

However, Obsidian does have Chris Avellone.

He alone really does make that much of a difference.

I wouldn't go that far, maybe 1.5 times better. Sure the latest Bioware games have been kinda bland shit. But have you played NWN2?

NWN2's base story sucked because Avellone got some flak for KOTOR II's plot, which was his most widely-played storyline, and then tried something different and attempted to make a "Bioware plot". It didn't work out too well.

By all accounts, Mask of the Betrayer's story is a return to form and leagues beyond NWN2's OC.

Which is really interesting, because the problem with KOTORII was nothing to do with the writing.

Hell, anyone who thinks so should just read the SA KOTORII Let's Play.

Like, they got a lot of shit for not finishing the game(in 13 month), so Avellone decided to change the writing for NWN2. It was completely removed from the problem with KOTORII

A large chunk of the game, and therefore the writing, is missing from Kotor II. And people shouldn't have to resort to some online playthrough of it to enjoy the writing in the game. Shouldn't they be able to get that by, oh I don't know, playing the game?

Planescape has some of the most brilliant, emotionally-affecting writing in games, but that doesn't excuse Kotor II from shipping without an ending.

There's supposedly a leaked beta version of it.

Most of the problems with NWN2 came with how horrible the engine itself was, both wasting a lot of power and being really difficult to control. Most of which is now fixed. I don't get people who complain about it's story and characters, I mean, look at the campaign in the original NWN

I hear that in Alpha Protocol you spend several hours with an octogenarian arms dealer in your squad. She refuses at length to bow to traditional game stereotypes and has dialog that encourages moral ambiguity despite morality being systemically objective and measurable in the game as well as the IP upon which the game is based. Eventually, after several hours of conversation, she attacks you.
