There's an indie game made a long time back that had no visuals at all, just a black screen. You only had audio to help you navigate a dungeon and not get killed horribly.

Not exactly what you're thinking, though it was a neat concept.

I don't get why people are such gobblecocks about Doom3's flashlight mechanic.

I mean, it was meant to force the player between a harrowing choice of shootey-things or the ability to see.

It made for some fun encounters and some pretty tense moments.

Now, I never played Doom 3, but I think that, through the power of logical thinking, I can figure out why people hated it.

It's total bullshit. It's a bullshit mechanic that makes no sense whatsoever and it's an easy way out to create those enocunters and moments you mentioned. It's a crutch so that they didn't have to think as hard to make the game seem creepy.

Seriously, it was a cheap way to do it.

Like, stupid cheap. Like at least have the guy lose a hand making it more plausible cheap.

To be fair, the manual does try and explain it with "he's really expensive". So, there's that.

"Really expensive" shouldn't really stop you when the future of the human race is at stake.
