Everybody knows that Stingrays can be dangerous.

What's extraordinary about his death is that he's faced more dangerous animals and the animal that killed him stabbed him in the heart.

    In the heart.

steve irwin, a phenomenally well-trained individual, is one of 3 people who have ever been killed by a stingray in australia, so yeah i'd say it was surprising

He had a lot more exposure to them than most people, I'm guessing.

I would have thought he would be less likely to have been killed than the average diver.

Despite his bravura and character he was a highly trained professional who handled dangerous wild animals for a living. The circumstances around his death were, to me at least, even more surprising than if Joe Bloggs got chomped on by a shark while surfing.

You know the weeks following his death and the reports of the widespread revenge killings on stingrays around Australia. I thought that was kinda cool. Cause, you know, we had them totally outgunned, slippery bastards.

stingrays really just aren't known for attacking. they're considered safe. anyone who has gone diving and seen a stingray has pretty much had the same exposure to them as irwin.

    rip :(
when I heard how he died, I refused to believe it was true because it's so fucking unlikely
I was utterly certain it was some kind of joke

Unlikely that he was killed by a wild animal? Or that it was one that he wasn't looking out for?
really? you're going to be that dumb?
he gets stung in the heart by a stingray, an otherwise docile and relatively harmless creature that millions of divers safely encounter every year (I myself have pet stingrays on several occasions) and you're just going to call it "killed by a wild animal"?

son, you are so goddamn dumb it's like you got shit from an asshole made of stupid

Wouldn't you call getting stung to death by a sting ray 'getting killed by a wild animal'? It was an animal, it was wild. I'm guessing it's about as likely as you getting killed by say, a bear. Or a crocodile. Which is to say it's incredibly unlikely, unless you spent most of your time grabbing, holding and swimming with those creatures.

Somehow, "MAN WHO MAKES LIVING GRABBING DANGEROUS ANIMALS KILLED BY DANGEROUS ANIMAL" didn't have me saying 'shit, didn't see that one coming'.

    Alternatively:

    20021209h.gif
yeah, you're fucking stupid right now because you're overlooking the part where I specifically explained that stingrays aren't that dangerous

this is like saying, "man mauled to death by kitten" is the same as "man killed by wild animal"

can be? sure, as Steve proved
but again, just as walking across the street can theoretically get you killed it's not something we would normally classify as dangerous

Yeah, if he was stung anywhere else, chances are he would have been fine. The whole thing was just unbelievably bad luck.

My point is simply that stingrays have a venomous barb several inches long. Docile as they may usually be anybody thw fact that they have a huge venomous barb makes them something you shouldn't ever take too lightly.

I mean, stingrays are animals. They're alive and as such are always going to be more unpredictable than anyone suspects. A more apt analogy would be crossing a street that has a living car in it that could suddenly decide it feels threatened by you and proceed to run you down with its poisonous wheels.

Yeah, they're generally docile, but they're still unpredictable and also endowed with a giant venomous barb that can kill you.

you're grossly overestimating how dangerous the barb is
aside from the fact that they rarely actually use it even in defense, the venom usually just results in a painful wound
death rarely results from a sting

but I shouldn't pick on Rolo, it seems a lot of you are really goddamn ignorant when it comes to stingrays
they really are not that dangerous and people handle them all the fucking time
