Sometime after six. Neogaf will implode, and we will probably have to get them from a different source like gameindustry.biz, next-gen.biz, mcvuk, or gamasutra.

    Ah yeah, forgot about them.

How'd those sell? I heard Blitz was fairly good I think. Not a sports-game fan though, personally.

Blitz League II came out last year, iirc.

When did the last Hitz game even come out?

“Midway enters this process with strong underlying fundamentals, as evidenced by solid fourth quarter sales that exceeded expectations in spite of a challenging retail and general economic environment,” Booty added.

“Overall, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe sales are approaching two million units shipped, TNA iMPACT! has shipped approximately one million units, and our Game Party franchise has sold close to three million units in total.”
Midway expects that Chapter 11 protection will enable the company to conduct its business operations as usual.

I don't think I'm as harsh on Midway, but for the life of me, I can't figure out why Blitz would be considered Midway's saving grace.

IIRC 2005 was NHL Hitz Pro.

They revamped the game to play 5 on 5 instead of 3 on 3 and managed to ditch a lot of the features in the process.

That was also the year of NFL Blitz Pro (before EA bought exclusivity to the NFL) which also had gutted features and player models that took up 3/4's of the field and could jump 20 ft in the air making every pass an interception.

Neither game sold all that well.

Really? They've done several versions these past 10? years. I like football and Blitz was a great alternative to Madden. It was much more arcadey. It felt a bit like Mutant League Football.

It was good multiplayer, and the ability to hit your friends players whenever you wanted for whatever reason and not having to worry about a flag was awesome. Blitz: The League was what kept my XBox around for well after it would have been relegated to the closet.

It will be sad to see Midway go. I wouldn't be surprised however to see them sell of lose everything, but Mortal Kombat around. I think that franchise is still making money. Have there been any good games for it these past few years?

No, they weren't a threat, but they were fun and could have done well.

So, Midway filed for Chapter 11 this morning. The question still remains of what studios they end up getting rid of. I'm sure that Midway itself isn't going anywhere and the MK team in Chicago is probably not moving.

Speaking of Squeenix, Dragon Quest IX has been delayed from March to June in Japan. Why should we care? Well, it's slipped out of fiscal 2008.
For Square Enix, the damage is a bit more measurable. The company's Square Enix Holdings parent issued revised earnings forecasts for the year 2008 today. Citing a delay in the release of a major March game, the company lowered sales forecasts from 160 billion yen to 133 billion and operating profit forecasts from 21 billion to 12 billion yen.

    http://ds.ign.com/articles/953/953733p1.html

Yow. On the plus side, fiscal 2009 should look pretty awesome.

    http://blog.wired.com/games/2009/02/sega-layoffs.html
The house that Sonic built is getting significantly smaller.

Sega's Japanese main branch said Tuesday that it will close 110 arcades, cancel some games in development and seek to lay off 18 percent of its staff. In a series of press releases, the game publisher said that these cost-cutting moves come in anticipation of its recording an annual loss of 25 billion yen (about $238 million) during the fiscal year that will end March 31.

Arcades: Sega owns and operates 450 videogame arcades in Japan, and said it would close 110 of them that show "poor future potential and profitability." This move "may" make the company's arcades profitable even if the that segment of the business gets tighter in the coming fiscal year, Sega said.

Software development: Sega says it will chop 20 percent off its research-and-development budget for arcade and consumer games. The company plans to do this by "consolidating titles to be developed" and "enhancing the self-manufacture ratio."

Running this through my Japanese-to-English translator, these phrases mean that Sega will cancel some games in development and develop more games internally, rather than outsourcing them to outside developers. (I've asked Sega for clarification.) That's a lot of games.
So arcades are finally dying in Japan.

Bandai Namco is going to buy D3.
D3's ability to release dozens and dozens of mostly crappy budget PS2 games (and some great ones) has always had my respect, and I hope that they are able to draw upon the dev and marketing prowess of Bandai Namco to reinvigorate their budget game lines.

    Yay! New thread!

As for the Sega arcades closing, I just hope it's a consolidation of things, and not a sign of the whole arcade scene dying. When I was in Tokyo, we visited quite a few Sega arcades and it was a lot of fun ... and still pretty popular!

Wish the Arcades here didn't suck so much. If they didn't I'd be there all the time.

They're also stupidly expensive (unless you know of some deals the rest of us can take advantage of.)

Half-price Wednesdays, my friend. Then things are downright reasonable as far as games go.

I dunno, their food's a little pricey, but most of it's actually good stuff.

Then again silly me is on a quest to win enough tickets to get a PS3. All I need are 98,000 tickets, how hard could it be? :P

Edit: What a horrible top of page. Curses.

The D&B's near me (not sure where it is, but it's about 30 minutes away) has a pretty shitty selection of arcade games. After about an hour or so I'm pretty much done there. Now, this is INFINITELY better than the DisneyQuest or whatever in Tampa, FL. You pay one set fee to get in and all the games are free... But all the good ones are broken. The only good thing about that place was their chili cheese dogs.

I used to hit up the D&B in Denver a lot to play the BattleTech Sim. When they pulled the pods out I pretty much stopped going.

    http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/02/11/activision-blizzard-twice-as-many-music-games-in-2009-james-bond-delayed-until-2010-new-blizzard-game-this-year/
Activision Blizzard publishing CEO Mike Griffith promised more than twice as many Activision-branded music games in 2009 in today’s earnings call, while also revealing their next “James Bond” title has been moved into next year, and Blizzard declared an intention to release a game this year.

    ***

There will be much plenty more more “Guitar Hero” in 2009.

Activision Blizzard are preparing many music game initiatives this year, which will allow the company to deliver more than twice as many music games in 2009 than they did in 2008, according to Activision Blizzard publishing CEO Mike Griffith on today’s lengthy earnings call.

To reach that number, Activision Blizzard’s releasing “Guitar Hero: Metallica,” a new “Guitar Hero” on the DS and a “Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits” across multiple platforms. Additionally, Griffith said “Guitar Hero” will see a “restage” near end of the year (think “Guitar Hero: World Tour 2″) and the introduction if their new music franchise, “DJ Hero,” set to arrive before the end of 2009.

Griffith said their next “James Bond” title has been moved out of 2009 and into early 2010, due to the impending release of “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2″ later this year. The company believes sales of “Quantum of Solace” were impacted by releasing “Call of Duty: World at War” around the same time in 2008 and hopes to avoid the same issue with their next “James Bond” product.

An analyst also pressed Blizzard COO Paul Sams if the company would generate non-“World of Warcraft” related revenue in 2009. Sams said Blizzard intends to release one “frontline” title per year, but would not disclose if that would be “StarCraft II,” “Diablo III” or a new “WoW” expansion for 2009.
So we should expect StarCraft II to be released this year and sell a ton. I never would have guessed that a crappy tie-in would sell worse when put next to a good game.

Unless Activision is stupid enough to put the hammer down at Blizzard (and I'm guessing there were enough provisions put in the buyout contract to keep that from happening), they won't.

"Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits?" Are they really that goddamn desperate to rape the franchise?

Just remember, their goal is to triple the number of Guitar Hero games.

We're already starting to see greatest hit shit when they merely doubled the number of Guitar Hero games. What can they possibly do to milk it more? Guitar Hero: Tony Hawk?

    Boo-urns.

Anyway. NPD day, and I don't expect much out of the ordinary. I think the biggest news will be the establishing of a hard trend for the PS3 via YoY sales decline.

Japanese giant boasts it has successfully bought majority share of Ben 10 publisher

Namco Bandai is attempting a buyout of D3, the parent company of publisher D3P.

According to andriasang, the company aims to turn D3 into a full subsidiary, and the firm claims that it has already reached an agreement to acquire 70 per cent of D3 shares

Namco Bandai hopes to secure 100 per cent of the shares with the standard share price value at 62,000 YEN.

The Pacman publisher has stated that to come together as one group will allow them to strengthen global developments and expand business. Specifically, Namco hopes to make use of D3’s Ben 10 and casual games series, as well as cooperate on the development of mobile content.
