Good Jazz Recordings

edited November 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
After listening to what NPR and the local Jazz station have to offer over radio, I realized that my entire Jazz library sucks pipe.

So where can I find the good recordings of the earliest stuff up to John Coltrane? I realize few, if any will be the original artists, but I'll take anything better than the tinny stuff I've got now.

Thelonious Monk. Amazing jazz pianist. In fact I am listening to Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane The Complete Riverside Recordings right this very moment. Very nicely remastered cd.

Man, you don't have to tell me who Thelonious Monk is. I'll check out the album.

I went to the half price book store today and they had Jazz at Massey Hall.
Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Mingus, Max Roach, and Bud Powell all in one place. I'm listening to it now and it's awesome.

e: Oski- will check it out.

Duke Ellington. Get the Newport '56 Live album for one of the best Jazz concerts ever.

I really don't enjoy 'Bitches Brew' that much.
If you want 70's Miles Davis, get 'A Tribute to Jack Johnson' or 'Get Up With It'.

The Miles Davis album to own (hell, the jazz album to own) is Kind of Blue. Any collection of jazz needs to start there.

Yesss, okay, as soon as I come into some funds, I am buying all of these. I especially need to listen to Duke Ellington more- I have not been giving one of America's greatest composers much attention.

Also, I went and listened to the Jim Cullum jazz band here in San Antonio. Hot damn.

My two favorite Duke Ellington recordings are 'Masterpieces by Ellington' and 'Money Jungle'.
'Money Jungle' especially because Mingus is on that one and its the most contemporary sounding of Ellington's stuff.

Sketches of Spain by Davis and A Love Supreme by Coltrane are two of the best albums ever recorded.

    You must listen to them.

Once that's done, look into Pharaoh Sanders, Gary Burton, and Freddie Hubbard.

On the Corner is probably my favorite album from that era.

Big Fun is really good too.

If you're willing to get a little crazy, Albert Ayler, Charles Gayle, etc are amazing.

    Although I don't think that's what you're looking for.

Seek out and find anything by Jimmy Smith
Root Down and Stay Loose are great but I reccomend anything else by him as well.
Been into a guy named Baby Face Willette big time recently.
Sonny Rollins and Way out West I think is the title of one of his awesome albums.
    Richard Groove Holmes
    Kenny Dorham
and the crazy way out Sun Ra are all excellent.

YES money jungle. Amazing album. Three amazing musicians all with a distinct style. You can hear the tensions in the album, especially in some of the give and take between mingus and ellington.

Mingus's complete atlanta recordings is good.
if you dont have kind of blue, buy it, buy it now.

Chic Corea, light as a feather is good, but hes defiantly heavy on the synth stuff, which may be a turnoff.

I've been listening to Phil Cohran's On the Beach alot lately. He played trumpet with Sun Ra, born in Oxford MS. Great album.

Check out some Art Ensemble of Chicago and Don Cherry as well.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is very close to being my favorite album of all time. So many good tracks on that album.. a local Calgary DJ spun it remixed with some other jazz-influenced hip hop and tribal beats one time and I mentally ejaculated in my pants.

Let's start off with the essentials:

    John Coltrane: Giant Steps
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue/Birth of the Cool
    Dave Brubeck Quartet: Time Out
    Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus

Those are some classic albums. If you want more current stuff try these:

Hiromi: Another Mind (She's a crazy piano player, you'll love her if you liked Monk)
Yoko Kanno: Cowboy Bebop OST (Some FANTASTIC acid jazz on this one, great anime too)
