Dead Space is a third-person shooter/survival horror game, released on October 14th on 360/PS3, and the 20th on PC. It is rated M for Mature.
When the USG
Ishimura (a Planet Cracker class mining ship) reports system failures throughout, and no more contact is established, the Concordance Extraction Corporation (CEC) sends the USG
Kellion, and three engineers to fix her problems, thinking some simple COM problems are to blame.
Kendra, Hammond and Isaac Clarke (the player; who's girlfriend is stationed on the
Ishimura) arrive with a bang, quickly discovering that whatever brought her down wasn’t exactly mechanical failure. And that it needs to be taken care of before they can ever get home.
But what does it look like? Spoiler’d for HUEG!
As I’ve said before, it’s as if
BioShock,
Resident Evil 4 and
Gears of War had a freaky three-way, and nobody really knows who the father is.
Dead Space: Downfall:
An animated prequel to the game,
Downfall tells the story of the
Ishimura before the Necromorph infestation. It is expected to release on DVD and BluRay on October 28th.
Bonus features include:
- Two exclusive codes for the game.
- Deleted scenes.
- Soundtrack.
- And a digital copy for BluRay owners
ONLY.
Random Stuff:
On both Xbox Live Marketplace and Playstation Network, there are downloadable RIGs (the in-game "armor"); one of which is exclusive to each console.
All six issues of the animated comic are up for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace, Playstation Network, and countless websites; all in HD, some uncensored.
The 360 gets the "Elite" and the PS3 gets the "Obsidian". Both are Level 5 uniforms with maximum inventory, 10% more protection, and 90s air supplies for zero-g. The 360 suit is
WHITE and
GREEN, the PS3 is
BLACK and
BLUE. PC version seems to get jack shit.
Also available for 200 MS Points (and whatever that equals in real money on PSN) is the Scorpion suit, which is the same as the other two exclusives, only
RED.
The game is identical on 360, PS3 and PC -- the choice comes down to which controller you prefer.
Aaaaand we're off!

Ripper or be ripped, that is the question.
i wanted a mercenaries mode like in RE4
True, I will never get tired of the simple joy of cleaving a necro's limb off with the plasma cutter. Similarly though, the line gun on legs or the baby's tentacles is a great thing.
HAH! KEEP CRAWLING MR. REEVE!
Yeah. Gamepad, gamepad, or gamepad?
Worst pc port ever.
Nothing's forgotten, nothing is ever forgotten
Resident Evil 4 disagrees.
You sir. Are terribly mistaken.
That said, what should I know about powering up my equipment? If I power up my RIG, is it maintained across armor upgrades? Should i bother upgrading the default gun?
Also, as I know its been discussed, there is a serious gap in difficulty between Medium and Hard. I've only played the first chapter in both difficulties. In Medium, I feel like a god. In Hard, I feel like a little girl. Does Medium difficulty ramp up, or am I wasting my time?

V-sync, no. Weird mouse issue, yes. Unable to change controls, yes. Can't for the life of me use console controller in the game, yes.
Screwed? Yes.
Okay, maybe not the worst. But it must be pretty high up on the list. Go check out the EA Technical Support forum threads.
I use the 360 controller on my pc to play games like Bully, Freespace 2 and the vehicles in the Battlefield games. Not for fps/third-person shooters. Analogue stick versus mouse? No contest. I also haven't used an analogue stick to play such games since the N64.
Nothing's forgotten, nothing is ever forgotten
All of your RIG upgrades carry over - the armor just makes it easier to keep your health bar full.
And yes, you SHOULD upgrade the Plasma Cutter. There are those amongst us who would spew bile and LIES about Rippers and Flamethrowers, but when it comes down to it, there's only one weapon suitable enough for the job:
The Plasma Cutter.
Seriously. I didn't think anything was wrong with the PC controls.
though, to be fair, I love my sensitivity very very low
On to the ending spoilers! Don't click unless you've beaten it, or you really want to know...
That being said, I'm fucking confused.
The way I understand it, the original Marker was found on Earth. Allston, or whatever his name was, found out about it and blamed the government for conspiring to keep the proof of alien life from the people (which was correct).
The government reverse-engineers the Marker, which apparently is NOT a success. The planet was an experiment, and it seems like the government fucked up, creating the hive-mind as a byproduct of their botched attempt at creating the Marker. This particular Marker controls that hive-mind, but I don't think that's what the original Marker did. Also, this is Marker 3A (or was it 3R? Couldnt' read it well on my SDTV), which means that the government has most likely made a few different versions.
Argh, we need more backstory! I need to download the digital comics to see if they shed any light.
My list of questions that remain:
1) What did the original Marker do?
2) Did the government creating Marker 3A (I'll go with that) also create the hive-mind?
3) Why did Kendra want the Marker?
I have a lot of thoughts on some other stuff, but I'll keep it to this for now:
When the Marker was returned to the pedestal, the necromorphs that died were just victims of the game engine. When I did it, there were no slicers coming up behind me. I know this because I was watching my back the entire time I slid it over. I made sure to kill anything that came after me before moving it. So my guess is that if there were any enemies on the screen, the game just killed them so they didn't interfere with the scripted sequence involving Kendra (Queen Douche). I also thought it strange that I seemed to be working for the Hive-Mind, but the necros were after me still. That leads me to think that the Hive-Mind and the Marker are separate "entities" that do NOT play well together. I think Nicole was a puppet of the Marker, somehow, but I'm still figuring that idea out.
Much like Alien, I'm gonna have to play through this a few more times before I can come up with a solid theory. And I love that about it
So, anyone have any translations they would like to post? I'm dying to read some of those longer messages on the walls, but my TV is horrible for text in 360 games.
Unbeliever!
Though he is right about the rig upgrades.
Truth be told, all the weapons except the flamethrower are worthy of getting upgrades (the ripper is just more worthy). Just don't try and upgrade everything....focus on just a couple of weapons and try and upgrade them as much as possible (especially with damage upgrades).
With all due respect to the obvious incorrectness if this man's beliefs...
You really can't afford to upgrade EVERYTHING in a single playthrough - focus on your favorite weapon and upgrade that. And keep a node on hand for those locked doors - you can usually find ammo for your preferred weapon and stuff to sell that'll easily get you enough money to buy another node at a store.
Glad I'm not the only one to realise that. Xenu be praised.
Its especially obvious once you find the report on how the unitologist have to pay to get to high levels of the religion.
I am a freaking nerd.

That's about the time the penny dropped for me.
So to speak.
nope. New Game+ only works on the same difficulty level you started on.
Damn, so just like RE4. Is the difficulty of the first chapter a good gauge for the difficulty of the rest of the game?
Maybe I should just stop being a fucking sissy and play Hard.

I've actually ditched the cutter for the time being in favor of the pulse rifle. Still, the Ripper is really, REALLY helpful on hard. Love the rifle's secondary function.
Ch. 2/3:
Hard IS Dead Space. Impossible is Deader Space.
Man up and take yer' lumps! It does get a little harder as the game goes on, but a properly upgraded rig and weapons help tremendously. Best experience by far if you can handle the challenge.
Ammo is for living things, especially on any difficulty higher than hard.
what you're trying to tell me, is that i cant use my upgrades/military suit etc on impossible?
im gonna have to start from scratch?
For a number of reasons. First off, this is a single player game and so putting restrictions on it such as those seem silly to me. Second, there is clearly a significant difference between difficulties, so if that can be minimized by taking along some upgraded equipment, so be it. Lastly, whats the fun in going through the exact same difficulty with the upgraded equipment. Why not use those new powerful tools towards the greater challenge?
RE4 handles it the same way and it turned out that instead of encouraging me to play through again, it turned me off. When I got the end of RE4 I thought to myself, "I can take all my goods for another run through the same setting, but have it be incredibly easy, or I can ditch all these cools things I've collected and play through an exercise in self-torture." After trying the higher difficulty, I decided to stop.

Because it's NOT a greater challenge when you're running with upgraded weaponry and rig. At least not that different from the next lowest difficulty level when first starting off.
