Black Lagoon seems like something a 14 year old would love, even more than Trigun. Guns are cool. Skanks are cool, especially in tank tops and short shorts. This guy looks just like Mark/whatever from A Better Tomorrow, etc etc.

I wish it had existed when I was 13 or so. I completely missed out on DBZ, Outlaw Star, Trigun, etc because I spent like three or four years without any extra channels and no internet and lived in the middle of nowhere.

While I can appreciate and enjoy Cowboy Bebop (most of the time) and Samurai Champloo and whatnot, I have a hard time with things like DBZ and Trigun. I think I am too old or something.

man i had to download all that shit on dialup and it was painful but created an atmosphere of sharing because you couldnt expect anyone to painlessly get something themselves if you can provide it

everyone passing around like 20 cds of trigun and whatever
    that show was alright too

these days you just tell people whats good and they get it themselves or you bring over a hard drive and get like 100gigs off them
and you end up getting too much too quick and it all overflows and you dont end up watching most of it and its basically the same as dialup but without the sharing and more time spent finding more things to download just because you can

    oh the woes of technology

im mainly talkin movies and tv here
aint seen much anime in a long time

I fell off the anime wagon as soon as I graduated college somewhat due to lack of decent internet. Nowadays I just read the weekly releases and that's about it. Can't be arsed to sit through 25 minutes of something I've already read.

That doesn't really make sense as an argument.

The comics are usually better than the cartoons.

I think reading manga would make me feel even more ashamed than watching anime

That stuff doesn't appear on American shelves, though.

    Well, usually.

I found a ghost in the shell comic, with digital tentacle rape, at Borders a while back.

It was next to the other American comics, right up front where any kid could pick it up.

im not just talkin about anime though

and shit i dont think i was ever that much into anime and stuff
like i was interested but i only really watched a few things
i have dvd sets ive only got about 3 episodes into before putting them away

all that said, the gto manga is the one thing that i stuck with long after stopping everything else
    i loved that shit
i would like to see some cheap set of the whole thing on amazon or somewhere so i might buy it easily and at a lower price
because i basically read the whole thing instore plus a bit online and the only ones i bought were the first 3 from japan for like $4 bucks each but they didnt have anything past that

oh and theyre releasing the prequel one slowly so maybe i should get on that

I was never into a lot of anything at once.

I would just jump from one series, and then eventually that would get boring and something else would drift along and I'd be into that for a while.

I'm the same with videogames, come to think of it.

A comic filled with girly-men and pretty boys is a less satisfying purchase than a comic filled with guns and explosions.

The biggest difference with American and Japanese comics is that we are just barely seeing anything mainstream that's aimed at girls. Japan has tons of that shit. It doesn't mean they don't have plenty of awesome comics loaded with guns and explosions.

A lot of manga is really gear towards young adult males. Like ages 10-16 or so. Most comics are geared for older people these days. The median age of the group that reads more than one DC book a month is probably like 36. Marvel's median age is probably a bit younger, but not by much. The every day person probably doesn't know this though, so never mind.

Speaking of Berserk, I just watched it and thought that it would be nice if Diablo 3 ended up being like it in that the world in the beginning is perfectly normal, because you know, Prime Evils gone and all that, and then suddenly everything turns into this blasted hellscape with the hordes of Chaos all up in your shit. It would make for a nice "wtf" experience, I think.

Actually, yes, you've got me on that one. There is one girly-looking dude who shows up around book 4 or 5.

Also, Alucard is kind of gender-neutral looking on some of the covers.

At least as far as mainstream is concerned, there is no popular comic I know of that's even known in the States that doesn't have some degree of pretty boy nonsense going on.

Believe me, I would if I could, if only our backwater third world country could get the rest of the volumes. As it is now, only volumes 1-9 is in circulation here. I have heard all sorts of crazy praise for it though, so as soon as I get the opportunity, I'll grab it and have a look-see.

Two mangas that I liked at first were Gantz and Vinland Saga, but holy shit did they ever both fall off the map. I only read Gantz for the little kid and Vinland Saga because...well, Vikings. Gantz spending over one fucking year dealing with one battle was the height of too-muchery. Vinland Saga went from Vikings to Vikings over nine-thoouuusssaaannnddd, which was not what I signed up for.

then one day i watched a bit more and suddenly found myself watching the rest of the 12/13 episode series in one evening

maybe had something to do with a test the next day i was supposed to be studying for but it turns out it was a pretty good show

I think reading manga would make me feel even more ashamed than watching anime

I mean, I don't see how people, sometimes grown men, can take a manga volume off a shelf at Barnes and Noble and walk up to the register without any misgivings

Isn't it just kinda the equivalent of grabbing a comic book?

Granted there isn't full on sex scenes in most comics but still

    Technically yes

But in my gut, it is far more shameful to be seen purchasing Fruits Basket than the Punisher or whatever

    Well, that's just natural, dude.

A comic filled with girly-men and pretty boys is a less satisfying purchase than a comic filled with guns and explosions.

Ah, but herein lies the rub

Name one manga without girly-looking men and pretty boys

Actually, yes, you've got me on that one. There is one girly-looking dude who shows up around book 4 or 5.

Also, Alucard is kind of gender-neutral looking on some of the covers.

At least as far as mainstream is concerned, there is no popular comic I know of that's even known in the States that doesn't have some degree of pretty boy nonsense going on.

    Hellboy is pretty popular.

Man, that is one depressing show. I always mean to rewatch it, and then I just think that I'd rather not end up cutting myself for a few hours.

Gankutsuou was good, though. I really need to do a single-sitting of that show.

I will admit to you all that I actually enjoyed the first two seasons or so of Naruto, Bleach, and even some Inuyasha, way back when. The continuing quackery of each of those series after that spoiled the memories for me.
