Hellboy 2 was a beautiful mess.

I wish they had used at least some plot from the original comics like they did with the first one.

for me it was more frustrating

i was all "fuck you aragorn we've got a story to move along, quit yer fucking yappin' already, jeez!"

also the inclusion of tom bombadil felt like the unnecessary pit stop one mile after the start of a road trip because someone forgot to take a shit.

if graphic designers get to be snobs about dudes without diplomas getting graphic design jobs, i get to be a snob about a linguist deciding to write novels about the languages he makes up

"The Lord of the Rings" fails utterly as a series of novels.

It's unbelievably successful as an artificial English mythological epic.

It was intended as the latter, it's most often read- by both fans and detractors- as the former.

tolkien himself would admit that the lord of the rings was written mostly for his own pleasure, and through portions of it he was mostly creating a world for the languages he created to exist in. Look at The Hobbit in comparison. It is a much better book, as far as writing and story telling goes.

That said, the book is still nothing to sneeze at or write off as terrible. Tolkien was a linguist and the language that he uses is quite beautiful. No, it's not concise or paced very well--and it probably would not have been published as it appears today were it submitted to a modern editor, but calling it 'terrible' is pretty stupid--considering the scope is a work of genius.

What I'm saying is that both sides are right in different respects.

So would you say it would be fair, to use you own metaphor, to criticize Yo-Yo Ma for his lack of electric bass?
