Half-Life 2 DEATHMATCH we have a server - come saplyu with us
You know what a fun game is? Half-Life 2 Deathmatch is a fun game! Let's play it together!
To quote the extensive wikipedia article about the game. "A few weeks later, Valve released Half-Life 2: Deathmatch on Steam. The goal of the game is to kill as many other players as possible, using a variety of means, in either free-for-all or team-based matches. A subsequent update to the game added an additional map and three new weapons."
Doesn't that sound like the most fun?
If you don't have any idea what this is it is standard deathmatch stuff but with physics!
PHYSICS!
The best part is that if you have an ATI card or an NVIDIA card you can get it for free!
(you still need to get steam)
There are tons of empty deathmatch and team deathmatch servers floating around in the server browser so we can hop on any of them for some toilet-shooting.
Man this is so much fun. I hate a lot of the player made maps though, they're just shitty boxes with nothing in them except weapons or crappy remakes of HL1 or Counterstrike maps. My favorites are the official Valve maps and some of the more detailed player made ones.
Also, I love using the gravity gun. Some people said it was just a gimmick but fuck them, it was a really great way to kill people when you started without other weapons (the crowbar is nice but it's close range). That and there's nothing better than picking up a table and blocking a bunch of bullets with it, then throwing it down the hallway and taking everyone out. I'll reinstall this right now and I might be down for some action later tonight when I get off work.

Wait a minute, HL2 has multiplayer?
Is this a game, or some kind of infinite bounty of joy from the gods?

Basically just deathmatch and team deathmatch with HL2 weapons. It rocks, though.
Also, if by some chance someone doesn't own this, then it's only 5 bucks on steam. And it's def. worth that price to shoot a few toilets/explosive barrels/tables/etc. at people.

Yes but I just got this thing and the single player experience has been blowing my mind. I was not even aware that there was some kind of multiplayer element to this game, so that is just lots and lots of icing on a delicious cake (that is not a lie).
I used to play it all the time.
Before TF2 got released.. Now all my buddies have floated away into the nether.

If people are serious about this, and someone finds a server and gives us a time, then I'm seriously down. I'm on spring break, and this would be a fun way to kick it off.

Or they could read the OP and see how to get it for free.

For free? I'm assuming you mean the ATI and NVIDIA deal, and while I realize that the majority of gamers use an ATI or NVIDIA graphics card, some do not. And those people do not get it for free, incase you didn't know. I think it's still useful to know that it's only 5 bucks on steam for the other crowd.
I propose for consideration of the thread that dm_runoff is the best map in this ever.
A bunker with two entrances surrounded by a wet marshey thing. Inside the bunker is a bunch of furniture and weapons ideal for traps and a computer terminal. After the terminal is activated an alarm starts blaring and after ~30 seconds the two entrances slowly start to close. At this point it is a furious struggle to take and hold the bunker before you are locked out and bombarded by headcrab canisters that kill everybody outside.
so wild

Sounds awesome. Never played it, though. Like someone was talking about earlier, I played mostly the unoriginal big open maps with a few platforms here and there.

I just played this shit yesterday at a LAN party. It's our go-to game for quick, dumbass fun. "Hey, what should we play guys... Left4Dead... TF2... BITCH HL2 DM!"
We also seem to play that dumb killbox map which is literally just a huge box with a bunch of random shit in it. It's cheap, crude, and somehow extremely fun. Until the guy hosting started spawning a bunch of hovercrafts, anyway.
I have to reinstall this.... I havent had steam up and running in awhile.
I played the death match game for 3 years straight. I got rather good at it too.
I played mostly on the [PIG] server. It had a rotation of custom maps that were amazingly well designed. Too much fun really.
Have not played this in a while, thanks to awful servers. I'll play on a server with a standard map rotation (and not just lockdown/overwatch). Though it is quite fun to get to the top on overwatch, rocket everyone over and over, then hear glorious whining about how only noobs and lamers go up there. Then of course they camp up there as soon as they get a chance, but you kill them with a cooked grenade. mmmmm

The grenade toss gravity gun trick was one of my favorites. Most people on the server I played on knew it very well... but when ever i ventured to servers with newish folks it was like shooting fish and a barrel as most people seemed to spend more time watching me than avoiding.
This is the only multiplayer fps that I was ever really good at. I'm sure I've lost my touch, but I used to be able to nail people with the crossbow from across a level no problem. Also I was nasty with the gravity gun.
edit: And yeah, I'll play with you guys. Seems like a good opportunity to procrastinate on this paper.

Technically, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch is treated as a seperate game.

Will play again.

I just noticed HL: DM Source on my games list. Did people actually play that?

Im totally into this.
ps: I joined this game with about 8 minutes to go, which means statistically a kill every 9.something seconds =D
edit: And of course, the gravity gun
They're already in the first post.
I think you're the only person that read the OP
e: the best part about overwatch is clogging the stairs to the top floor with cars and tables and stuff and THEN camping it
Im remembering so much about this game now.
I liked the offical maps that were mirrored.
Overwatch became hctawrevO and so on. Good times.
