Ignorance and pseudo-science rear their ugly heads again

A new book defending vaccines, written by a doctor infuriated at the claim that they cause autism, is galvanizing a backlash against the anti-vaccine movement in the United States. But there will be no book tour for the doctor, Paul A. Offit, author of "Autism's False Prophets." He has had too many death threats.
"I'll speak at a conference, say, to nurses," he said.
"But I wouldn't go into a bookstore and sign books. It can get nasty. There are parents who really believe that vaccines hurt their children, and to them, I'm incredibly evil. They hate me."

Fanatical idiots rant against a doctor that's actually a co-inventor of a vaccine for rotavirus and denounce him as an evil babykiller.

Yay!

I think I heard this guy on NPR. It was a pretty good show.

The "anti-vaccine" movement has a bunch of celebrities behind it so it gets a lot of publicity and gets people worked up. I think one of the most vocal ones is... I want to say Jenny McCarthy.

But of course, people getting up in arms over a stupid idea usually gets more press than people being rational.

edit: I was late. Yeah, so it is Jenny McCarthy. As if she wasn't annoying enough already.

Jenny McCarthy claims her child had autism as a result of vaccinations and that her child is no longer autistic

It's such concentrated liquid stupid I want to slather her with a flamethrower

My best friend's an autistic dude and man these folk have it hard enough as it is without god damn misinformation and lies being brought up about their condition.

    technically, though

    technically

Can't a vaccination, being made of (presumably) weakened cells of whatever you're trying to vaccinate, backfire and give you whatever you were vaccinating against in the first place?

before exploring how vaccination actually works lets start with the fact that autism is not a virus

That's exactly what it does. It gives you an incredibly weak version of whatever and then you create antibodies and you are far less likely to get that disease or whatever ever again.

but she says it gives you autism or something.
