Cheers dude, does it make you feel any better that it was the first time I tried it....

Your Pic was on CNN tho, a little bit more famous than a local newspaper.

I have many more from the night that I need to work on a bit as they were a bit bright, photoshop will be busy when I get home tonight.

Biggest downside of moving to Vancouver from Ontario is that there is practically no thunderstorms here ever. Lightning photography is so fun, too :(

Oh man, I completely forgot about this! I believe I witnessed one thunderstorm the two years I lived in Nanaimo. Took a bit to get used to them when we moved back to Ontario.

Honestly looking at Nick Brandt's photography I think his awesomeness and unique style come from post processing and less from the 'get closer' philosophy.

Kworn I hate you so much. I've been trying to get a decent lightning photo for about 7-8 years now. I haven't been actively seeking out storms but when they happen around me I try and capture it if there is no rain. Also, congrats on the local news picture.

I think you're right (although he claims, whenever he pipes up, that he does minimal post processing) - I think getting closer with wildlife is sort of a different topic than getting closer with people. At least, from the angle from which I have been thinking about it (specifically due to the Online Photographer blogpost). I see a psychological dynamic discussed by choosing to be "of" the people you are shooting (or among them) versus being apart and spying on them. I doubt animals share this theorized psychological hangup.

    Also, Kworn - congrats!!

We get a lot of lightning storms in this part of coloraod between may and end of june but its almost always raining. I haven't worked up the motivation to try and go to the top of a parking garage or drive up the foothills/mountains to get a good vantage point and protect the camera from rain.

    This page needs a photo.

    Ramadi_mission_small-2.jpg

Unfortunately, my ISO was at 400 when I took this because the mission we were on was at dusk when we started. Had it been at 200, the noise wouldn't be as bad. I was able to reduce it a lot in Light Room though.

HAHAHA - I just posted in your art thread!

Man, this shot and the one before it in your art thread are effing incredible. Honestly when the subject is a helicopter kicking up dust in a war zone, a little noise and grain on the shot are perfectly acceptable. It's not like anyone in their right minds imagines war as smooth and glossy.

Seriously, this is so great. The depth to which I can see into the dust cloud in one part and see the tall grass give the image nice depth (something mine consistently lack - my shots are always very 2D), and the colors and the shaping of the dust cloud really set the mood. Fantastic.

You know what's really painful though? Shooting helicopters landing from 30 feet away. The amount of wind and debris kicked up hurts quite a bit. Honestly the camera was protecting my face so I didn't want to put it down. :P

Max, next time you're shooting prop vehicles just keep in mind that you should try and shoot in shutter priority with a close to as low as possible shutter speed so you can get the props to blur a bit. Even a little bit of blur is enough. Frozen prop blades look weird. Sweet shot, though!

I felt the same way, but unfortunately I didn't really have a lot of time to think about it. I often turn my shutter up higher than it should be in the fear that I'll over expose the image. I usually find I'd much rather have an awesome under-exposed shot that I can fix than a blown out shot I have to throw away.

Do you shoot on manual mostly? You could just set it to shutter priority and stop down one or two stops just to be safe.

I do as a matter of fact. I don't typically shoot on shutter priority, usually either aperture or manual. I'll definitely keep that in mind next time I see a bird though.

So my family had to put our best friend and my favourite subject, our dog Duka, down two weeks ago. He gave us a good almost-13 years and starred in his fair share of photos. Below is a shot of him a day before he got the needle. He looks tired.

Sorry this took so long, I removed noise and sharpened the image but then noticed the colour in the water wasn't as nice in the sharpened version so reverted to the original and just removed noise.

I've taken too many pictures of frogs, but this guy had the strangest color green on his face:
    sm_frog10.jpg
    18-55mm@55mm, ISO 400, 1/320s, F/5.6

I finally got a second lens, a cheapo Nikkor 55-200mm VR. I like it alright even though it feels cheap and plasticky and the autofocus likes to freak out every once in a while.
    moon_bird.jpg
    55-200mm@200mm, ISO 400, 1/100s F/5.6

    roof_bird.jpg
    55-200mm@200mm, ISO 100, 1/125s, F/5.6

I tried setting up the auto ISO on my D60 and I ended up with a bunch of blown out highlights and everything shooting with ISO 800 (which is what I set the maximum to) except in mid-day sun. I also seem to be getting a fair bit of vignetting on the 55-200mm. Is this common, or am I borking something up? I'm not using any filters and I'm using the hood it came with. It seems like every shot I take in shutter priority mode has the aperture wide open, maybe I need to slow it down or up my ISO? (All three of the above are at f/5.6)

    Hi Sheri! Where ya been?

@ Muncie - A friend of mine is having the opposite problem when shooting shutter priority - erverything is under exposed (he also shoots Nikon). I myself never shoot shutter priority. I might choose to if I were shooting a soccer game or a running animal, and then I might aim for 1/250-1/500 for stopping action. But normally I shoot aperture priority, as that gives me one major control over my images - Depth of Field. I usually set my ISO to 100 or 200 because my camera gets grainy pretty easily, and then any aperture I set my camera can handle a good exposure from (f/4 and my shutter is fast, but ususally nowere near its limit, so exposre is good; f/2.8 same story; f/16 and the only concern is is the shutter too slow to hand-hold?)

I find that this mode almost always puts my settings in places I am happy to have them.

erisian pope: I'm going to try shooting in aperture priority for a little while to see if that does the trick. What I was saying is that my auto ISO keeps blowing out my highlights, but yeah, with Shutter Priority I do seem to have to work at not underexposing everything. When I get off work I just like to walk around with my camera, part of the daily zen thing, and a tripod would just distort my chi flow.

    olimario: Thanks! I was really happy with that one. Here's a larger version (1680px × 1125px, 700kb).

I really like the last one but the legs being cut off at the bottom of the chairs sort of bothers me but then at the same time I don't know if that would fuck up the composition if they were included.

The first one gives me a spooky "no shit I wouldn't park my car there, zombies would probably eat my brains" vibe to it. The F being cut off kind of bugs me a bit.

and I've got to throw in the typical male comment: boring Tampa area? Couldn't you just go out taking pictures of bikini clad women?

and finally: some of you people better be going to be PAX, I want to see some crazy photos up in here!

Hey Altman, I used to complain about the crappiness of the Philadelphia area, but it only means you have to hit the pavement more to find the shots that grab your attention.

I have been very interested in shooting skyscrapers at night, but haven't found a way to make the shots interesting. I kinda like how this one came out though.
